CNN —Two stubborn fasteners trapped invaluable material sampled from an asteroid — but after a monthslong process, it has finally been released, NASA announced Thursday. The space agency already harvested about 2.5 ounces (70 grams) of rocks and dust from its OSIRIS-REx mission, which traveled nearly 4 billion miles to collect the unprecedented sample from the near-Earth asteroid called Bennu. But NASA revealed in October that some material remained out of reach in a capsule hidden inside an instrument called the Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism — a robotic arm with a storage container at one end that collected the sample from Bennu. The sampler head is held shut by 35 fasteners, according to NASA, but two of them proved too difficult to open. What the asteroid sample has revealed so farAs of Thursday afternoon, NASA said the trapped sample material had not yet been revealed.

A representative for Ackman declined to respond to questions from BI regarding his statements about plagiarism. Similar allegations against Gay and OxmanGay was accused in mid-December of plagiarizing portions of multiple academic articles, including her political science dissertation. Oxman has since admitted to the plagiarism , apologized, and pledged to review her sourcing and request corrections to her work as needed. "Part of what makes her human is that she makes mistakes, owns them, and apologizes when appropriate," he wrote in a post on X following Business Insider's report on Oxman's plagiarism. That's a starkly different approach from the one he took toward Gay after she stepped down as president earlier this week. At the time, Ackman said she should be fired from Harvard's faculty entirely because of what he called "serious plagiarism issues." However, the instances of Oxman's and Gay's plagiarism have more similarities than differences, according to experts and an internal analysis. Tommy Tuberville ended his monthslong hold on nearly all military promotions, saying he would allow hundreds of officers to move forward, while still demanding individual votes for about a dozen four-star generals and admirals. “I’m not going to hold the promotions of these people any longer. We just released them, everybody,” Tuberville told reporters Tuesday. “I think about 440 of them, everybody but 10 or 11, four stars.”

Sen. Tommy Tuberville announced Tuesday he would end his hold on most military promotions under pressure from fellow Republicans 10 months into a standoff sparked by the Pentagon’s abortion policy. “I’m releasing everybody,” Tuberville said, adding that he still has a hold on some four-star generals. But senators on both sides of the aisle have grown agitated in recent months over his tactic, which they say threatens military readiness and unfairly punishes service members. Tuberville appeared to be eyeing a handful of face-saving off-ramps in recent days to justify the end to his protest. Gen. Pat Ryder said after Tuberville’s announcement that the Defense Department is “encouraged” by the news but will continue to urge Tuberville to lift all of the holds.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he could not allow the world to forget about war in his country as attention shifts to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Zelensky’s message in a video address late Thursday is the clearest official acknowledgment that Ukraine faces a hard winter defending the territory it holds, with little immediate prospect of major advances against the nearly 20% of its land occupied by Russia. Instead, as the war approaches a third year, Ukraine is digging in just as winter starts to bite, with Russia pursuing grinding military offensives in the east and northeast.

Atlanta CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s attorneys in the Georgia election subversion case are set to defend their client in a Fulton County courtroom for the first time on Friday as they try to have the charges thrown out on First Amendment grounds. This is the first time Trump’s attorneys will appear in court in the Fulton County case, though their client won’t be with them. Trump hasn’t yet been in the Atlanta courthouse – he previously waived his right to an arraignment hearing – though he was processed at the Fulton County jail in late August. "Communication with the public is much easier, (it's) easy to manipulate those means in order to endanger national security," he added. House Republicans subpoenaed Hunter Biden earlier this month. The three-page letter from the younger Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, marked the latest escalation in the monthslong standoff between the president’s son and GOP lawmakers. The more aggressive approach seeks to ward off the prospect of a closed-door hearing after which Republican committee members could cherry-pick parts of Hunter Biden’s testimony, but it also augurs a more public phase of his travails.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker moved Tuesday to force a vote this week on expelling Rep. George Santos from the House, calling it a necessary step if Republicans fail to take action in light of the recent ethics report that found Santos blatantly stole from his campaign and deceived donors. Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., brought back to the floor legislation he first introduced in February to force the expulsion vote. “Whatever it takes to get that vote this week, is what we're doing,” Garcia said. Expelling Santos, a Republican from New York, would require support from at least two-thirds of House members voting. Santos has rejected any suggestion he step down before an expulsion vote.

Congress returns this week with a number of priorities to work through, as an end-of-year legislative sprint begins with an eye toward a jam-packed January. Indeed, the House already approved a funding package for Israel, though it’s tied to cuts to IRS funding that is a nonstarter for Democrats. 2 that likewise alienates Democrats has become central to the GOP immigration pitch, leaving the two chambers starkly opposed on key components of the supplemental package. With the dynamics at play, the package faces a tenuous path forward – and a tight deadline to get it done. But after the committee released the report, his removal – which would mark only the sixth expulsion in the history of the chamber – appears likely.

New York (AP) — Rep. George Santos has said he expects to be expelled from Congress following a scathing report by the House Ethics Committee that found substantial evidence of lawbreaking by the New York Republican. In a defiant speech Friday sprinkled with taunts and obscenities aimed at his congressional colleagues, Santos insisted he was “not going anywhere.” But he acknowledged that his time as a member of Congress, at least, may soon be coming to an end. “I know I’m going to get expelled when this expulsion resolution goes to the floor,” he said Friday night during a conversation on X Spaces. HOUSTON (AP) — A Texas attorney has been accused of using work-related visits to a county jail to smuggle in legal paperwork laced with ecstasy and synthetic marijuana to inmates over the past several months, authorities announced Monday. Ronald Lewis, 77, was arrested on Friday after arriving at the Harris County Jail in Houston to visit an inmate, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a news conference. Other attorneys are also suspected of smuggling drug-laced paperwork into the jail but “we don’t think it’s actually widespread,” Gonzalez said. (AP) — The manager of the long-troubled water system in Mississippi's capital city proposed a slight rate increase for most residents Friday alongside what he said is a first-in-the-nation proposal to reduce water rates for low-income people who get government help with grocery bills. If enacted, it would be the latest in a series of changes after infrastructure breakdowns in 2022 caused many Jackson residents to go days and weeks without safe running water. “We think this is a great opportunity to really change the dialogue around water and sewer in the city of Jackson,” Henifin said at a news conference. The proposal also marks the first rate increase since a federal judge appointed Henifin to manage Jackson's water system last November. JXN Water will start shutting off water for people who don't pay their bills sometime after Jan. 1st, Henifin said.

The upheaval at Documenta is just one example of how Europe’s art world is being torn by debates about Israel and Gaza, as some institutions have moved to postpone the shows of artists who have criticized Israel. Documenta was initially staged in 1955 as the first large-scale exhibition in West Germany of the art of the European avant-garde. It was a direct response to the Degenerate Art Show, the denunciatory exhibition of modern art staged by the Nazis in Munich in 1937. Although the mural was taken down, it set off a monthslong debate in Germany’s art world about antisemitism, Palestinian activism and Germany’s relationship to formerly colonized countries. Hoskote said Documenta was one of the art world’s greatest events, partly because it had always been a forum for new ideas.
