President-elect Donald Trump isn't ruling out the possibility of a war against Iran during his second term, saying in a recent interview that "anything can happen." Russia-UkraineWhile Trump didn't take war with Iran off the table, he made clear that he wants the wars between Russia and Ukraine and Israel and Hamas to end. He told Time that the situation in the Middle East is "an easier problem to handle than what’s happening with Russia and Ukraine." “We’re just escalating this war and making it worse.”According to Time, Trump said he would use U.S. support for Ukraine as leverage against Russia in trying to negotiate an end to the war. “I don’t believe we’ll have to, because we will send the whole family back,” Trump said.

Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest world chess champion on Thursday after beating reigning champion Ding Liren in the final match of the World Chess Championship in Singapore. “It’s fitting that the match goes to the last game, because we’ve both showed a lot of fighting spirit and played some very entertaining chess,” Gukesh said at a post-match news conference. But analysts said Ding made a crucial blunder in the deciding Game 14 that ultimately handed the teen the title. “We all know who Ding is — he has been one of the best players in history for several years. “Attenzione — ladri, carteristas!” (She makes her announcements in Italian, English and Spanish to alert as many tourists as possible.) But it’s by seeing her at work in Venice that you really calibrate her impact. Spiraling petty crime@cittadininondistrattiFor all their fun, Poli’s videos — currently she has 461 up on Instagram — have spotlit a spiraling problem of petty crime in Italy. Thefts on trains across the country were up 21% — but thefts on trains in Venice were up by a whopping 38.8%. And that means that Venice, whose estimated 30 million annual visitors dwarf the under-50,000 local population, has become a honeypot for petty crime.

Arnaot said Syria's interim government had tried to find Tice to reunite him with his family, but has so far had no luck locating the journalist, now 43. "We tried as much as possible to find information about Austin and return him to his mother, but we have not reached any result," he said. Instead, the State Department said Tice was believed to be in the custody of the Syrian government — a charge vehemently denied by the regime of ousted President Bashar al-Assad. With Assad overthrown by rebel forces, Tice's family has expressed renewed hope that they'll be reunited with their son. There’s been growing awareness of traumatic brain injury in sports, but TBI among victims of domestic violence is often overlooked and misdiagnosed, experts say. National research about brain injury and domestic violence is lacking. After a concussion, the brain needs time to recover, said Dr. Javier Cárdenas, director and founder of the West Virginia brain injury center. A 2021 University of Nebraska study discovered that many never receive medical treatment for traumatic brain injury. “Anywhere a domestic violence survivor goes, there should be some sort of screening for a concussion and brain injury,” Cardenas said.

Even though a record number of kids died from the flu last year, the percentage of children going without flu shots continues to plummet. “Flu vaccination levels have not rebounded to pre-pandemic levels.”This year’s flu shot covers the two main strains of the virus circulating so far, H1N1 and H3N2. The CDC estimated in a Nov. 22 post on its website that 724 pediatric flu deaths might have occurred last year. Fewer flu shots and an unusually long flu season are two likely factors. “It’s another reminder of how important vaccination is.”The Coverts strongly encourage flu shots, given their family history.

Sydney Reuters —Australia plans new rules to “create a financial incentive” for big tech firms to pay Australian media companies for news content on their platforms, Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services Stephen Jones announced on Thursday. The move, described as a “news bargaining initiative,” piles pressure on global tech giants like Facebook-owner Meta Platforms and Google to pay publishers for content or face the risk of paying millions to continue operations in Australia. The platforms at risk of the charge will be significant social media platforms and search engines with an Australian-based revenue in excess of 250 million Australian dollars (about $160 million), he said. The charge will be offset for any commercial agreements that are voluntarily entered into between the platforms and news media businesses, he added. Australia in 2021 passed laws to make the US tech giants, such as Alphabet’s Google and Meta, compensate media companies for the links that drive readers - and advertising revenue - to their platforms.
