A $5 billion merger between Patterson-UTI Energy (PTEN.O) and NexTier Oilfield Solutions (NEX.N), two small oil field services firms, offers a way out. Big oil producers are already focusing on returning cash to investors as they face up to the inevitable. The International Energy Agency said on Wednesday that global demand growth is set to nearly halt by 2028, as the use of oil in transport falls from 2026. That trend is one reason Patterson-UTI and NexTier have both delivered negative total shareholder returns since 2018.

Tesla shares rose 4.1%. Some of them said on Friday that they would work to adapt to the Tesla standard. Analysts said the Ford and GM news was a big win that could make Tesla Superchargers an industry standard in the United States. GM and Ford shares closed up 1.1% and 1.3%, respectively. Musk on Friday said in a tweet it would be "ideal" for Tesla chargers to need only CCS adapters to meet federal charging standards.

Circuit Court of Appeals is the latest defeat for gun control laws in the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year expanding gun rights nationwide. The decision stems from a 2020 lawsuit by a Pennsylvania man, Bryan Range, who was barred under federal law from possessing a gun after pleading guilty to welfare fraud. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which enforces federal gun laws, declined to comment. Federal criminal law generally bars people convicted of crimes punishable by more than a year in prison from possessing guns.

When General Motors began outlining plans in 2020 to fully switch to electric vehicles, it didn’t account for one critical factor: Many of the battery minerals needed to fulfill its plans were still in the ground. “I remember seeing a report from our raw-materials team at the time saying, ‘There is plenty of lithium out there.
