Trade groups say Chinese electric vehicles pose an "existential threat" to the U.S. auto industry. But faced with a growing preference for hybrids at home and a brutal price war, Chinese automakers want to export more vehicles abroad. "It's hard to process that because we don't see Chinese cars on American roads," said Dunne Insights founder and CEO Michael Dunne. You're going to see Chinese cars all over the place." So how do Chinese EVs stack up?

New York residency is especially important to Mr. Kennedy because his running mate, Nicole Shanahan, lists California as her home. Mr. Kennedy, 70, an environmental lawyer, spends most of his time at a home in Los Angeles that he shares with his wife, the actress Cheryl Hines. “New York has been his residence continuously since 1964, and Mr. Kennedy has deep ties to it,” Mr. Savino said in the statement. Mr. Kennedy revealed the bear-dumping in a video he posted on social media just before a critical New Yorker profile that included the same anecdote was published. After the bear story became public — resulting in a barrage of public criticism and mockery — Mr. Kennedy sought to fire back, placing a post on X.com on Tuesday, attacking the “mainstream media.”“The more you smear me,” Mr. Kennedy wrote, “the more I’ll keep speaking.”

Opinion | Nate Silver on How Kamala Harris Changed the Odds

You know, Hillary Clinton, who was, I think, kind of a terrible candidate, won the popular vote by two points. So I don’t think they gave her a very good hand to play. It doesn’t matter who you are, it matters that you’re right and you’re able to prove it or bet on it in some way. What wasn’t in the Harris model that should have been?” “Yeah, maybe you really can meme your way to victory. And there’s something in it that I don’t think she can explain how she does it, but it makes her a fascinating leader.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A former Cornell University student arrested for posting statements threatening violence against Jewish people on campus last fall after the start of the war in Gaza was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison. Patrick Dai, of suburban Rochester, New York, was accused by federal officials in October of posting anonymous threats to shoot and stab Jewish people on a Greek life forum. The threats came during a spike in antisemitic and anti-Muslim rhetoric related to the war and rattled Jewish students on the upstate New York campus. Dai pleaded guilty in April to posting threats to kill or injure another person using interstate communications. He was sentenced in federal court to 21 months in prison and three years of supervised release by Judge Brenda Sannes, according to federal prosecutors.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s independent presidential campaign was dealt a blow on Monday when a judge ruled that his petition to appear on New York’s ballot was invalid, saying Mr. Kennedy had used a “sham” address to maintain his New York residency. The ruling, if it stands, would keep Mr. Kennedy off the ballot in a state where he lived for much of his adult life and could endanger his efforts to be placed on the ballot in dozens of other states. His lawyer, William F. Savino, said in an email that Mr. Kennedy had “always planned to appeal any adverse ruling.” Later Monday, the campaign said it would file a lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan. “The 12th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution governs the residency of presidential and vice-presidential candidates, not state law,” said the campaign’s senior counsel, Paul Rossi. “If state court judges are going to ignore the Constitution, the federal courts must step in to protect voters’ rights.”

Depreciation costs could lead to AI stock price declines and valuation scrutiny, according to Baird's Ted Mortonson. AdvertisementThe lurking problem is that the useful lifetime of AI GPU chips can be a lot shorter than many expect, especially as AI chips go through an ever-accelerating innovation cycle, leading to higher-than-expected depreciation expenses that ultimately drag down profits. For example, the bank expects Alphabet to record $28 billion in depreciation costs in 2026, which is 24% more than current consensus estimates of $22.6 billion. AdvertisementBut even that has its limits because of how quickly Nvidia is releasing new GPU chips. And for Mortonson, it all comes back to the return on invested AI capital.

Some guests hoped Mr. Trump would signal that he was recalibrating after a series of damaging mistakes. He did not. According to two people present, Mr. Trump himself also brought up his remark, made two days earlier at a gathering of the National Association of Black Journalists, in which he had questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity.

This is Street Wars, a weekly series on the battle for space on New York’s streets and sidewalks. It is the first street to greet many travelers as they arrive at Pennsylvania Station or the Port Authority Bus Terminal. It is the backdrop to any night spent at a Broadway show or Madison Square Garden, or just out on the town. At the best of times, it is the Champs-Élysées of hot dog carts: a grand thoroughfare of vendors, tourists and commuters whose bustle brings the city to life. Pedestrians crowd the sidewalk and overflow into an ad hoc expansion of it, created in 2016 when the city began to cordon off a lane of traffic and paint it gray.

More than four years after the coronavirus upended life in New York City, some of the most visible vestiges of the pandemic — outdoor dining structures erected outside thousands of restaurants — are facing a deadline that could see many of them razed. Restaurants that currently offer outdoor dining in sheds on sidewalks or in roadways and wish to continue doing so must apply to the city’s new outdoor dining program by Saturday night and comply with new guidelines, which some owners say will be costly. Business owners who do not apply must take down their existing setups or face fines. As of Friday afternoon, more than 1,900 restaurants had applied to take part in the new program, which is known as Dining Out N.Y.C. The volume of applications represented a significant drop from the number of restaurants that applied to take part in the temporary outdoor dining program that sprang up at the height of the pandemic.
