The news comes after a major report earlier this year revealed the Navy's biggest projects, including new Virginia-class submarines, were facing severe delays of up to three years. Absent today's intervention, I have zero confidence that Navy shipbuilding will get back on track." The Navy attributed shipbuilding delays across its top programs to COVID-19's impact on the workforce and supply chain. "Somehow, the Navy continues to assert that commitments to INDOPACOM and our AUKUS partners remain on track" despite Virginia-class delays, he said. Virginia-class submarines are considered vital to the US' role in deterring and, if necessary, fighting China.

The best way to approach health care, in addition to traditional medicine, in Hotz's opinion, is social prescribing. In my nearly six years with the company, I worked in almost all of the Apple Store locations in the Dallas-Forth Worth area. Launch day preparations began a week ahead. They wanted to keep launch day special, with first reactions being from actual customers instead of Apple employees. Pretty much everyone was a salesperson on launch day. Introduction to the federal funds rateDefinition and purpose of the federal fund rateThe federal funds rate, or fed funds rate, is the interest rate set by the Federal Open Markets Committee. The Federal Reserve lowered the federal fund rate on September 19, 2024, to stop aggressive inflation and prevent a recession. Today, the federal fund rate is 5.00%, with the federal fund target rate being 4.75% to 5.00%. How the federal funds rate worksThe federal funds rate, or the overnight rate, is the interest commercial banks charge when they lend money to one another for extremely short-term periods — literally, overnight. The consensus view is that lower rates will stave off a recession by stimulating economic growth through lower borrowing costs. The hidden danger of a double cutHowever, David Kelly of JPMorgan Asset Management warned that lower rates aren't an economic panacea. In fact, the chief global strategist thinks these cuts could, paradoxically, cause the economy to slow in the near term. Advertisement"The important thing to recognize is that cutting interest rates at the start doesn't stimulate the economy at all," Kelly said on CNBC. "There is a J-curve effect; it actually slows the economy because people begin to anticipate those lower rates, so they want to wait for lower rates."

CNN —In some corners of society, there appears to be a shift in the way people talk about kids. Every so often, a provocative social media post sets off predictably polarizing discourse about the presence of children in daily life. The implication (joking or otherwise) is that children are a nuisance and adults shouldn’t have to endure them if they don’t want to. The people behind them aren’t part of some organized movement nor are they actually lobbying for the exclusion of children from public spaces. Rather, Berg understands online disdain for kids partly as a performative response to rhetoric from political and religious conservatives.

CNN —Iranian hackers sent unsolicited information they stole from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign to people who were affiliated with Joe Biden’s campaign over the summer, federal law enforcement officials said Wednesday. The law enforcement statement Wednesday said that the hackers’ efforts to send information to US media outlets have continued. Law enforcement officials have previously said that those efforts also included an unsuccessful attempt to hack the Biden-Harris campaign. The Iranian hackers did breach the email account of longtime Trump ally Roger Stone to target campaign staff in June, CNN has reported. Investigators believe the suspected Iranian hackers breached Stone’s account and then used that email account to try to break into the account of a senior Trump campaign official as part of a persistent effort to access campaign networks.

CNN —Microsoft said Tuesday that Russian operatives have in recent weeks intensified their online attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign by producing and disseminating videos promoting “outlandish conspiracy theories” aimed at stoking US racial and political divisions. One of the inauthentic videos, which Microsoft said had been viewed millions of times, claimed to show Harris supporters attacking an attendee of a Donald Trump rally. Russian operatives promoted the latter story through a website pretending to be a local San Francisco media outlet, Microsoft researchers said. CNN has requested comment on the Microsoft report from the Harris-Walz campaign and from the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC. Tehran has conducted a covert social media activity in an effort to undercut Trump’s candidacy, US officials have said.

Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

The Iran-backed militant group said the wireless devices began to explode around 3:30 p.m. local time in a targeted Israeli attack on Hezbollah operatives. Experts say the explosions, unprecedented in their scale and nature, underscore Hezbollah’s vulnerability as its communication network was compromised to deadly effect. CNN could not geolocate the image, but has verified it was published Tuesday, the same day as the explosions. One of the main takeaways was that the biggest threats to dollar dominance are swelling US debt levels and fiscal deficits, which officials in Washington could step up to tackle. "The biggest challenge to US dollar dominance is the US itself given the mounting public debt levels and elevated fiscal deficits," JPMorgan said, in a note summarizing the webinar. For instance, many alarmists have focused on the dollar's share in foreign reserve holdings, often pointing out that the foreign central banks have piled into gold as an alternative. But this fixation omits the fact that bank deposits, sovereign wealth fund assets, and other dollar instruments have been on the rise among reserve holdings, JPMorgan said. "In China's case, it has had an explicit target to bring down dollar holdings in FX reserve but has shifted USD holdings to state-owned entities.

This is the first time since the October 7 attacks that Blinken has visited the Middle East without visiting Israel. The top US diplomat typically uses the visits to Israel to press the Israeli government on the critical issues surrounding the war, including the hostage and ceasefire deal. However, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has frequently rebuffed the administration in the hours and days following those meetings. The last time Blinken visited Israel, he said that Netanyahu had agreed to the “bridging proposal” meant to close to close the remaining gaps with Hamas. Blinken said earlier this month that “it’s incumbent on both parties” – Israel and Hamas – “to get to yes” on the “remaining issues” related to a ceasefire and hostage deal.

The negotiations over the Special Measures Agreement, known as the SMA, strained the US-South Korea alliance during the Trump administration. Former President Donald Trump demanded Seoul pay up to 400% more for the presence of the 28,500 US troops in the country during negotiations over the current agreement. Under the current agreement, South Korea pays about $1 billion annually, representing an increase of about 13.9% over previous SMAs. Earlier this year, Trump said that he did not think the South Korea is paying enough based on the last agreement. One complication is that a deal will have to be approved by South Korea’s national assembly — which is dominated by the opposition party to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
