The study found that 45% of Gen Zers are worried they should know more about AI than they do. However, Gen Zers were also the most likely generation to have given some AI tools a go. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., hosted the panel of tech executives, labor and civil rights leaders as part of the Senate's inaugural "AI Insight Forum." Google CEO Sundar Pichai, arrives for a US Senate bipartisan Artificial Intelligence (AI) Insight Forum at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on September 13, 2023. Working toward legislationSchumer said in his prepared remarks that the event marked the beginning of "an enormous and complex and vital undertaking: building a foundation for bipartisan AI policy that Congress can pass." Successful legislation will need to be bipartisan, Schumer added, saying he'd spoken with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who was "encouraging." Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., who leads the Commerce Committee, predicted lawmakers could get AI legislation "done in the next year."

But he’s hoping that they will give senators some realistic direction as he tries to do what Congress hasn't done for many years — pass meaningful regulation of the tech industry. “It’s going to be a fascinating group because they have different points of view,” Schumer said in an interview with The Associated Press ahead of the forum. Many members of Congress agree that legislation will probably be needed in response to the quick escalation of artificial intelligence tools in government, business and daily life. In the United States, most major tech companies have expressed support for AI regulations, though they don’t necessarily agree on what that means. Blumenthal’s framework calls for a new “licensing regime” that would require tech companies to seek licenses for high-risk AI systems.

The agency's panel of outside exerts recommended the updated COVID-19 shots by a vote of 13-1. WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. approved updated COVID-19 vaccines Monday, hoping to rev up protection against the latest coronavirus strains and blunt any surge this fall and winter. It’s part of a shift to treat fall updates of the COVID-19 vaccine much like getting a yearly flu shot. A CDC advisory panel is set to issue recommendations Tuesday on who most needs the updated shots. The FDA pointedly isn’t calling this latest round a “booster” but instead a vaccine updated to better match the currently circulating virus. But while the FDA's decision allows for wide use of the updated shots, the CDC will decide how strongly different groups are urged to get them.

To the Editor:Re “It’s Not ‘Sex Work.’ It’s Prostitution,” by Pamela Paul (column, Aug. 18), about how the term “sex work” legitimizes the exploitative sex trade:Ms. Paul’s article is courageous, as evenhanded and thoughtful as it is provocative. As a former Title VI-funded doctoral fellow whose thesis explored the effects of the professionalization of traditional female occupations, I was steeped in radical feminist theory, and I know the theoretical basis for the notion that sex “work” involves choice and agency. Ron DeSantis’s remark that slaves gained useful skills while being treated like chattel property. Joel M. YoungPlacitas, N.M.To the Editor:Pamela Paul’s opposition to the term “sex work” is akin to opposing the term “domestic workers” for maids because exploitation and trafficking are common in domestic service. Rather than denying workers their rightful status in industries rife with abuse, we should fight for enhanced labor protections.

CNBC's Jim Cramer said it's never too early to start thinking about investing. Young people, even those just out of college, should be thinking about their monetary future, according to Cramer. "For young people just out of college, investing is a great way to trick yourself into saving money you might otherwise spend," Cramer said. "Beyond that, remember: when you're young, you can afford to take a lot more risks with your portfolio. And it's never too soon to start contributing to your 401(k) or IRA, especially an IRA that's a Roth."

The police in a suburb of Columbus, Ohio, released body-camera footage on Friday of an officer fatally shooting a pregnant Black woman through the windshield of her car in the parking lot of a supermarket last week. The shooting of the woman, Ta’Kiya Young, 21, led to protests and an investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation into the use of deadly force by the police in Blendon Township, a town of approximately 10,000 northeast of Columbus. The Columbus branch of the N.A.A.C.P. has called for the officer, who, video shows, opened fire as Mr. Young drove forward, to be fired. Ms. Young’s family said in a statement on Friday that the body-camera footage shows that her death was “not only avoidable, but also a gross misuse of power and authority.”

People represent different countries during seminars on conflict scenarios with China, organised for youth by the Kuomintang (KMT) party, in Taipei, Taiwan May 21, 2023. Younger voters are again playing a role - but this time they are gravitating to dark horse candidate who has become the DPP's closest challenger. Ko Wen-je, a 64-year-old former Taipei mayor, has won over many younger voters with plain talk on issues such as high housing costs rather than focusing on the China threat. Some younger voters may show their hands late, so Ko's appeal to that demographic could close the gap with Lai. Although it may have a healthy lead in opinion polls, the DPP is acutely aware of the dangers of losing younger voters.

At what age should kids become financially independent?

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Aug 29 (Reuters) - At what age should American kids become financially independent? In almost every category, Baby Boomers expect people to become financially independent a year or two earlier compared to what Gen Z has to say. With health insurance, for instance, adult kids can typically stay on parent plans until the age of 26. BE STRATEGIC ABOUT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEThe reality is the parents do indeed help adult kids out financially: 68% of them have made such a sacrifice, according to Bankrate. For instance, if such help has erased your own emergency fund, or depleted your retirement accounts, that is not going to help anybody – and, in fact, will boomerang on those kids later if you become dependent on them.

Many of today's college undergrads have gone through school knowing student loan payments were on pause indefinitely and the prospect of widespread cancelation was closer to becoming reality than ever. Just over half of next year's college graduates expect to carry student loan debt, and within that group, almost 70% say their debt will influence the jobs they consider after graduation, according to Handshake's latest report that surveyed 1,148 students in the class of 2024. A remaining 17% of students said their college debt would not impact their career choices after school, and 14% said they are neutral on the matter. As a result, many students say finding a job with a high salary and with a company that offers attractive benefits, like student loan repayment benefits, are all "top of mind," Williams tells CNBC Make It. Young workers with debt also want flexibility in where and when they work, though many say it goes beyond the matter of preference.
