Las Vegas and Its Big, Big Ambitions

It’s just past dusk on the Las Vegas Strip and traffic has come to a standstill. That’s usual for a weekend night, but this is Monday. Round-the-clock construction makes every excursion a dice roll with traffic, and these days everyone seems a loser. I turn right on Sands Avenue, just before the golden tower of the Wynn Las Vegas, and am so stunned by what I see that I join three dozen other cars illegally parked next to the crowded sidewalk. This is the Sphere, Vegas’s newest epic attraction.

Nvidia (NVDA): Investors who don't own Nvidia yet should use its recent weakness to start a position, Jim said. Insider Today: Automating away CEOs
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( Dan Defrancesco | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +9 min
Today is always a difficult day, particularly here in New York, as we remember the innocent lives lost 22 years ago. But the group that seems immune to those concerns — CEOs — is primed for being usurped by robots, writes Ed Zitron. Ed's argument is straightforward: CEOs get paid a lot despite not providing much value for their companies. For all the talk of CEOs being transformational leaders full of business ingenuity, many are nothing more than figureheads. The start of the regular NFL season kicks off the biggest sports-betting season of the year. Here are the battlegrounds to watch as Fanatics and ESPN Bet enter and Bet365 gains share. The NFL kicked off Thursday night, and so did the biggest season of the year for US sports betting. It ranked fourth among more than 40 apps in EKG's national panel of "secret shopper"-style app testers — behind only FanDuel, DraftKings, and PointsBet. "There's one strategy: you have to be early, you have to be ahead of the start of the season," Beynon said.

The UAE introduced a new regulatory body to oversee commercial gaming on Monday, made up of casino and gambling experts from the United States. Gambling is currently illegal in the UAE, where some laws are based on the Quran, which forbids the practice. The new federal body, called the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA), would create a “regulatory framework for a national lottery and commercial gaming,” according to Emirati state media WAM. “[GCGRA will] facilitate unlocking the economic potential of commercial gaming responsibly,” WAM said. “I look forward to establishing a robust regulatory body and framework for the UAE’s lottery and gaming industry,” Mullally said on his new appointment, according to WAM.

Eli Lilly not only reported a stellar second quarter, management was able to raise its full-year sales and adjusted earnings outlook as well. Though revenues were a tad short, earnings results were better than expected on a both a HAAP and adjusted basis. Constellation Brands' (STZ) sales and earnings results outpaced expectations. DuPont (DD) reported a good quarter prior to us initiating a position in the name. Why it matters: “For most of the last two decades, China’s economic growth has been a major driver of the global economy,” said Alex Etra, a strategist at data analytics firm Exante. That means that if China’s economy slows down, global economic growth slows down. ExxonMobil (XOM) may not be doing too much business with China, said Etra, but if Chinese growth slows, that means oil prices go down. Earlier this year, Bank of America compiled a list of the S&P 500 companies with the highest exposure to China. The grand total of all the private wealth in the world fell 2.4% to $454.4 trillion last year, according to the annual Credit Suisse and UBS global wealth report.

The chart below is meant to provide a high level view of the revenue exposure each of the 35 companies in our portfolio has to the world's second-largest economy. First, a couple caveats: Our energy exploration and production stocks Coterra Energy (CTRA) and Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) screen as having zero revenue exposure outside of the United States. Nvidia (NVDA) is another stock where the direct revenue exposure can be misleading. That makes the 60% revenue exposure to the Asia-Pacific region more concerning, even as mainland China realized organic sales growth during the quarter. As a result, total sales, services sales and wearables, home and accessories sales all set June quarter records in Greater China.

Turmoil in the Chinese economy can mean bad news for a range of popular stocks. And the global superpower has flashed warning signs in recent days, signaling stocks with exposure to the country could feel pressure. Other stocks to watch To be sure, exposure to China extends beyond the semi landscape.
