But its more serious problems – ongoing massive losses, quality and safety problems – are as bad as ever, and could even get worse. Renewed problems in ChinaAmong the most serious problems Boeing faces is President-elect Donald Trump’s promise to impose large tariffs on imports from China. “There needs to be a full accounting for everything they do.”Need for new planesAnd there’s yet more mess Boeing needs to sort out. Ortberg told investors last month that Boeing needs to reduce its portfolio and repair its balance sheet so that Boeing has “a path to the next commercial aircraft.”The good news for Boeing is it is in little danger of going out of business, despite its many problems. And Airbus has a backlog of orders stretching back years, as does Boeing, so airline customers can not easily switch orders from one to the other.

Miller was a powerful White House aide in Trump’s first term, authoring much of his most fiery scripted rhetoric as a speechwriter. Yet despite these draconian visions, there’s uncertainty about how far Trump will go in his deportation program and whether it matches his dystopian speeches. Many Democrats and Republicans could agree on Trump’s vow to start by deporting criminal undocumented migrants — the easiest part of his plan. Trump’s critics and vulnerable undocumented migrants, however, will find little in the president-elect’s new staff picks to offer them comfort. In every incoming presidential administration, staffing is important and provides ideological clues to how a White House will act.

CNN —The Cleveland Cavaliers became just the eighth team in NBA history to start a season 12-0 after earning a hard fought 119-113 win over the Chicago Bulls on Monday night. The Bulls managed to tie the scores at 106-106, but Cleveland outscored its opponent down the stretch to cement its place in an exclusive NBA group. It’s the best start to an NBA season since the record-breaking 2015-16 Golden State Warriors, who set league records with a 24-0 start and a 73-9 campaign. Five of the last seven teams to start the season 12-0 have gone on to reach the NBA Finals, according to ESPN. The Cavaliers’ 9-0 start to the season was already the best in franchise history.

SEOUL, South Korea — As foreign governments prepare to deal with a second Trump administration, at least one key U.S. ally is hoping to make headway on the fairway. Last month, the U.S. and South Korea agreed on a new five-year cost-sharing plan for the U.S. troops. Maintaining a strong security alliance with the U.S. is especially important for South Korea given the growing hostility from nuclear-armed North Korea. That in turn could lead South Korea and even Japan to consider whether they need nuclear weapons of their own. Stella Kim reported from Seoul, South Korea, and Jennifer Jett reported from Hong Kong.

A U-turn on US climate policy could be disastrous for the planet, as it raises the risk of emulation. When America does something on the world stage, at least some countries tend to follow. Ahead of Trump’s inauguration, negotiators will ramp down their expectations in terms of what’s possible at the talks, he said. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who will host the climate talks next year in Brazil, bowed out after a head injury. The world is already 1.3 degrees warmer than it was before humans started burning fossil fuels at an industrial scale.

But as overall monthly overnight stays in Portugal reached an all time high in August, some Lisbon residents are becoming frustrated by the impact of ballooning tourism on local quality of life. Following protests in September about the city’s housing market, thousands of people living in the Portuguese capital have signed a petition demanding a clampdown on Lisbon vacation rentals. The group behind the petition, the Referendum Movement for Housing (MRH), is seeking to eradicate the almost 20,000 short term vacation rentals in Lisbon residential blocks, hoping to free up housing opportunities for locals. CNN Travel has reached out to Airbnb for comment about the Lisbon referendum petition. Changing the Lisbon tourist industryFreitas stresses a successful referendum wouldn’t eliminate Lisbon tourist lets altogether, but prevent them from “existing in houses registered for residential use.” Landlords would also be prohibited from establishing new vacation rentals in residential buildings in the future.

CNN —Given his rhetoric demonizing undocumented immigrants and his promise to engage in mass deportations when he returns to the White House in January, it’s kind of shocking that deportations actually dropped in the four years Donald Trump was president. Appearing Monday on Fox News, Homan said Trump 2.0 will be like his first term but with more deportations. During his first term, Trump also promised mass deportations. But that’s about half the 2.9 million deportations undertaken during Barack Obama’s first term and fewer than the 1.9 million deportations during Obama’s second term. It’s on par with Biden’s 1.49 million deportations, according to updated calculations Bush-Joseph shared with me.

Their findings, set out in a study published last month, suggest it’s a mix of human-caused climate change and the region’s unusual geology. Graphic shows the process by which warming temperatures and the region's unique geography can lead to explosive craters, according to new research. Vladimir Pushkare/Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration/AFP/Getty ImagesWhat most scientists do agree on, however, is that climate change is playing a role, and may lead to an increase in these explosive craters in the future. As climate change accelerates, he added, it may lead to more permafrost degradation, powerful gas blowouts and new craters. Not only are the craters affected by climate change, they also contribute to it.

In an instant, the impacts of her state’s restrictive laws on abortion care became clear: Had Bell been bleeding from a car accident or a burst appendix, doctors could help her right away. But because she was having a miscarriage in a hospital in Georgia, surgery had to wait. Several others restrict it to certain points in pregnancy, including Georgia, which limits abortion to the first six weeks of pregnancy. Bell’s pregnancy was at 18 weeks — too early for her fetus to survive outside the womb but well past Georgia’s limit. The second branch of the Taurid meteor showers, the Northern Taurid event, is about to take center stage. The Northern Taurids have been active since mid-October, but the shower will peak Monday night into Tuesday — with optimal visibility likely occurring after midnight — offering patient sky-gazers the best opportunity to view meteor activity, according to NASA. However, the moon will be about 79% full when the Northern Taurids peak this week, according to the American Meteor Society, which could make spotting meteors earlier in the evening more challenging. The Northern Taurids are visible until December 2, according to the American Meteor Society, so there is potential to spot more fireballs over the next few weeks. Here are peak dates for upcoming meteor showers, according to the American Meteor Society:Leonids: November 16-17Geminids: December 12-13Ursids: December 21-22Two full moons also remain — the beaver moon, which is a supermoon, on November 15 and the cold moon on December 15, according to the Farmers’ Almanac.

Washington CNN —The Israeli government has failed to meet criteria set out by the US to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, a group of eight humanitarian aid organizations said in a joint “scorecard” released Tuesday. “Israel not only failed to meet the U.S. criteria that would indicate support to the humanitarian response, but concurrently took actions that dramatically worsened the situation on the ground, particularly in northern Gaza,” the organizations said. Section 620i of the US Foreign Assistance Act requires the US to halt security assistance to governments who restrict US humanitarian aid. “Israeli forces repeatedly attacked humanitarian sites and frontline responders during the 30-day period,” the scorecard said. The humanitarian scorecard noted that “the effectiveness of international diplomatic efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza hinges on the willingness of the United States and other countries to push Israel to comply with these priorities.”

For some who’ve run afoul of Trump, the election results have sparked fresh worries that he may enter office looking for retribution. During the campaign, Trump has made different statements about whether he might target people who’ve upset him. Rep. But all we’re saying is, ‘preserve everything,’ so we, the Congress, who have a constitutional duty to do oversight, can see everything,” Jordan added. Asked specifically multiple times whether Jordan would call on Smith to testify, Jordan repeatedly dodged the question, saying simply, “Maybe that’s been the norm, but we’re not taking anything off the table. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on Sunday defended keeping Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the Supreme Court, after some Democrats have reportedly considered pressuring her to step down while President Joe Biden is still in office. He added that he’s heard “a little bit” of talk from Democratic senators about asking Sotomayor, who is serving a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, to step aside. Sonia Sotomayor, who is 70, is serving a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. If Sotomayor were to die during Trump’s term, she would likely be replaced by a conservative justice, pushing the now 6-3 conservative court further to the right. She died in September 2020 and Trump, then serving his first term, appointed the conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett to replace her, leading to the court’s current conservative makeup.
