AdvertisementTrump picked Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to co-lead DOGE, a new government efficiency commission. Their aim is to cut government spending, and one idea they've floated is to ax federal agencies. Almost half a million people were employed in the Department of Veterans Affairs, while the Department of Education had just over 4,000. Most departments had six-figure average salaries, with the Department of Education and the Department of Energy having the highest averages. AdvertisementWhile DOGE can advise Trump on agencies to cut, the president-elect cannot act on it alone — making major changes to federal agencies would require congressional approval.

Not all of Trump’s picks are causing uproar. But in a conventional administration, controversies raging around at least four key Cabinet picks would be seen as a disaster. The president-elect’s son explains the planGaetz and several other Trump picks have caused consternation in some circles given the questions about their qualifications and past behavior. Crude oil storage tanks are seen from above at the Cushing oil hub, in Cushing, Oklahoma, March 24, 2016. Oil prices edged up on Monday after fighting between Russia and Ukraine intensified over the weekend, although concerns about fuel demand in China, the world's second-largest consumer, and forecasts of a global oil surplus weighed on markets. Russia unleashed its largest air strike on Ukraine in almost three months on Sunday, causing severe damage to Ukraine's power system. Investors also fretted over the pace and extent of interest rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve that has created uncertainty in global financial markets. In the U.S., the number of operating oil rigs fell by one to 478 last week, the lowest since the week to July 19, Baker Hughes data showed.

Glenview CEO Larry Robbins will join the CVS board effective immediately, alongside three other directors, which CVS said emerged from a "productive discussion" with Glenview. CVS' board will expand to 16 members. Glenview amassed a sizable stake in the healthcare conglomerate and worked with management in the lead-up to Lynch's ouster. Soon, Trump’s ability to fix America’s affordability crisis will collide head-on with another, perhaps more prominent, campaign trail promise: Mass deportations. And perhaps no industry relies on undocumented workers more than the food and agriculture industries. “The only question is how high prices will go.”Zandi noted that food prices could also be pushed higher by another element of the Trump agenda: Massive tariffs. The Trump transition team did not respond to a request for comment about how mass deportations would impact food prices. The current immigration system does not allow for green cards for farm workers.

Benny Tai, a prominent legal scholar and veteran protest leader, received the longest prison term of 10 years – the toughest sentence to date handed down under the national security law. But since the national security law came into effect in 2020, Hong Kong’s political and legal landscape has been transformed. The administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden was also critical of Bejing’s crackdown in Hong Kong, even as it tried to recalibrate ties with Beijing. John Burns, emeritus professor at the University of Hong Kong, said the cumulative changes have reduced the city’s autonomy and citizens’ participation in politics. “The new regime has restricted human rights in Hong Kong, rights that Hong Kongers used to enjoy.

CNN —“Impoundment” is another word that Americans may need to learn in the vernacular of President-elect Donald Trump’s second term. Trump took the time to record a video about impoundment during the Republican primary season, and he promised seizing control over spending from Congress would be a top priority if he was elected. Impoundment occurs when Congress appropriates money that the president then declines to spend. As a result of these standoffs, Congress passed a law to curtail a president’s use of impoundment, particularly for policy reasons. The Impoundment Control Act of 1974 did a lot more than that, however.

A defamation case against Kari Lake brought by Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer has been settled, representatives for both parties confirmed Sunday to NBC News. Richer, a Republican, filed a claim in June 2023 saying that Lake falsely accused him of "intentionally sabotaging the election" after she lost the 2022 Arizona governor's race. Richer sought nominal, compensatory and punitive damages in unspecified amounts. "We are pleased" the case has been settled, Lake’s lawyer Dennis Wilenchik said, noting that the settlement's terms "are confidential." Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday left the door open to adjourning Congress so President-elect Donald Trump can appoint his Cabinet nominees outside of the usual Senate confirmation process if necessary. Both chambers usually gavel in for pro forma sessions even during times of recess specifically to prevent the president from making recess appointments and bypassing congressional approval. President Barack Obama once tried to use recess appointments and was rebuked by the Supreme Court, which said in 2014 that recesses needed to be 10 days or longer for recess appointments to be legal. Johnson isn’t the only Trump ally who has left the door open to using a recess appointment to confirm Trump’s Cabinet picks. “I have literally not discussed one word about the ethics report, not once, and I’ve been with him quite a bit this week,” Johnson said.

Former Fox News host Pete Hegseth’s attorney on Sunday confirmed to NBC News that Hegseth, whom President-elect Donald Trump has named as his candidate for defense secretary, paid a woman an undisclosed amount after she accused him of sexual assault. “In 2023, Hegseth paid the complainant as part of a civil confidential settlement agreement and maintains his innocence,” Timothy Parlatore, Hegseth’s attorney, said in a statement. He also denied that the encounter between Hegseth and an unnamed woman, which she alleges happened in 2017, was sexual assault. And by the way, I do believe that President Trump has the ability to pick some really, really good people. We've seen what they've done to President Trump, we've seen the attacks that they continue to go after him with. That's - that’s being taken completely out of context. And President Trump hasn't been the one that weaponized the DOJ to go after his political enemies. I think that's a pretty controversial pick, from whatever pronoun that he or he - he or she decides to use.

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the job application process, simplifying some aspects — and creating new potential frictions in others. As the use of AI in hiring and applying increases, many job seekers are having to go to extra lengths to stand out. Using the tools, job seekers can save hundreds of hours — and apply to up to thousands of jobs a day, according to the services. A premium membership starts at $38 a month, according to the website — a cost AI Apply notes is much lower and more accessible than the cost of a career counselor. But job seekers are not the only party using AI in the application process, according to a recent University of Washington study.

Crypto super PACs spent heavily on Republicans as well as key Democrats, including two who won open seats in the US Senate, Elissa Slotkin in Michigan and Ruben Gallego in Arizona. How Washington regulates the industry has enormous consequences for this burgeoning sector, along with the 52 million Americans who now hold digital assets. “The strategy is to have as many conversations with as many people in the Trump orbit as possible so that everyone has an understanding of what the crypto industry is most interested in,” she said. They also helped finance Fairshake, a crypto industry super PAC launched last year that was active in congressional contests. House Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday that House Ethics Committee's probe into Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for U.S. attorney general, is a "Pandora's box" and said the report from it should not be released. The House Ethics Committee was investigating allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct, illicit drug use and other wrongdoing. I don't think we want the House Ethics Committee using all of its vast resources and powers to go after private citizens, and that's what Matt Gaetz is now," Johnson said.
