A staffer of vice presidential candidate JD Vance called Springfield City Manager Bryan Heck on September 9 and asked if there was any truth in rumors that Haitian immigrants were taking and eating pets in Springfield, Heck told the Journal. I told them these claims were baseless.”“Yes, that call was made,” Springfield Mayor Rob Rue told CNN’s “Laura Coates Live” Thursday. Although the false claims about Haitian immigrants abusing animals have been widely discredited, Trump and Vance have doubled down since the debate. Asked Sunday by CNN’s Dana Bash to back up his claims, Vance, a US senator from Ohio, said he has received concerns from constituents, though he did not provide evidence. CNN —Dramatic footage has emerged showing the moment a man slipped and fell down a steep mountain while hiking in China’s eastern Anhui province on Monday. The 42-year-old man, named Yang Meng, was hiking in the Fanzengjian mountains when he slipped and fell, capturing the moment on a 360-degree camera. The close-up view shows him skidding down a rain-slicked slope before a tree stops his fall and saves his life. In a later video shared on the platform, Yang said he had not been badly injured in the fall, but sustained some bruising on his left leg. Chinese state media described Bebinca, which made landfall Monday, as the strongest storm to hit Shanghai since 1949.

Small-cap stocks are poised for a significant rally, Goldman Sachs' Greg Tuorto said. The portfolio manager pointed to lower interest rates and a promising economic backdrop for small-caps. The presidential election could also be a positive catalyst, leading to a catch-up rally, he said. That's according to Greg Tuorto, a portfolio manager at Goldman Sachs Asset Management who says he sees a big "catch-up" rally coming for small-cap stocks. It also means lots of talk from the experts about "normalizing the yield curve" in the bond market — meaning getting back to a setup where bonds with longer maturities yield higher rates than those with shorter-term maturities. That's referred to as "yield curve inversion," which has historically signaled an upcoming recession. Currently, however, the yield curve looks more like a check mark than a gradually rising hill. An inverted Treasury yield curve messes with that dynamic. Everyone, from private citizens to multinational corporations benefits from a normalized yield curve because normal means less uncertainty, which means more predictability.

Now that the Fed has cut rates, mortgage rates may not drop much further in the near term. But if the Fed doesn't lower rates as much as expected this year, mortgage rates may hold steady or even inch up. But rates are still expected to come down further, so it may also be worth waiting to see how low mortgage rates go. 5-Year Mortgage Rate TrendsHere's how 30-year and 15-year mortgage rates have trended over the last five years, according to Freddie Mac data. Mortgage rates are determined by a variety of different factors, including larger economic trends, Federal Reserve policy, your state's current mortgage rates, the type of loan you're getting, and your personal financial profile.

Washington CNN —President Joe Biden wrapped a meeting with his Cabinet on Friday, his first high-profile convening of his advisers in a year as he tries to set his post-presidential legacy. Ahead of the meeting, a White House official said Biden would instruct Cabinet members to “sprint to the finish,” as he looks to burnish legacy items while ensuring as much of his agenda is implemented before a potential second Trump presidency. And, he will tell his Cabinet to bring to him directly any hurdles or obstacles they are facing to get things done,” the official said ahead of the meeting. Administration officials have serious doubts a deal can be struck before Biden leaves office, and tensions in the region are only escalating. “The president will direct his Cabinet to get to work and make the next four months as productive as any other period in our administration,” the official said.

Protesters hold placards reading 'Abolish punishment for abortion' as they protest South Korean abortion laws in Gwanghwamun plaza in Seoul on July 7, 2018. efired/iStockphoto/Getty ImagesBy not passing abortion laws, the National Assembly is “not doing its job,” said Cho Hee-kyoung, a law professor at Hongik University in Seoul. Changing attitudes to abortionDespite the country previously having highly restrictive abortion laws, abortion has not historically been the lightning rod in South Korea that it has been in the United States. If overpopulation had once prompted the government to push abortions, South Korea was now dealing with the opposite problem. It is impossible to know the true number of abortions that take place each year in South Korea because the procedure is unregulated.

The Bank of Japan kept its benchmark interest rate steady at "around 0.25%" — the highest rate since 2008 — at the conclusion of a two-day meeting Friday. Japan's economy has recovered moderately, the central bank said in its official statement, while acknowledging "some weakness has been seen in part." BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said last month that the central bank would continue to raise interest rates if the economy and inflation stayed in line with the central bank's projection. On Thursday, The U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 50 basis points to a range of 4.75% to 5.0%.

CNN —Almost three decades ago, Richard Hays, a United Methodist minister and the soon-to-be dean of Duke Divinity School, wrote what quickly became the go-to traditionalist Christian argument against same-sex marriage. Fuller Theological Seminary, where Christopher Hays is a professor, also demands agreement with a faith statement that opposes same-sex marriage. Even as support for same-sex marriage has plateaued in the last few years, recent surveys from Gallup find that more than one in five Gen Z Americans identify as LGBTQ, and nearly 90% of Americans under 30 years old support same-sex marriage. The reversal from Hays certainly will not settle the debate among Christians when it comes from same-sex marriage. But I hope it makes opponents of same-sex marriage at least pause and wonder — is there a faithful path forward that makes room for people like me?

New York CNN —Three Mile Island, the site of worst nuclear disaster in the United States, is reopening and will exclusively sell the power to Microsoft as the company searches for energy sources to fuel its AI ambitions. Microsoft will purchase the carbon-free energy produced from it to power its data centers to support artificial intelligence. Clean energy advocates and businesses alike are looking towards nuclear energy as a source of zero-carbon power that is a reliable baseload source. Three Mile Island, located near Harrisburg, is best known for being the most serious accident at a commercial nuclear power plant in US history when it experienced the partial meltdown of one of its two reactors. Demand for energy is expected to surge as tech giants need more sources of power to fuel their AI needs, especially nuclear power, which is carbon-free and helps them maintain their lofty climate goals.
