Google CEO Sundar Pichai speaks in conversation with Emily Chang during the APEC CEO Summit at Moscone West on November 16, 2023 in San Francisco, California. There were other reasons for skepticism ahead of Alphabet's earnings report. Like Meta, Alphabet is pouring money into AI. Last month, Alphabet announced a suite of products, including Vertex AI, a no-code console for enterprise companies to build their own AI agents. With first-quarter results in the rearview mirror, Alphabet now has to keep up with heightened expectations, which will only increase as competitors roll out more generative AI products.

Amazon is opening cloud regions in Southeast Asia because customers want their data stored securely in their own countries, Amazon Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels said in an exclusive interview. They really wanted something local such that they can meet, for example, local data storage requirements, or protection of personal identifiable information," Vogels told CNBC's JP Ong. An AWS region is a physical location where data centers are clustered. Within each AWS region are a minimum of three separate availability zones. "And for them, it's important to have these kinds of technologies on the ground, in [the] country to make sure that they can serve their customers best or their citizens best," said Vogels.

It's not just Stubblebine who plans to continue cutting cloud costs. The cloud industry refers to cost-cutting as "cloud optimization." Last year, cloud providers like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft cited cloud optimization as the reason cloud sales growth had slipped to historic lows. As growth has crept back up in recent months, these same companies have declared the days of cloud optimization to be over. But Stubblebine thinks that cloud optimization is part of a broader mentality shift sweeping the pre-IPO startup world.

A record surge of data center construction is underway to provide the computing and storage that underpins society's fast-expanding digital footprint and powers artificial intelligence. An AWS spokesperson said in an emailed statement that the company has introduced more cost-effective options for moving data. As of March, AWS had removed Snowmobile from its website, and the Amazon unit has stopped offering the service, CNBC has confirmed. Andy Jassy, now Amazon's CEO, called it the Snowmobile, and said the company would be using the truck to help customers speedily transfer data to Amazon Web Services facilities. "We intend to make sure that Snowmobile is both faster and less expensive than using a network-based data transfer model," Barr wrote. Clients generally find that sending data to AWS online is more economical than using Snowmobile, the company said.

Eaton and DuPont are both unconventional AI plays, as the data center market grows to meet the demands of the generative AI boom. Wells Fargo Investment Institute last month described rising data center demand as having positive "trickle-down effects" on the industrial sector. WFII wrote that spending from Big Tech firms into data centers, in particular, creates "meaningful downstream impacts" for industrial companies. Amazon Web Services is reportedly investing nearly $150 billion in data centers within the next 15 years to support AI efforts. During a Barclays investor conference in February, CFO Lori Koch said DuPont's data center and AI exposure will help boost the company's electronics business.

Google is trying to make cloud computing more affordable with a custom-built Arm -based server chip. With the new Arm-based chip, Google is playing catch-up with rivals such as Amazon and Microsoft, which have been employing a similar strategy for years. Google has used Arm-based server computers for internal purposes to run YouTube advertising, the BigTable and Spanner databases and the BigQuery data analytics tool. Arm chips, which are popular in smartphones, offer a shorter set of instructions than x86 chips, which are commonly found in PCs. Axion offers 30% better performance than the fastest general-purpose Arm-based virtual machines in the cloud and 50% better performance than than comparable VMs based on x86, Google said.

While Microsoft Azure's reported 30% year-over-year revenue growth and Alphabet's Google Cloud posted 26% annual revenue growth during the same period, Amazon's results nevertheless indicated the softness in cloud spending is rolling over. Amazon said it expects accelerating AWS revenue trends to continue in 2024, which is good news for the stock. In a poll of more than 1,000 U.S. consumers about their expected spending, Amazon remains the preferred e-commerce destination "by a wide margin."
