CNN Business —The big news in crypto this week came via a court filing in Texas. FTX, the crypto giant that is led by arguably the most powerful person in the industry, is under investigation by Texas regulators for selling unregistered securities. FDIC, OCC, SEC, DOL, FBI, US Treasury and IRS have all stepped up their crypto enforcement efforts. The crypto lawyer I spoke with told me that those who prefer the CFTC over the SEC fall into two camps. I interviewed Saylor last year for CNN’s crypto interactive (“The Bitcoin Billionaire” is what we dubbed him).
Advocacy groups AFT and SBPC sent a cease and desist letter to student-loan company MOHELA. "Student loan giant MOHELA has grown fat on federal contracts and back-room deals with big banks. The groups also noted that MOHELA's actions could be a "potential liability" under the California Student Borrower Bill of Rights and the Consumer Financial Protection Act. The cease and desist letter noted that seeking to block debt relief and understaffing call centers could constitute such behavior. "People with student debt in California and across the country have a right to life-changing debt relief and we will not let a rogue student loan company stand in the way."
But some physicians and patient advocates say the health care investments of private-equity firms and their drive to reap relatively short-term profits are inconsistent with putting patients first. Independent academic studies find that private equity’s laser focus on profits in health care operations can result in lower staffing levels at hospitals and nursing homes. Neither the FTC nor U.S. Anesthesia Partners responded to voice mails seeking comment; a spokesman for U.S. Anesthesia Partners confirmed the inquiry to the Journal, saying it is cooperating. NBC News asked both of NAPA’s private-equity owners about the disputes involving the company and the research showing higher costs associated with private-equity ownership of anesthesiology practices. Covid was sweeping the country and Moses Taylor was doing its best to respond to the health care crisis, according to its lawsuit.
Reffkin (left) and Compass cofounder Ori Allon. Tech had been central to Compass' original missionFor years, Compass executives, including Reffkin, credited the company's tech with its meteoric rise in the residential-real-estate business. Though Compass' tech team still has 700 people, many more than any rival brokerage, the September layoffs seemed to initiate what insiders expect to be continuing cuts to the unit. "Robert is like Steve Jobs but without the insight," the veteran engineer who left Compass earlier this year said. Reffkin (left) and Allon ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
More than half of principals said their schools were understaffed at the start of the current school year, according to a survey published Tuesday in the Education Department’s first national examination of the school staffing problem since the pandemic began. The National Center for Education Statistics survey of 904 principals conducted in August found that 53% of principals felt their schools were short workers, with 60% saying they were unable to fill nonteaching positions and 48% unable to fill teaching positions.
Most are operated by GEO Group and rival CoreCivic Inc (CXW.N), but dozens are owned by smaller companies. GEO Group and the U.S. Department of Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Immigrant advocates have said private facilities often are overcrowded and understaffed, subjecting detainees to inhumane conditions. While campaigning for the 2020 election, Biden said he wanted to end the use of private detention centers to house immigrants. California's law prohibits the operation of any private detention facilities in the state, including prisons, but the lawsuits only challenged the ban on immigrant detention centers.

After mostly defending for months, Ukraine is now dictating the war, choosing where it wants to press new offensives. After mostly defending for months, Ukraine is now dictating the war, choosing where it wants to press new offensives. But even if it helps, the “partial mobilization” could take months to change the battlefield, giving Ukraine time to push forward. Now that Ukraine has recaptured Izium, Ukrainian forces are freed up to attack Russian forces to the east. That has led to sharp rises in prices for new and used cars — if there are any left on the lot — and to scalpers snatching’ up the latest video game consoles to resell at inflated prices. Many industries, including oil refineries, car factories and airlines, cut staff and production in 2020 at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving them understaffed when demand for travel roared back. Gas prices only started falling in the summer, after a prolonged rise at the start of the year. And rising natural gas prices have led to spikes in the cost of electricity, sending energy bills soaring in some cities. The federal government has taken steps to combat rising prices.
MINNEAPOLIS — Thousands of nurses in Minnesota launched a three-day strike Monday, complaining of low salaries and understaffing worsened by the strains of the coronavirus pandemic. Minnesota Nurses Association president Mary Turner said pay raises are necessary to address the “crisis of retention” that would otherwise leave the hospitals severely understaffed. Nurses picket Monday outside North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn. David Joles / Star Tribune via APThe hospitals have offered 10-12% wage increases but the nurses are seeking more than 30%. The hospitals affected by the strike included those operated by Allina Health, M Health Fairview, Children’s Hospital, North Memorial and HealthPartners. The Minnesota nurses’ strike comes amid an upsurge in union activity nationwide.
One housekeeper uses TikTok to show how much laundry she must fold in an 8-plus hour shift. Zeiber's TikTok videos showing what she calls "deadly drops" from a linen chute into the hotel's laundry room, have gone viral, shocking viewers. In the comments section of her account, Zeiber clarified that she is not the only housekeeper at the hotel, but she's the only person responsible for laundry. Sometimes her workdays last beyond eight hours and include more than just laundry, according to Zeiber. Kasea Zeiber is the only housekeeper responsible for folding laundry in an 126-room hotel in the Pittsburgh area.
candidates before him, he appealed to a kind of economy of justice: that spending less time on minor crimes, and on things that shouldn’t be crimes, would give prosecutors more time and resources to tackle violent crime. Reflecting on his first 17 months in office, Williams made sure to mention a slew of recent convictions in nearly the same breath as his efforts toward reform. He recognizes that violent crime is up, and that his office is responsible for addressing it. Williams’ office argued Mitchell had been unfairly denied a chance at parole. The Metropolitan Crime Commission, a nonprofit that publishes weekly city crime data and has been critical of Williams, found that in 2021, 74% of violent felony cases were resolved this way.
Sam Madden, 23, has worked as a nanny, waitress, and bartender in Nantucket and Aspen for six years. I had some money saved to pay for rent because I'd worked at McDonald's and Olive Garden throughout high school. In the main house, there were a bunch of college guys and girls who all worked at the Nantucket Yacht Club, and I thought that their summer looked like so much fun. My manager saw that I had bartending on my résumé from the yacht club and asked if I wanted to start bartending. She lived with a manager of a restaurant called Cru, which is kind of the "It" restaurant on the island.
