It was a combination of the skill of the flight crew and good luck that no one was killed. But there were problems with five rivets near where the door plug was installed, and Boeing workers removed the door plug in order to fix those rivets. It would have had much more difficulty making it safely to the ground if the door plug had failed hours, rather than minutes, from the nearest runway. But the probe is only one of the problems Boeing faces because of the incident. He has faced harsh criticism for many of Boeing’s problems, with more than a dozen whistleblowers at the company complaining to congressional investigators that they faced pressure and retaliation for flagging safety problems in the company’s assembly process.

Chinese researchers envision the solution as flotillas of mass-produced laser subs that could be dispatched to oceans around the world. They would wait for tracking data from other non-submarine platforms to determine when a target satellite is overhead. In addition to destroying satellites, these subs could also blast aircraft or land targets such as radars and oil refineries. Laser subs could also shield China's ballistic missile submarines from detection.

The Guardian said Brown wrote to police after documents that were recently made public during civil court proceedings reportedly showed Lewis met with detectives in 2011. After he was hired by the Post, Lewis also tried to kill a story about his alleged involvement in the phone hacking scandal coverup, offering an NPR reporter an interview in exchange for squashing the forthcoming article. In May, Brown wrote to the Metropolitan Police and said he was told that the “Met’s special inquiry team” would look into it. The security threats were believed to be genuine and were not devised as part of an alleged ‘cover-up’ and there is no evidence to show that is the case,” the News UK spokesperson said. The allegations swirling around Lewis have roiled The Washington Post newsroom in recent months.

New York Italian Food Is Getting Weird (in a Good Way)

On a recent Friday at Daphne’s, a new Italian restaurant in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, the red sauce was green, made from chartreuse-colored tomatoes and a splash of vodka. The lasagna came in the form of noodles fried into chips, broken over a dish of beef tartare topped with shoyu-cured egg yolk. There was a Milanese cutlet, but its crisp carapace swaddled swordfish, not veal. And the booths were neither rustic and wooden nor wrapped in red vinyl; the place’s co-owners, Gary Fishkop and Paul Cacici, had instead installed banquettes covered with custom-made buttery-soft spearmint green leather. Farther east in Brooklyn, at Marie’s in Bushwick, the James Beard-nominated chef Miguel Trinidad serves chopped cheese ravioli the size of drink coasters and lamb patty white ragù.

Germans Combat Climate Change From Their Balconies

At a Berlin trade fair for sustainability, a new gadget caught Waltraud Berg’s eye — a solar panel small enough to be easily installed on the side of a balcony and then plugged into a wall socket to feed energy produced by the sun directly into her home. “I was absolutely thrilled to learn that such a thing even existed, that you can generate your own power and be more independent,” said Ms. Berg, a retiree who installed several panels on the south-facing balcony of her Berlin apartment by herself. Each of the lightweight panels produces only enough electricity to charge a laptop or run a small refrigerator. But in homes across Germany, they are powering a quiet transformation, bringing the green revolution into the hands of people without requiring them to make a large investment, find an electrician or use heavy tools.

“We’re a long way from saying this, but if there is life on Venus producing phosphine, we have no idea why it’s producing it. So finding them in the atmosphere of Venus is interesting on that basis as well. But further analysis of that data by Clements’ team revealed weak traces of the molecule, reinforcing the theory. “To date, our analyses remain unchallenged in the literature,” said Mogul, who was not involved in the research of Clements’ team. While detecting phosphine and ammonia in Venus’ clouds is exciting, it is just the beginning of a longer journey to unravel the mysteries of that planet’s atmosphere, he said.
