LAS VEGAS (AP) — General Motors said Tuesday it has registered with Formula One's governing body to become an engine supplier starting in 2028 in what is seen as a huge boost to Michael Andretti's bid to join the global motorsports series. “We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit,” GM President Mark Reuss said. GM in January announced its partnership with Andretti Global under its Cadillac banner on Andretti's application to join F1. GM doesn't have its own F1 power unit and said its effort would be in conjunction with an existing manufacturer. If Andretti gets approved to join an expanded F1 grid, he would have to use another manufacturer's engine until 2028.

Now, non-union companies are rushing to give their non-unionized workers raises, too. Toyota said it’s raising wages by more than 9%, and Honda announced 11% wage hikes beginning next year. While the auto companies didn’t directly attribute their raises to the UAW, the UAW has said it will be targeting non-union factories in the wake of its big wins. UAW President Shawn Fain already encouraged non-union autoworkers to join the UAW, and Fain has called the non-union wage increases the “UAW bump.” The UAW hopes its new contracts with Detroit automakers will inspire other workers to unionize.

Eight people were killed in southwest Texas on Wednesday morning when a driver suspected of human smuggling tried to elude law enforcement officers and slammed head-on into an S.U.V., the Texas Department of Public Safety said. The crash occurred just after 6:30 a.m. on US-57 near Batesville, some 80 miles southwest of San Antonio, the department said in a statement. The driver, a 21-year-old from Houston, was killed, as were the five passengers, some of whom were from Honduras, the department said. The driver and passenger of the S.U.V., both from Georgia, were also killed, according to the authorities, who withheld the names of the dead pending notification of their families. A spokeswoman for the Zavala County Sheriff’s Office declined to provide further information about the crash on Wednesday, noting that the Texas Department of Public Safety had taken over the investigation.

Global yields are moving too - the 10-year Japanese Government Bond yield is back below 0.85%, having come within two basis points of 1% last week. The decline in U.S. bond yields is removing some of the dollar's shine, which in turn is allowing Asian currencies to fight back. Yen traders on Thursday are also eyeing Japanese bank lending figures for October and September's trade and current account report.

☆ Cruise recalls all of its self driving cars to fix their programming

CNN —Cruise, General Motors’ self-driving vehicle subsidiary, has recalled all 950 of its autonomous vehicles for a software update. Late last month, Cruise paused all its public testing operations while it investigated the incident that led to the recall. GM had announced Monday that it was pausing production test versions of the Cruise Origin, a self driving vehicle GM and Cruise designed jointly with Honda. After striking the pedestrian, the Cruise AV attempted to pull off to side of the road to avoid causing an obstruction. Cruise doesn’t sell its self-driving vehicles so all the cars are owned by either Cruise or GM, which produces the heavily modified Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles.
