DUBAI/CAIRO, June 17 (Reuters) - Air strikes killed civilians and pummeled multiple parts of the Sudanese capital on Saturday, residents said, as mediators pushed the warring factions towards a new ceasefire. Fighting between the Sudanese army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces is entering its third month with neither side gaining a clear advantage. On Friday and Saturday the army appeared to ramp up air strikes, hitting several residential neighborhoods. Air strikes in central and southern Omdurman continued from Friday into Saturday, impacting homes and killing one person, according to the local committee in the Beit al-Mal neighborhood. Residents said three members of a family were killed in the Sharq el-Nil district after an air strike on Friday.

Popeyes is expanding its menu to add a Blackened Chicken Sandwich and bacon and cheese toppings for its chicken sandwiches. Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is permanently adding a Blackened Chicken Sandwich to its menu Tuesday, marking the first addition to its chicken sandwich line since it kicked off the craze four years ago. The new menu item features a chicken breast that's been marinated for 12 hours and seasoned with Cajun spices, but it lacks the breading of the chain's existing chicken sandwich. Popeyes President Sami Siddiqui said in a statement that the Blackened Chicken Sandwich gives diners "a lighter option that is perfect for everyday." The chicken sandwich returned permanently several months later, driving double-digit same-store sales growth for Popeyes for multiple quarters.

CNN —It wasn’t too long ago that Coco Gauff exploded onto the scene as a 15-year-old, defeating Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2019. Andreeva won the first set against Gauff. Christophe Ena/APDespite her age, Gauff has already played in numerous French Open tournaments and reached the final last year. Armed with that experience, she reset, shored up her second serve, and harnessed her powerful backhand to ultimately outmaneuver Andreeva. 4 Elena Rybakina withdrew from the French Open citing an upper respiratory illness.

Thousands of people across the island of Guam remained without power, water and cellphone service on Friday, more than a week after the U.S. territory was pummeled by the strongest typhoon in at least two decades, which flooded homes, downed coconut and mango trees, and disrupted basic services. “Losing water has been the hardest part,” said Melinda Sanchez, 50, whose family lives in central Guam. “We just go back to what we’ve learned to do during these times. We get through it.”The typhoon, Mawar, brought widespread flooding and 140 mile-per-hour winds, equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane, when it struck the island of 150,000 people in the South Pacific on May 24, knocking out power across much of the territory. Now a tropical storm, Mawar forced the evacuation of 1.2 million people as it approached Japan on Friday.

Since New Year’s, storm after storm had pummeled the state, dropping epic quantities of water and snow. Houses and farms and dairies flooded, and people were using excavators to hastily build earthen dikes around their properties. In a valley where powerful interests had long jockeyed for access to water, the arguments were now about who would bear the flood. A froth of brown storm water started to spread toward the houses. Had someone intentionally cut the levee, jeopardizing Allensworth, not to mention someone else’s farm, to save his own?

Republican gubernatorial candidate for Florida Ron DeSantis with his wife Casey DeSantis speaks to supporters during an election night watch party at the Convention Center in Tampa, Florida, on November 8, 2022. Ron DeSantis announced the launch of his 2024 presidential campaign on Wednesday, setting the Republican contender on a collision course with former President Donald Trump in the race for the GOP nomination. Musk then started a new Twitter Spaces where DeSantis announced his presidential bid. Trump and his allies have assailed DeSantis' record, his political abilities and even his personality, while amplifying negative news about the governor. That result showed Trump extending his gains and DeSantis losing ground from a previous Quinnipiac survey in late March.

Are the travails of the bond market, like Macbeth expounds, a "tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing?" The billionaire class — so incorrectly sought after by the media — so often seems to use the bond market as a sort of intellectual cudgel. That's why I always start my discussion on bonds with the simple query of "where are the layoffs, not forget about stocks, think fixed income." Here the bond market polices only those companies that haven't pivoted to making a profit. They, among all sectors, could be pummeled by the bond market freeze and by the consumers' paralysis.
Cramer says he's looking to pounce on this beaten-up stock early next weekJim Cramer said Friday he wants to buy Estee Lauder (EL) shares as soon as Monday, after the cosmetics giant saw its stock pummeled in response to disappointing guidance. He also weighed in on the April jobs report and lingering market risks. A transcript will be added shortly.
LOS ANGELES, April 28 (Reuters) - Barely five weeks after the last bout of heavy rain and snow in California's historically wet winter, firefighters on Friday battled the state's first large wildfire of the year in rugged foothills east of Los Angeles. The blaze posed no immediate threat to populated areas as it burned steep terrain deep in the forest, agency spokesperson Lyn Sieliet said. Still, it marked the first blaze of the 2023 season measuring 100 acres or more, signaling the potential for extreme wildfire activity this summer and fall. Forecasters said a warming trend hastened a spring thaw following a spate of Pacific storms that pummeled California with torrential rains and mountain snow from late December until late March. Already this month, DeSantis has seen more fellow Florida Republicans back Trump instead of him. April was supposed to be the crescendo for the Florida governor before his widely expected presidential announcement. Instead, DeSantis has been pummeled on all sides, including by many of his fellow Florida Republicans. "Floridians want him focused on Florida," Rep. Greg Steube, yet another Florida Republican who endorsed Trump, told Politico, "which is the job they elected him to do." Last month, DeSantis began to punch back at Trump in a feisty Piers Morgan interview where he stressed that he was a "winner."
The peso hit 495 against the dollar on Tuesday in informal markets that have flourished as the official foreign exchange market is under tight controls. That is down from 400 pesos per dollar just over a week ago and compares to the official spot rate of around 221. The official peso, which is in a controlled, sliding peg to the dollar, has fallen 20% so far this year. The gap between the black and official rates of some 122% is the widest since July. Last week, Argentina's central bank raised its benchmark interest rate by 300 basis points to 81% after inflation soared past expectations in March to 7.7%, the fastest monthly increase in two decades.
Ukrainian forces reportedly cross a key river, raising hopes

Ukrainian military forces have successfully established positions on the eastern side of the Dnieper River, according to a new analysis, giving rise to speculation Sunday that the advances could be an early sign of Kyiv's long-awaited spring counteroffensive. In the south, the Dnieper has for months marked the contact line in the Kherson region, where its namesake capital is regularly pummeled by shelling from Russian forces stationed across the river. The think tank cited comments from financier Yevgeniy Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group — a private Russian military company whose fighters have spearheaded the offensive on Bakhmut. Russian forces on Saturday and overnight also dropped five guided aerial bombs over the Kherson region, Ukraine's Operational Command South said in a Facebook post Sunday. In the neighboring Zaporizhzhia region, Russian shelling wounded a 56-year-old man in Stepnohirsk, a town on the banks of the Dnieper river, local Gov.
"I never saw myself as a speaker, let alone a motivational speaker," Leonard tells me while his assistant irons his jeans. 'When I ramble," Hunter told me, "hit me in the leg!" Every plane had been grounded, including the one stuck on the tarmac with an increasingly inebriated Hunter Thompson trapped inside. But by far the most all-consuming task was booking gigs for Hunter Thompson. Just before a debate with G. Gordon Liddy at Brown University, Hunter demanded that Betsy Berg, whom I now worked alongside at GTN, score him some crystal meth.
Brisbane, Australia CNN —A massive cyclone swirling off Australia’s western coast will likely make landfall as a category 5 storm – the strongest on the national scale – according to the country’s official forecaster. “Communities in those coastal areas hopefully are already hunkered down, ready to ride this one out. The last major cyclone of this strength to hit the Western Australian coast was Cyclone George in 2007 with winds that reached 275 kph (170 mph). The strongest storm ever to hit any part of Australia was Cyclone Monica, which arrived in 2006 with sustained winds around 290 kph (180 mph), as it swept across the eastern and northern parts of Australia. That cyclone missed highly populated areas but brought down trees and caused severe damage to vegetation along with a storm surge up to six meters high.
On the night of December 5, the president of the Amazon Labor Union pummeled another union member. Some longtime Amazon Labor Union organizers decided to begin organizing on their own, without Smalls. All three said they believe in Smalls' mission and support the goals of the Amazon Labor Union, but worry about Smalls' ability to lead. Amazon Labor Union members consoled each other after the union lost the vote at its second warehouse, LDJ5, last April. One purpose of the organization appears to be to raise funds for the Amazon Labor Union, according to its certificate of incorporation.

I noted last week that following a strong first quarter (S & P up over 7%), the S & P 500 almost invariably is up even more by the end of the year. For the most part, the strategist community is fairly gloomy going into first quarter earnings season and the prospects for further gains in 2023. He too noted that the S & P 500 is now "within spitting distance" of his year-end price target of 4,200 and announced Tuesday he was shifting direction. Indeed, it looks like a race to the bottom to see who can claim the mantle of "lowest estimate on the Street" for full-year 2023 earnings. 2023 earnings: the trough is Q1 Q1: $50.63 Q2: $54.13 Q3: $56.84 Q4: $58.32 Source: Refinitiv That works out to $219.83, just a tad above the $218.09 that 2022 printed.
While the S&P 500 index (.SPX) has advanced 6% since mid-March, when the failure of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) sparked tumult in the banking sector, investors have been more wary of financial stocks. The S&P 500 Banks Group (.SPXBK) is up just 3% from its March low and remains down 14% for the year. The pervasive gloom around financial stocks has increased the cost for investors betting on more downside while making it relatively inexpensive to bet on a rebound. For investors who believe financial earnings and guidance will come in better than expected, Elevation Securities recommended buying Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF.P) call options at the 33 strike. "Given how beaten up bank stocks are, buying calls into earnings can make sense," said Michael Purves, chief executive officer at Tallbacken Capital Advisors.

Padres starter Seth Lugo (2-0) gave up one run on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts over six innings to earn the win. Chicago starter Michael Kopech (0-2) gave up one run and two hits in six innings, with three walks and five strikeouts. Rangers starter Jon Gray (1-1) allowed Edwin Rios' two-run homer in the second inning.
First Citizens BancShares and Glacier Bancorp are smart smaller bank stocks to own as investors re-examine the pummeled financial sector, according to Brian Belski, chief investment strategist at BMO Harris. "Unfortunately, you have to kind of sift through the rubble to find ... the best names," he said on CNBC's " Halftime Report ." That's despite the fact that small- and mid-size banks will likely see massive consolidation more broadly, Belski added. Three out of the five analysts with ratings on First Citizens say the stock is worth buying, according to Refinitiv. But after its recent drop, the average analyst expects the stock to rally almost 25% in the next year.

Tiger Global founder Chase Coleman says to buy shares of mega-cap tech companies, per Bloomberg. The sector is attractive again, Coleman says, because of emerging tech like AI. The hedge fund was stung by 2022's tech market rout, reportedly marking down $23 billion from its startup investments. The recommendation to look at opportunities in the tech space comes after Tiger Global was pummeled by the rout in the sector throughout 2022. The Wall Street Journal reported that the hedge fund marked down its venture capital bets by $23 billion last year.
watch nowThe spiraling banking crisis has prompted concerns about liquidity, credit and defaults, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Tuesday, and is leaving traders split. That represents an opportunity to buy into economically sensitive stocks, Cramer argued, because it suggests the Fed is nearly done tightening rate hikes. DefensiveCramer said the second set, defensive traders, are wrong because just a few weeks ago the defensive pharma and packaged goods names were being "pummeled" because they were perceived as too defensive. "It's ridiculous," Cramer said, that those traders think the outlook is much improved. How about sizable layoffs and a big juicy earnings surprise, something that it seems incapable of delivering," Cramer said.
