The central clash in the pivotal Senate race in Montana — and the fight for control of the Senate itself — was on full display Monday night as Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican Tim Sheehy faced off in a heated debate. Like other vulnerable Senate Democrats, Tester tried to make it personal — touting his bipartisan bona fides, highlighting his own connections to his red-leaning state and suggesting his opponent cannot be trusted. Montana is the party’s next top target, with Tester running for re-election in a state Trump won by 16 points in 2020. James Richmond, 50, an IT consultant and voter in Helena, pointed to those comments in explaining why he plans to support Sheehy, despite supporting Tester’s work for veterans. An AARP poll conducted in late August found Sheehy leading Tester by 6 points, 55% to 49%.

"I'm not running to terminate the ACA," former President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post in March. That is, unless he could "come up with a plan that's going to cost our people, our population, less money and be better health care than Obamacare." Around 60% of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the 2010 health care law, a recent KFF poll found. The Harris campaign released a report on Monday that paints a dire picture of health care under a hypothetical Trump administration. The average ACA plan deductible, or amount a person must spend before their coverage kicks in, was over $3,000 in 2024, with some plan deductibles exceeding $7,000, KFF found.

For more on the Senate Republican leadership race, watch “Inside Politics with Manu Raju,” this Sunday at 8 a.m. EDT. If Republicans regain control of the Senate, a President Harris would have to rely on the next GOP leader to schedule a vote on a Supreme Court nominee. “It depends,” Texas Sen. John Cornyn said when asked if a Harris Supreme Court pick would get a vote in a Senate that he would lead. “We’ll cross the bridge when we come to it,” Thune said when asked last week if he’d allow a Harris Supreme Court pick to be confirmed. In 2008, Israel killed Hezbollah’s military leader, Imad Mughniyeh, in Damascus, Syria, yet the group only gathered strength in the years that followed. Four years earlier, Israel killed a founder of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, in an airstrike. The US has its own history of killing terrorist leaders in the hope that it will cripple its foes. ISIS also carried out devastating terrorist attacks in the West, for instance, in Paris in 2015 that killed 130 people. Republicans stand a good chance of erasing the Democrats’ narrow 51-49 Senate majority in November, a hard reality that complicates Harris' transition planning. Members of Harris’ transition team have studied that one — the handoff from Ronald Reagan to George H.W. Harris' team is operating under an unusually compressed timeline and is still building the basic apparatus needed to vet potential hires and staff an administration. Last month, Harris' campaign appointed Yohannes Abraham to run the team that is preparing for a transfer of power. He came to his new role with direct experience, having been executive director of Biden’s transition in 2020.

CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are tied among likely voters in North Carolina, while Harris holds a comfortable lead in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, according to two new CNN polls conducted by SSRS. In North Carolina, Harris and Trump stand at 48% each among likely voters. In Nebraska’s 2nd District, the so-called blue dot encompassing Omaha, Harris has 53% to Trump’s 42%, the poll finds. An 86% majority of Democratic likely voters and 69% of independent likely voters favor keeping the current system, while 69% of GOP likely voters say they’d rather move to a winner-take-all system in the state. But now, as the dangers of a widening deficit and mounting debt grow, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are making little effort to address it. A budget deficit occurs when a country’s spending exceeds what it collects in revenue, primarily through taxes. The deficit is expected to widen under the status quo and could get even worse under proposals by both Harris and Trump, if enacted. During the Trump-Harris presidential debate earlier this month, the budget deficit was mentioned just twice, when Harris jabbed Trump for his proposals, which are expected to add considerably more to the deficit than hers. In the 2021 fiscal year, during which Trump left office, the country ran a $2.8 trillion deficit.

Democrats, who hold a one-seat majority in the Senate, are growing increasingly nervous about Sen. Jon Tester’s re-election bid in Montana. Democrats had a clear advertising advantage coming out of a contentious March primary that cost Moreno’s campaign millions of dollars to win. U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco on Tuesday sided with several advocacy groups, finding the current practice of adding fluoride to drinking water supplies to fight cavities presented unreasonable risks for children’s developing brains. But the judge stressed he was not concluding with certainty that fluoridated water endangered public health. The agency had denied their so-called citizen’s petition asking it to consider banning fluoridation chemicals from public drinking water. More than 200 million Americans, or about 75% of the population, currently have fluoride added to their drinking water at recommended levels of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water. The U.S. practice differs from Europe, where fluoridated drinking water is rare.

Washington CNN —Ahmed Abu Khatallah, the Libyan militia leader convicted for his role in the deadly 2012 terrorist attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, was resentenced Thursday to 28 years in prison, despite federal prosecutors seeking at least 60 years to life. Khatallah was present at the hearing, sitting silently at the defense table in a white prison jumpsuit and a long white beard. He listened to the proceedings through a pair of interpreters, but did not address the court at any point. The judge also sentenced Khatallah to 10 years for the fourth crime and ordered him to serve that time after completing the 12-year sentence. The judge maintained the 10-year sentence for the fourth crime, which Khatallah will serve following the first 18 years.
