Shares of Trump Media soared more than 20% on Monday morning, as the firm majority-owned by former President Donald Trump sought to bounce back from a weekslong plunge that cut the stock price nearly in half. Trump Media, which trades as DJT on the Nasdaq, was trading around $33 a share on much higher than average volume as of 10:50 a.m. Shares of Trump Media sunk even lower last week, after its registration of additional shares was declared effective by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Trump posts almost exclusively on Truth Social, the microblogging social media platform that is Trump Media's sole product to date. But Trump in early June joined the social media behemoth TikTok, whose traffic dwarfs that of Truth Social.

Nvidia had some strong moves in the days after its 10-for-1 stock split traded in the market on June 10. Tuesday brought weaker-than-expected May retail sales , which the stock market took in stride, perhaps on the view that softness helps the view that the Federal Reserve will indeed cut interest rates later this year. Ultimately, the economic readings this past week signal that while U.S. growth remains resilient, things are slowing, which is an ideal setup for stock market bulls. The Fed's favorite inflation gauge and the tail end of earning season will be drivers of the market in the week ahead. Read previewThe Federal Reserve's reluctance to lower interest rates in the near term is a risky gamble that could drive the US towards a recession, Claudia Sahm told CNBC. "But it's a real risk, and I do not understand why the Fed is pushing that risk. At current readings, that likely means just one rate cut in 2024, the Fed said. For this reason, Sahm told CNBC that the Fed should start a gradual cutting cycle now, and take the economy off a path that could require more severe action if not addressed. Markets, meanwhile, remain convinced that the Fed will follow with more than just one cut.

With stocks set to close out a strong first half of 2024, investors have just one more key inflation hurdle to clear in the week ahead: May's personal expenditure report. Next week's personal consumption expenditure data, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, could show whether that overall picture is intact. May's consumer price index, for example, showed no increase from the prior month. Last month's producer price index , a measure of wholesale prices, unexpectedly dropped from the previous reading. In New York, probation officers talk to the defendant and the prosecutor in separate pre-sentencing interviews in preparation for what's known as a pre-sentencing report. AdvertisementTrump is not getting preferential treatment by being allowed to do his interview via video and with his lawyer, a city spokeswoman told Business Insider. It is true that defendants who are locked up while awaiting sentencing typically do pre-sentencing interviews via video, defense lawyers told Business Insider. But defendants like Trump, who are at liberty, are almost always required to appear alone and in person for their probation interviews, lawyers told BI. "I've never been present at a probation interview," said veteran Legal Aid attorney Sam Roberts.

Treasury yield fall as Fed meeting kicks off

U.S. Treasury yields fell Tuesday as the Federal Reserve meeting is set to begin, with investors awaiting the central bank's monetary policy decision and key economic data. The June Federal Reserve meeting is set to begin Tuesday, before concluding with the central bank's latest interest rate decision and policy guidance on Wednesday. The Fed is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged this month, with the first rate cut being priced in for later this year. Many investors will be hoping for the data to show that the economy is cooling, as this could suggest the Fed will cut interest rates sooner. Investors will therefore also be closely following economic projections released by the Fed on Wednesday alongside its interest rate decision.

Boeing 737 MAX airplanes are pictured outside a Boeing factory on March 25, 2024 in Renton, Washington. The results released Tuesday compared unfavorably with Europe's Airbus, which reported orders for 27 new planes in May. Boeing also saw Aerolineas Argentinas cancel an order for a single Max jet, bringing its net sales for the month to three. The dismal results followed poor figures for April, when Boeing reported seven sales — none of them for the Max. Despite the slow pace of recent sales, Boeing still has a huge backlog of more than 5,600 orders.

Since the start of the generative AI boom, sparked by the release of ChatGPT, the Apple CEO has remained largely silent on AI. Critically, Google's efforts to weave AI into its mobile operating system have threatened to make Apple look out-of-sync. Android users have been introduced to much-hyped generative AI features, while iOS users have been left to make do with an outdated Siri. During IO, Sameer Samat, Google's Android chief, told my colleague Alistair Barr that AI presented a "once-in-a-generation moment to reinvent what phones can do." Cook will be ready to show everyone that iOS can compete with Android in the AI era.

Here’s where the jobs are for May 2024 — in one chart

The three sectors, respectively, added 68,000, 43,000 and 42,000 jobs, similar to trends seen over the past year. The U.S. economy added 272,000 jobs for the month , coming out significantly higher than the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 190,000. Job growth in May was surprisingly strong, pushing back on lingering fears of a broader economic slowdown and likely slowing the Federal Reserve's rate-cutting timeline. On the other hand, social assistance employment trended higher as it added 15,000 last month, below the sector's average of 22,000 jobs per month seen over the last year. Investors walked away from the report discouraged that the Federal Reserve would cut rates in June, noting that the increase in job growth and above-average wage growth paints a picture of a fairly strong consumer.

Reform UK party leader Nigel Farage walks to speak to supporters as he launches his election candidacy at Clacton Pier on June 4, 2024 in Clacton-on-Sea, England. Labour is expected to win 40% of votes to the Conservatives' 19% and Reform's 17%, the online polling showed. Farage's surprise return as Reform leader on Monday dealt a deadly blow to the party, threatening to steal a significant share of votes on the right. In the 2019 election, his then-Brexit Party agreed not to field candidates in hundreds of seats to safeguard a Conservative win. The announcement hurts Sunak's earlier efforts to win right-wing votes by hardening the Tories' stance on migration and the U.K.'s membership of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Jonathan and Jacqueline Sanchez pushed their net worth over $1 million in 2021, through a combination of savings, investments and real estate equity. But it took awhile for Jonathan, who grew up in a frugal, single-parent household to feel fully financially secure, despite the couple's millionaire status. But the diversity of their income sources, as well as their commitment to being frugal, are some of the major reasons the couple now lives — and spends — comfortably. Rather, think of how you'd live in the case of a real financial emergency. Having a diversified group of income sources allows the couple to feel financially secure, even as they go through the usual ups and downs of launching and growing an online business.

Boeing’s Starliner sits on the launchpad at sunset, at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, on Friday, May 31. The entire stack, including the rocket and spacecraft, was rolled back from the launchpad for testing and repairs. Several issues also cropped up during the June 1 launch attempt, which was called with less than four minutes left on the countdown clock prior to liftoff. But moments before liftoff, the ground launch sequencer — the computer that tells the rocket to launch — triggered an automatic hold that prevented the launch. The United Launch Alliance team investigated the issue and replaced the computer over the weekend, and deemed Starliner ready to fly once more.
