In conversations with nearly a dozen Democratic lawmakers and candidates running in competitive races across the country, a common theme emerged. Tim Walz, Democrats have felt a tangible bump of energy in their districts, through spikes in volunteers, donations and event turnout. Rep. Chris Deluzio, who supports Harris, told CNN he was glad to see that she has moved away from her previous position on fracking. The Republican campaign arm has seized on some of her past positions from his first presidential run, including fracking, as they’ve attempted to develop a strategy to target Democrats in tough races. Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance on Sunday defended his 2021 comments about allocating more votes to people with children, saying they were a “thought experiment.”In a widely circulated video clip from a 2021 speech he gave to a conservative organization called the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, Vance suggested giving more votes to people with children than to people who have none. “Let’s give votes to all children in this country, but let’s give control over those votes to the parents of those children,” Vance said in his 2021 speech. “And I said, well, if we’re going to give the rights to the children, then we should actually just allow the parents to cast those votes. She said her husband’s “quip” was an effort to bring attention to U.S. policies that fall short of providing the support families need. What is it about our leadership and the way that they think about the world that makes it so hard sometimes for parents?’” she added.

“Tim Walz gave his wife a nice, firm Midwestern handshake, and then tried to sort of awkwardly correct for it,” Vance said. Vance said “of course” he acknowledges the families of Harris and Buttigieg, and argued his comments were taken out of context. The Ohio senator said Republicans’ goal is to contrast the policies Trump stood for during his term in office with those of the Biden-Harris administration. “I think all President Trump was saying was that look, it’s kind of weird that you have so many bureaucrats making so many important decisions. “And I think that’s what President Trump was getting at.

In three interviews broadcast on Sunday morning, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, repeated his description of Democrats as “anti-family,” defended former President Donald J. Trump’s abortion policies and suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris was racist. He added that the idea of giving children the right to vote but letting their parents have control of the votes, which he floated in 2021, had been a “thought experiment” that he hadn’t really meant. “I want us to have more families. And obviously sometimes it doesn’t work out, sometimes for medical reasons, sometimes because you don’t meet the right person. But the point is that our country has become anti-family in its public policy.”He told ABC News of the idea of giving parents more votes through their children, “If it was a policy proposal, I would have made the policy proposal in my two years in the United States Senate.”

Kamala Harris has a very different theory of this election than Joe Biden did. In 2020, and then again in 2024, Biden ceded the battle for attention to Donald Trump. Trump wanted the election to be about Donald Trump, and Joe Biden wanted the election to be about Donald Trump. In 2020, when Trump was the unpopular incumbent, that strategy worked for Biden. Harris has been able to do what Biden could or would not: fight — and win — the battle for attention.

Webb, Harris and more than 33 million other multiracial Americans are, by some measures, part of the nation’s fastest growing demographic group. And for many of them, former President Donald Trump’s repeated attacks on Harris’ identity feel particularly personal. I don’t say I’m a Black woman. When President Biden campaigned in Michigan last month, Representative Elissa Slotkin, the Democrats’ nominee for the state’s open Senate seat, was nowhere to be found. But on Wednesday night, just weeks after that no-show, Ms. Slotkin announced her full-throated support for her party’s new presidential ticket at a Detroit rally. Tim Walz of Minnesota, Ms. Slotkin concluded her speech by delivering her final punch at the Republicans’ vice-presidential nominee, Senator JD Vance of Ohio. Ms. Slotkin is not alone in recognizing the new political landscape since Mr. Biden decided to end his re-election bid. The new energy and rapid coalescing of Democrats behind Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz have drastically changed the strategies of both Democrats and Republicans alike in down-ballot races.

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign on Saturday said that it had been hacked by an Iranian group in June, “which coincides with the close timing of President Trump’s selection of a Vice Presidential nominee,” Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign, told NBC News. The hack was first reported by Politico and NBC News has not independently verified that the hack took place or where it originated. Politico said that it began receiving emails from an anonymous account sharing internal documents from the Trump campaign in July. The documents included research papers on at least two of the contenders to be Trump’s running mate, including the eventual GOP vice presidential nominee: Ohio Sen. JD Vance. “The Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House.

In the 1980s, the U.S. military was in the middle of a transformation. Mr. Walz, now Minnesota governor and the presumptive Democratic candidate for vice president, raised his hand to join the Army National Guard just two days past his 17th birthday on April 8, 1981. Mr. Walz never went to war. And it ended when Mr. Walz was 41, as the military ramped up for war after Sept. 11. Since being picked as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate this week, he has found himself facing allegations previously aired by Minnesota Republicans and newly amplified by JD Vance, former President Donald J. Trump’s running mate.

The poll found Harris beating Trump 50% to 46% among likely voters in all three states, though those leads are within the survey's margins of error. Likely voters are a subset of the entire pool of registered voters surveyed. From Monday to Thursday, the poll surveyed 619 registered voters in Michigan and 661 registered voters in Wisconsin. Trump has a nine-point lead with voters on his handling of the economy compared to Harris, according to the Times/Siena poll. The Times/Siena poll found Walz had a 36% favorability rating among registered voters, the same as Trump's running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance.

Democratic vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (L), and Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH). Child tax creditMinnesota's new child tax credit is unusual in its narrowness, but it is the most generous in the nation for low-income households. However, a permanent federal child tax credit expansion could be difficult, particularly amid a divided Congress and increasing concerns over the federal budget deficit. Despite the failed procedural vote, Crapo voiced openness to negotiating a "child tax credit solution that a majority of Republicans can support." Vance was not present for the Senate vote, but has expressed support for the child tax credit.

What’s So New About the ‘New Right’?
  + stars: | 2024-08-10 | by ( Clay Risen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Over the last few years, a loose coalition of conservative thinkers, journalists, publications and think tanks have emerged under the banner of the New Right. With Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, as its flag-bearer, this still-disparate group has been hailed as the intellectual heft behind the MAGA movement, and even as the future of American conservatism. Its very name declares a radical break with the Republican past — “very nascent, very bleeding edge,” is how Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate, described it. But how new is the New Right? Still, there are some unifying features.

Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate, his military history seemed like an asset. About two months later, after his retirement, his unit, the Minnesota National Guard's 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery, was ordered to mobilize. In 1996, he transferred to the Minnesota National Guard and held various field artillery positions, including firing battery chief, operations sergeant, first sergeant, and command sergeant major. A month later, in March 2005, the National Guard announced the potential partial mobilization of troops from the Minnesota National Guard. To retire as a command sergeant major, Walz would also have had to hold the title for three years.

The now-viral video cuts between Walz, holding his phone on a chair, and Harris, sitting in an office. Moreover, it's an aesthetic that could squarely appeal to the very voters Harris needs, experts told Business Insider. "Tim Walz is one of the few politicians who looks good in casual wear and also looks natural in it," Guy told Business Insider. Tom Williams"When he does the folksy thing, he's actually at the upper bound of folksy, and when he's in a suit he's in the lower bound of suit," Higonnet said. A perfect foil to Harris' polishThe Harris campaign is counting on Walz to court voters associated with the clothing he wears, particularly those hailing from the Blue Wall states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania.
