CNN Business —The big news in crypto this week came via a court filing in Texas. FTX, the crypto giant that is led by arguably the most powerful person in the industry, is under investigation by Texas regulators for selling unregistered securities. FDIC, OCC, SEC, DOL, FBI, US Treasury and IRS have all stepped up their crypto enforcement efforts. The crypto lawyer I spoke with told me that those who prefer the CFTC over the SEC fall into two camps. I interviewed Saylor last year for CNN’s crypto interactive (“The Bitcoin Billionaire” is what we dubbed him).

Advocacy groups AFT and SBPC sent a cease and desist letter to student-loan company MOHELA. "Student loan giant MOHELA has grown fat on federal contracts and back-room deals with big banks. The groups also noted that MOHELA's actions could be a "potential liability" under the California Student Borrower Bill of Rights and the Consumer Financial Protection Act. The cease and desist letter noted that seeking to block debt relief and understaffing call centers could constitute such behavior. "People with student debt in California and across the country have a right to life-changing debt relief and we will not let a rogue student loan company stand in the way."

More than half of principals said their schools were understaffed at the start of the current school year, according to a survey published Tuesday in the Education Department’s first national examination of the school staffing problem since the pandemic began. The National Center for Education Statistics survey of 904 principals conducted in August found that 53% of principals felt their schools were short workers, with 60% saying they were unable to fill nonteaching positions and 48% unable to fill teaching positions.

Most are operated by GEO Group and rival CoreCivic Inc (CXW.N), but dozens are owned by smaller companies. GEO Group and the U.S. Department of Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Immigrant advocates have said private facilities often are overcrowded and understaffed, subjecting detainees to inhumane conditions. While campaigning for the 2020 election, Biden said he wanted to end the use of private detention centers to house immigrants. California's law prohibits the operation of any private detention facilities in the state, including prisons, but the lawsuits only challenged the ban on immigrant detention centers.
