Still dreaming Correa has sights set on Formula One
  + stars: | 2023-06-29 | by ( Steve Keating | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
[1/4] Formula One F1 - Belgian Grand Prix - Spa-Francorchamps, Spa, Belgium - August 27, 2020 Juan Manuel Correa visits the place where he was injured in an accident in a Formula 2 race last year that also killed Anthoine Hubert. "Before the accident I sort of felt if I didn't make it to F1 my life would be ruined," Correa told Reuters in a phone interview. In what has been a career reboot, Correa said the focus needed to get back on the track had made him stronger mentally. There is no looking into the rear view mirrors for Correa, only what is ahead and he sees a path to Formula One. But I am convinced I have what it takes to succeed in Formula One.

“It has been an open secret among the Motown family, the tragedy of Cindy,” Herman said in an interview. Lander considered but did not agree to an interview, and stopped responding to inquiries. With her gentle manner and polished skills, she was well suited for a daunting role: keeping one of Motown’s premier acts on track. “Cindy had a strong voice and charisma,” Gerald Posner, a Motown historian, said in an interview. “She’s the one who had to make the change look seamless — and she did.”

REUTERS/Stringer/File PhotoSummary Fears of civil war rose in world's biggest nuclear powerMercenaries posed biggest threat to Putin in 23-year rule'Anyone with anything to lose was extremely tense' -sourceThe elite wonder: What's next for Russia? One fear was that Yevgeny Prigozhin's Wagner mercenary group, if he entered Moscow, would try to take over the economy, triggering yet another redistribution of ownership in Russia, the world's biggest supplier of natural resources. The source spoke on condition of anonymity due to the danger of speaking publicly in contemporary Russia. Russians started to withdraw significant amounts of roubles and seek foreign currency in 15 regions across Russia. But within the elite, there is now a fear that Putin will seek to assert his position and remove those he felt did not profess their loyalty with enough ardour.

Some billionaires rocketed into space as Branson and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have. Other rich travelers journeyed on a submersible to explore the wreckage of the ocean liner Titanic. For $250,000 to $300,000 a trip, Kent sometimes fields unusual requests including helping a Saudi prince fulfill his dream of flying a plane onto and off of an aircraft carrier. The experience was so demanding that Ackman's father expressed concern about the intended trip, not for his son but for another fund manager who had signed up to go. One person familiar with that excursion said it probably wouldn't happen again, in part because it was such a potentially risky undertaking.

Yevgeny Prigozhin: What is happening to Wagner boss?
  + stars: | 2023-06-23 | by ( Cnn Staff | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Yevgeny Prigozhin, the bombastic chief of Russia’s private mercenary group Wagner, appears to be falling out of favor fast in Moscow, after he unleashed a tirade against the Russian military on Friday and vowed to retaliate against its leaders. Prigozhin on Friday accused Russia’s military of attacking a Wagner camp and killing a “huge amount” of his men. Prigozhin founded Wagner to be a shadowy mercenary outfit that fought both in eastern Ukraine and, increasingly, for Russian-backed causes around the world. While many regular Russian troops saw setbacks on the battlefield, Wagner fighters seemed to be the only ones capable of delivering tangible progress. In one particularly grim video from early May, Prigozhin stood next to a pile of dead Wagner fighters and took aim specifically at Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of the Russian armed forces Gen. Valery Gerasimov.

Where can a Chinese buyer purchase top-end Nvidia (NVDA.O) AI chips in the wake of U.S. sanctions? A model similar to OpenAI's GPT would require more than 30,000 Nvidia A100 cards, according to research firm TrendForce. Nvidia's more advanced H100 chips, only on the market since March, appear much harder to come by. He added the premiums currently commanded by Chinese vendors for A100 and H100 chips could collapse in the future as many of the Chinese AI startups that were driving purchases would eventually withdraw from the market. Tiny tech bank defies US massacre of the minnows

One example is $1 billion Live Oak Bancshares (LOB.N), which flouts many preconceptions about what it means to be a tiny U.S. bank. But if those failures demonstrated that rapid growth brings escalating risk, Live Oak is a counterexample. Because of the way that programme is structured, around 40% of Live Oak’s lending carries a government guarantee. The company spun out its cloud-based banking software division nCino (NCNO.O) in 2014; that firm is now worth $2.8 billion, more than twice Live Oak’s value. That more earthly valuation might reflect Live Oak’s biggest risk: that it starts to look more like the rest of the pack.

Ticket prices surged following reports early on Wednesday that he planned to join the Major League Soccer side, which he later confirmed. Messi's first game with the team could be on July 21 when Inter Miami host Cruz Azul in their Leagues Cup opener in Fort Lauderdale. Messi's first game in a Miami jersey will likely be the most expensive MLS game on record, Kyle Zorn, brand manager at TickPick, told Reuters. "We saw an almost instantaneous jump in Inter Miami ticket prices when the word got out that Messi was leaning towards joining the club," Zorn said. "Given his status as arguably the greatest player in the world, every time Inter Miami plays on the road, we’re going to see record breaking ticket prices."

Club name and Dow stock Caterpillar (CAT) was one of the leaders, soaring more than 8% and accounting for over 100 points of the 30-stock average's 700-point surge. Meanwhile, the tech darlings that have recently propelled the market higher — including top-performing Club stocks Nvidia (NVDA) and Meta Platforms (META) — took a relative backseat Friday. For that reason, it's a hopeful sign to see other sectors walk the runway in the Wall Street fashion show Friday. The crypto market leader finished May down 7.9%, according to Coin Metrics, while ether posted a 2% loss. Absent other clear catalysts – such as the U.S. regional bank crisis whose start and end coincided with the crypto rally – price movements in June will probably be determined yet again by inflation, monetary policy and regulatory updates. "Crypto investors will probably follow the economy for clues on where prices go next," said Callie Cox, an analyst at the investment company eToro. "Bitcoin and ether are likely to gather assets from the more speculative crypto currencies that investors have abandoned since the various scandals," she added. Prices, like growth stock valuations, have come down and made the asset more digestible, and interesting, particularly for institutional investors.

The jump in S&P 500's big tech stocks is masking concerns among investors that the US is already in recession, BlackRock Investment Institute says. The US has logged back-to-back quarters of contraction in gross domestic income. The S&P 500 has tacked on about 9% this year. Last week, the government said gross domestic income declined 2.3% in the first quarter of 2023 on a seasonally adjusted annual basis. Its aggressive series of hikes last year contributed to driving the S&P 500 down more than 18% last year.

Nvidia is on track to hit a $1 trillion market cap Tuesday, after pre-market trading propelled shares to $409 and signaled Nvidia's imminent entrance into a small club of mostly technology companies. Nvidia's shares must hold above $404.86 to maintain that distinction. The chipmaker's shares rocketed last week, after posting quarterly earnings with top- and bottom-line numbers that significantly beat consensus estimates. Significantly, Nvidia forecasted $11 billion in sales for the second quarter of 2024 alone. By contrast, Intel, which struggled with inventory issues and development challenges, has been historically focused on the chip market for central processing units, or CPUs.

The sale – for 125 million dirhams (AED) – marks a whopping 242% gain over his original purchase price of 36.5 million AED, or just under $10 million, in 2021. Jumeirah Bay Island is also home to plenty of sandy beaches and a marina for dozens of yachts, high-end restaurants, a gym and a spa center. Jumeirah Bay Island, on the other hand, is much smaller at just 0.22 square miles, and is considered more exclusive. Current listings show an empty plot for sale on Jumeirah Bay Island for 90 million AED, or about $24.5 million. A three-bedroom, four-bathroom apartment in the Bulgari complex on the island is being offered for 60 million AED, or about $16.3 million.
The app quickly rocketed up to the top of the iOS App Store charts. Last week, OpenAI launched an iPhone app for ChatGPT that quickly shot to the top of the App Store. And yet, it will likely make hundreds of millions of dollars a year from this technology, while basically doing nothing. None of that is stopping Apple from offering the service to users through its App Store and reaping a profit on subscription sales. OpenAI is not doing that, perhaps because the process is a bit more clunky than using Apple's built-in payment processor.
[1/4] Rapper Kanye West talks on the phone before attending the Versace presentation in New York, U.S. December 2, 2018. Adidas cut ties with West, who goes by Ye, in October after he made a string of antisemitic comments in interviews and on social media. The German sportswear maker was left with Yeezy shoes worth 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion). The value of Yeezy shoes in the resale market has rocketed since then, with some models more than doubling in price. Adidas said there could be further releases of Yeezy stock but no decisions have been made on timing.

REUTERS/Allison JoyceFRANKFURT, May 19 (Reuters) - Adidas will start selling some of the shoes from its defunct Yeezy partnership with rapper Kanye West at the end of May, the company said on Friday, and plans to donate the proceeds to selected organisations combating racism and hate. The news fleshes out plans initially outlined last week and follows Adidas' move to cut ties with West over anti-Semitic comments made last year, leaving the German sporting goods maker with Yeezy brand shoes worth 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion). The initial sale of some of the shoes marks the first time the products have been available to customers since Adidas (ADSGn.DE) terminated the partnership in October 2022. Among others, planned recipients of the proceeds include the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Philonise & Keeta Floyd Institute for Social Change, Adidas said.
Japan's Nikkei powers to 1990 'bubble' era high

TOKYO, May 19 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei share average rallied on Friday to the highest since August 1990, the country's so-called "bubble" era, driven by a confluence of positive factors from strong earnings to optimism over a U.S. debt ceiling deal. The broader Topix (.TOPX), which had reached the post-bubble milestone on Tuesday, extended its climb to as high as 2,171.37. Foreign buying thanks to increased investment by Warren Buffett and a push for better corporate governance by the Tokyo Stock Exchange also provided some impetus. The Nikkei had rocketed 6.2% from the May 10 close - when sweeping rally began - to reach Friday's high. "Investors are going to spend today thinking hard about whether this Nikkei rally will continue," said Kazuo Kamitami, an equity strategist at Nomura Securities.
The company’s latest salvo in the back-and-forth with DeSantis came Thursday, when it pulled the plug on its Lake Nona office complex. For Team Disney, the move is just the latest in which the company is relentlessly dunking on a relatively inexperienced politician who picked a fight with the wrong conglomerate. If you’re on Team DeSantis, shutting down Lake Nona reflects the desperation of a company whose stock is tanking and whose core businesses face serious headwinds. But Disney’s financial problems have much more to do with its money-guzzling streaming business and its rapidly dwindling profit from traditional cable TV. Disney’s stock is down more than 5% this year, while the S&P 500 is up 2%.
