Email icon An envelope. It indicates the ability to send an email. Trump and his company have cases in 3 NYC courthouses this week — but only 1 could really hurt himSpencer Platt/Getty ImagesDonald Trump's lawyers will be in a New York state of mind this week, when they'll argue on behalf of the former president and his company before state judges in three courthouses within the city limits. Just one of the three cases could ultimately do Trump severe damage — New York Attorney General Letitia James' $250 million fraud lawsuit, which seeks to run him, his three eldest children, and his company, the Trump Organization, out of New York state. Opening statements in that trial will begin on Monday.
Trump lawyers will defend him and his business empire in 3 New York City courthouses this week. The state AG's fraud lawsuit is in court Thursday; jury selection is starting in a Bronx lawsuit. But the other cases in New York City courthouses this week could cause significant reputational damage and several million dollars in penalties if their juries reach guilty verdicts. There is the Trump Organization criminal tax-fraud trial just up the street, which will start its second week Monday with opening statements by company lawyers and Manhattan prosecutors. Then there is the third Trump case, a 2015 civil lawsuit which begins jury selection in state court in the Bronx on Monday.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand — New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern appeared awestruck Thursday to be standing in the Antarctic hut of explorer Ernest Shackleton. “I think when you’re a kid and you read stories about Shackleton, you’d never imagine you’d have the opportunity to come. So, I feel pretty lucky,” she said from inside the hut that was built more than a century ago. Conservationists say new marine protected areas and rules to prevent overfishing in Antarctica are desperately needed, but that Russia could use its veto-like powers to once again block progress. The motivation for Russia, which did not respond to requests for comment this week, remains unclear.

"Now — with a turbulent, unpredictable economy causing fear of recession, migrations are slowing, occupancy rates are falling and rent prices are following suit." Data from real estate database RealPage shows that in the third quarter of the year — a typically robust leasing period — rental demand turned "moderately negative" as leasing traffic plummeted. "The faster those things show up in consumer price inflation, the faster the inflation steps down, the sooner the Fed will back off." According to Zumper, more than half of the 100 US cities measured in its monthly national rent report posted month-over-month price declines in October. Lawler's analysis, as well as the recent rental market data, both suggest things are trending in the right direction.
Matthias Holzhey of UBS shared his outlook for the US housing market in 2023. The sky might not be falling yet in the US real estate market, but home values will soon start to, warns a new report from UBS. "Prices look overvalued," said Matthias Holzhey, the head of Swiss real estate at UBS Global Wealth Management, in a recent interview with Insider. How to navigate the housing market in 2023There are four more key drivers of demand in the housing market, Holzhey said: income growth, risk asset returns, interest rates, and psychology. However, today's real estate market bears little resemblance to past markets.
Sparring between Disney and Comcast CEOs over Hulu has stoked uncertainty among insiders about the streamer's future. Many wonder how Hulu will stay differentiated from Disney+ if Disney becomes Hulu's sole owner. Insiders and advertisers alike are also watching to see if Hulu will lose some of its distinctiveness as Disney invests more in Disney+. "That was a clear departure from Disney being family-focused and Hulu being general entertainment," said a second former Hulu exec. And as the CEOs posture, people inside the streamer are eager for leadership to tell them, as a third former company insider put it, "what Hulu means to the Walt Disney Company."

Workers in Shanghai's Changning district put up fencing on Oct. 7, 2022, around a neighborhood lockdown after reports of new Covid cases. BEIJING — New Covid cases are spiking across mainland China, prompting many local authorities to tighten controls on movement. About 4.8% of China's gross domestic product was negatively affected by Covid controls as of Monday, according to a model from Nomura. On Tuesday, many schools in the central Chinese city of Xi'an cancelled in-person classes for most students, according to a local news outlet. A hashtag about the sudden closures was one of the top-trending items on Weibo, China's Twitter-like social media platform.
Mario Tama | Getty ImagesDETROIT — New cars are slowly becoming more widely available, as supply chain bottlenecks finally start to ease. But now, an increasing number of Americans might not want them or be able to afford them. With the Federal Reserve aggressively hiking interest rates to fight inflation, consumers are finding that the cost of financing a new car is suddenly a lot higher than it was even earlier this year. That means many Americans may no longer to be able to afford the new cars that are starting to arrive on dealer lots. That, combined with rising interest rates, is pushing more car shoppers to look at used vehicles.
Cosplayers dressed in Mandalorian armor and Black Widow pose for a photo during Day 4 of New York Comic Con 2021 at Jacob Javits Center on October 10, 2021 in New York City. (NEW YORK — New York Comic Con isn't quite what it was before the pandemic. But it's still a way off from the approximately 250,000 fans who attended the New York event in 2019. ReedPop, the company that owns New York Comic Con, is fine with being conservative two years after the coronavirus forced organizers to make the event entirely virtual. The virus is still around, so Covid masks will still be required at all times indoors this year, although fans won't need to present proof of vaccination.
It's an interesting moment in which several cities are boasting housing deals not seen in years. However, for those who can still afford a home purchase, there is some good news — the real estate market is becoming less competitive. With less Americans purchasing homes, prospective buyers are finally beginning to see home price declines in cities across the country — some more than others. To determine what markets present a good deal for homebuyers, Realtor.com analyzed housing data from the nation's 250 largest cities. Its researchers were able to identify that several cities across the country are softening for homebuyers.
LDC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group focused on reshaping perceptions of U.S. Latinos through data and economic research. In 2020, Latino consumption was measured at $1.84 trillion. Three-quarters of the Latino population were concentrated in just 10 states in 2020: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina and Texas. According to the report, Latino growth staved off a decline in the population and labor force in three states — New Jersey, New York and Illinois — from 2010 to 2018. As a result, Latino real GDP contracted a small amount in 2020, by 0.8% compared to 4.4% for non-Latinos.
Commercial property is a bright spot in Chinese real estate, in contrast with the doom and gloom of the residential housing market. Likewise, property group CIFI Holdings posted a 23% year-on-year drop in home sales in China for the first half, but reported a 69.5% lift in its property investment revenue. While some investors sold assets to stay liquid, Spiro said the commercial sector generally has more supportive government and fiscal policies. All in all, the Chinese commercial property sector's resilience lies in its ability to rebound faster than its residential counterpart. Down but not outBut unlike housing, the commercial sector is rebounding particularly after lockdowns ended and government incentives kicked in, CBRE said.
Six years on, our Airbnb properties brought in $118,000 in bookings last month. In March 2020, after only three months on Airbnb, we were set to cash-flow over $7,000 after expenses. In September 2020, we bought our third property: a four-bedroom cabin in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, near the Smoky Mountains. With income from the Nashville properties, we invested $35,000 in a cosmetic rehab of the Gatlinburg cabin — new floors, light fixtures, toilets, mirrors, stairs, paint, and landscaping. When we opened in November 2020, the place booked up almost immediately; revenue in that first month was $14,158.85.
That's when I started reporting on them, and like any good nerd I was compelled by what scientists could learn with these "brain computer interfaces." The race for implantable brain chips has been a long, deliberate marathon. Graham Felstead, who has severe paralysis, was the first person to have a BCI inserted via the blood vessels. Brain chips will enable them to perform simple actions on their own and reduce the need for round-the-clock care. "When we started in 2015 and I was pitching venture capitalists on brain computer interfaces, no one knew what a brain computer interface was," says Matt Angle, the CEO of Paradromics.
Meanwhile, Google has promised to launch its next phone with a brand new chip, and its first Apple Watch competitor, this fall. Samsung typically announces new earbuds, tablets and smartwatches to compete with Apple's iPad, AirPods and Apple Watch, too. It also announced the Galaxy Buds 2 headphones and the Galaxy Watch 4. Still, Apple's mixed reality headset would mark the company's first major product launch since it unveiled the Apple Watch in 2015. Here's what to expect: Google has announced gadgets in October for years.
As a 17-year-old student at The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, I can't even vote. I would spend the summer of 2021 creating a website — SenateTrades, I dubbed it — that analyzed senators' public financial disclosures. During an April congressional hearing, there was some bipartisan consensus that changes need to be made to congressional stock trading. My high school social studies class certainly didn't cover congressional stock trading. George McCain is a rising senior at The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
Legal sales of recreational marijuana are set to begin in New York City in late 2022. I visited one of the first licensed farms in upstate New York and saw how far there still is to go. Sometime later this year — no one seems to know exactly when — New York City will legally allow recreational marijuana to be sold, opening what's expected to be one of the most lucrative legal cannabis markets in the world. And right now, in preparation for the feeding frenzy, dozens of farmers are growing the marijuana that will become New York's first legal crop. Last Friday, I visited one such farm two hours north of New York City in rural, idyllic Hudson, New York — and saw just how far there is to go before sales open.

President Trump's campaign ended July with $120 million, about three times more than the roughly $39 million it reported at this point in 2016. This doesn't cost Trump's campaign anything but helps get his message to voters. In addition to the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and several pro-Trump super PACs have planned heavy spending before Election Day. The Trump campaign ended July with more than $120 million, compared with about $99 million for Biden. Some areas of Trump campaign spending have even dropped from 2016 to 2020.
