T Dawg, as VanDerveer is affectionately called on campus, will get there in 45, with 38 of them at Stanford. She will also do it with a higher winning percentage — about 82 percent of her games versus Krzyzewski’s 77 percent. championships, even though many of the nation’s best women’s basketball athletes can’t play for her because they don’t meet Stanford’s academic standards. Now, collectives of big donors at competing schools are paying large sums to attract and keep athletes not just in football but also in other sports, including women’s basketball. But Stanford donors, affluent as they are, have so far not stepped up as much as those of other schools.

RAPID CITY, S.D.—Jose Hernandez set off to work one evening in January, wobbling on a refurbished bike with a deflated tire, a bag with his valuables strapped across his back. He was headed to Burger King, where he works as a cook for about $15 an hour, often on the 5 p.m.-to-midnight shift. It is a five-minute drive from the homeless shelter where he lives. But Hernandez, 45, doesn’t have a car. So he bikes—on wheels given to him by Roberta Harmon , a street minister recognizable by her white heart-shaped glasses and fiery red hair who fixes up old bicycles for homeless people who need them to get to jobs.

Federal student loan borrowers who initially took out smaller loan amounts may be eligible for debt cancellation sooner than they anticipated. The SAVE plan, which reduces payments for millions of borrowers, opened for enrollment last August. But some of its benefits, like the shortened path to forgiveness, were not set to take effect until July 2024. SAVE cuts that term by half for people who initially borrowed $12,000 or less and reduces the repayment timeline for those who originally borrowed $21,000 or less. For example, if someone originally borrowed $13,000 in loans, any remaining balance would be forgiven after 11 years of payments.

Her position, which she described as “complicated,” speaks to the challenge Israel’s peace movement faces when coming to terms with the worst massacre of Jewish people since the Holocaust. Some activists complain that authorities are attempting to equate peace activism with support for Hamas. Some Jewish Israelis have lost their jobs or have been publicly sanctioned for speaking out in favour of Gaza, say activists. An Israeli soldier looks on as they operate in Gaza in a handout photo released on Friday. IDF/ReutersAfter a week-long truce between Israel and Hamas expired, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are once again “out to destroy” Hamas, according to a spokesperson. "Sleeping Israelis once again woke up to the sound of the red siren of Hamas rockets falling at us once again from Gaza," Spielman told CNN, adding that "there have been multiple rockets" that were intercepted Friday. Asked about the IDF targeting civilian areas in Gaza, Spielman said: “We don’t want to see Gaza civilians die, but Hamas is operating directly from within those areas, and we have to ask ourselves what is the alternative?" Spielman also argued that Hamas was not targeting troops, "they were targeting directly toward civilians."

The two new chicks come just a year after the Capital Kiwi Project reintroduced the country’s iconic national bird to the city of around 400,000 people. The brown kiwi is one of New Zealand’s most common kiwi species, but according to New Zealand’s Department of Conservation, the birds could be extinct in the wild within two generations without adequate conservation and support. Another 18 brown kiwi chicks are expected to hatch as part of the Capital Kiwi Project, which hopes to restore a large-scale wild population of kiwi to New Zealand’s capital. 95% of wild born kiwi in New Zealand are killed before they reach adulthood, according to Save the Kiwi. Where they get hammered is stoats eating the chicks before they get up to their fighting weight,” Capital Kiwi Project team leader Paul Ward told CNN earlier this year.

There's good news for fixed-income investors heading into next year, according to Goldman Sachs Asset Management. After a dismal 2023, next year will be "the year of the bond," predicted Lindsay Rosner, head of multisector fixed income investing at the money manager. "Fixed income is a great place to be," she said in an interview with CNBC. The investment firm recently released its outlook for 2024 and called the recent run of negative fixed income returns in response to "an inflation and policy shock" an anomaly and not the trend. "Given [that] duration can be your friend again, things are lining up to put you in a really good position in fixed income."

A deal for a temporary cease fire was inching into view in Israel's war against Hamas, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tempered expectations by vowing that the war would continue even if a deal is reached. “We are at war, and we will continue the war,” he said. Israel has vowed to continue the war until it destroys Hamas’ military capabilities and returns all hostages. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose government maintains ties with Hamas officials, said Turkey’s foreign minister and intelligence chief were working with Qatari officials to negotiate releases. Hamas has released four hostages, Israel has rescued one, and the bodies of two were found near Shifa.
