The turmoil surrounding Biden’s future is creating a grim mood inside the White House, CNN’s MJ Lee reported. • If that happens, would senior party leaders be willing to go to the president and argue that his position is unsustainable? There is an almost surreal quality to the frenzied political debate as Biden digs in. There would be no guarantee that a new standard-bearer would do better than Biden, who has already beaten Trump once. Black Democratic voters helped to rescue Biden’s primary campaign in 2020 and to put him in the White House.

Pennsylvania is one of the states that Mr. Biden almost certainly must win if he hopes to retain the White House. “President Biden is a fierce supporter of unions, and he won’t cross a picket line,” Lauren Hitt, a Biden campaign spokeswoman, said in a statement. After Philadelphia, Mr. Biden will travel to Harrisburg for a community organizing event with union members on Sunday afternoon. “They don’t need scripted remarks,” said Steve Sisolak, the former Democratic governor of Nevada, who supports Mr. Biden. Be out there, mingle with your folks.”Despite doubts from many Democrats, Mr. Biden has defiantly insisted that he will stay in the race.

CNN —Amid the ongoing fallout from Joe Biden’s debate performance, talk in many top Democratic circles has already moved to who Kamala Harris’ running mate would be. A more open race, these top Democrats hope, would be for Harris’ running mate, with a focus on leading Democratic governors. “President Biden is our nominee, Vice President Harris is our running mate, and we will win this November,” he said. The anti-Trump coalition cannot afford to discount the strengths of the nominated Democratic running mate and current vice president. Harris’ answer: She’d turn around and say to him, “Why are you being so weird?”As vice president, Harris has tended to be known more for her word salads than sharp elbows like that.

Now, with Biden facing an increasingly uncertain political future amid the fallout from his shaky debate performance, Republicans are trying to determine what the Democratic incumbent stepping aside would actually mean for the Trump campaign. “Chaos is our friend,” a person close to Trump said. Even if Biden is not the Democratic nominee, the Trump campaign believes the issues likely to decide the election will remain the same. After Carlson suggested Harris would replace Biden on the Democratic ticket, Trump predicted: “Not really. Opinion | If Biden Doesn’t Run, Nominate …

To the Editor:It pains me to agree with “To Serve His Country, President Biden Should Leave the Race” (editorial, June 30), but even more painful is the reality that President Biden may need to take matters one step further and resign the presidency right now, and allow Kamala Harris to run for president as an incumbent. An advantage of a long primary season is the time afforded to coalesce around the eventual nominee. Four years ago, the Democratic Party determined that Kamala Harris would be a worthy successor to Mr. Biden. As president, she would bring energy and enthusiasm, which the 2024 campaign has been wholly lacking. By resigning now, Mr. Biden would permit the Democratic Party to unite under a candidate who can start at once on the essential task of defeating his predecessor.

“It would be a Category 5 hurricane,” said one top Democratic official nervous about Biden considering what would happen if the president stepped aside. Biden campaign aides have spent the last couple of days pointing to metrics like some of their best grassroots fundraising days and a surge in job applications since Thursday. Biden is heading to the Camp David presidential retreat where he was expected to spend the rest of the weekend. Democratic operatives always like to mock headlines that describe them as “in disarray.” Now some tell CNN they worry they could end up in more disarray than ever. “President Biden is the nominee and he’s going to remain the nominee,” said Cutter, who is on contract to produce the convention.

Asked whether Biden would exit the race, Biden campaign spokesperson Seth Schuster responded: “No.”“There’s no basis for that,” one Biden adviser also told CNN Friday morning. The Biden campaign will hold an all-staff meeting Friday afternoon, two Biden campaign officials told CNN, part of what they said is a routine pattern of Friday meetings. “It’s hard to debate a liar,” Biden told patrons at an Atlanta-area Waffle House following the debate. Big lies.”Pro-Biden political world fretsIn the broader pro-Biden and anti-Trump political universe, the panic over Biden’s debate performance was much clearer on Friday morning. CNN —Following Thursday night’s disastrous debate performance by President Joe Biden, Democrats are in full panic mode, scrambling to figure out what comes next. The most important person is now Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris, who has been continually scrutinized and criticized, is the only figure who can save Biden’s candidacy at this point. For all the head scratching about her tenure as vice president, it is not impossible for her to achieve this goal. Harris is the key to Biden’s survival.

Still, conversations about a possible drift toward Donald Trump, though, are evident in the several Jewish elected Democratic leaders who grimaced and ducked when asked by CNN to discuss their sense of Jewish support for Biden. Talking with Jewish voters in Michigan, “I’ve had a couple of people say point blank, ‘How could any Jew vote for a Democrat?’” said Troy Zukowski, the West Michigan chair of the Michigan Jewish Democrats. The president does have some key Jewish voices of support in important places. Trump’s support among Jewish voters in 2020, at 30% according to Associated Press exit polls, was the highest for a Republican presidential candidate in decades. The expected central theme of that effort, according to one of the people involved, will be: As a Jewish American, do you feel safer than you did four years ago?

A few hours after Columbia University canceled its main commencement ceremony following weeks of pro-Palestinian student protests, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania was in his office in Harrisburg, taking stock of the ways he sees universities letting students down. “Our colleges, in many cases, are failing young people,” he said in an interview this week. “Failing to teach information that is necessary to form thoughtful perspectives. They are willing to let certain forms of hate pass by and condemn others more strongly.”Mr. Shapiro — the leader of a pre-eminent battleground state, a rising Democrat and a proudly observant Jew — has also emerged as one of his party’s most visible figures denouncing the rise in documented antisemitism after the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

David Shapiro, a cerebral yet deeply personal poet aligned with the so-called New York School, whose highly lyrical work balanced copious literary allusions with dreamlike imagery and intimate reflections drawn from family life, died on Saturday in the Bronx. His wife, Lindsay Stamm Shapiro, said the cause of his death, in a hospice facility, was Parkinson’s disease. Mr. Shapiro published 11 volumes of poetry during his six-decade career. His book “You Are You: Writings and Interviews on Poetry, Art and the New York School” is scheduled to be published this fall. In recent years, the free-market economist and the contrarian Austrian school he led midcentury have been turned into a hashtag deployed by tax-wary workers. Ludwig von Mises From Mises Institute“Ludwig von Mises is Latin America’s leading economist,” declared the headline of a Bloomberg opinion piece earlier this month by economist Tyler Cowen. His free-market policy prescriptions, framed by an economic thinking centered on human behavior and individual choice, were widely considered out of fashion at the time. “That is my jam!” Shapiro said of the Austrian school. “If you start to understand the concept of the Austrian economic school,” Moicano said in a recent YouTube video, “you’re going to understand that’s what I need: free market, liberties, and wealth, my brother.

Maybe…Earlier attempts to ban or force a sale of TikTok often haven't stood up in court. Other parties, like TikTok creators, may launch separate legal challenges in the coming weeks, as they have done in the past. AdvertisementTrump's 2020 order to ban TikTok was halted by a federal judge who said it likely exceeded executive authority. While the bill is framed around forcing US ownership of TikTok, it's likely to result in a ban, which strengthens the free-speech argument. Congress hasn't proven that an outright sale or ban of TikTok is the only way to protect national-security interests.
