In response to the El Paso mass shooting, MALDEF created a new program to expand its litigation and advocacy work to include anti-Latino hate crimes, including discriminatory policing policies. America’s Voice, an immigrant advocacy group, has been tracking what it calls the normalization of the invasion and great replacement rhetoric by congressional members. In the five years since the mass shooting in El Paso, 165 members of the current Congress have amplified the replacement theory and invasion rhetoric, said Zachary Mueller, America’s Voice senior research director, citing a report done by the group. Also, in this year’s first seven months, congressional members have pushed the invasion and great replacement theory more than 650 times in social media accounts and filed 11 pieces of legislation using the “invasion” rhetoric. "Use of invasion rhetoric needs to be seen as a national problem.

“I think you were trying to roast me, but this is actually fact — I do have a BMI of 30. Critics say the term BMI has become a societal judgment by lumping individuals into arbitrary categories that perpetuate misconceptions about body weight. “She could easily say, ‘I am in perfectly good health, so just take your BMI of 25 and shove it.’”That’s exactly the scenario facing Maher. Conversely, BMI can underestimate body fat in older adults and anyone who has lost muscle, according to the Harvard T.H. Can Kamala Harris Rebuild the Democratic Coalition?
  + stars: | 2024-08-02 | by ( Nate Cohn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
With a little over three months until the presidential election, Kamala Harris inherited a Democratic coalition that was badly frayed. In polls this year, young, Black and Hispanic voters abandoned President Biden in droves. To win, Vice President Harris will need to stitch a winning Democratic coalition back together. While it’s still early, the first polls since Ms. Harris all but locked up the nomination suggest she has already made some progress. To win the Electoral College, she’ll need additional gains in the months ahead.

Biles' post on the social media platform X seemed to reference Trump's recent controversial comments that immigrants are "taking Black jobs." The Republican presidential nominee had said, "They're taking Black jobs now and it could be 18, it could be 19 and even 20 million people," during his June 27 debate against President Joe Biden. "They're taking Black jobs, and they're taking Hispanic jobs, and you haven't seen it yet, but you're going to see something that's going to be the worst in our history," Trump said. Data does not support Trump's claim that immigrants are "taking" jobs from American workers. With nine Olympic medals, six of them gold, Biles is the most decorated U.S. gymnast in history.

The unemployment rate fell for Asian Americans from June to July, bucking a broader trend, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate among Asian Americans dipped to 3.7% in July from 4.1% a month earlier. The result went against the overall unemployment rate, which rose to 4.3% last month from 4.1% in June. Meanwhile, the jobless rate for white Americans rose to 3.8% in July, up from 3.5% a month earlier. For Hispanic Americans, this number climbed to 5.3% last month, compared to the rate of 4.9% in June.

Kamala Harris inherited a Democratic coalition that was badly frayed. In polls, young, Black and Hispanic voters abandoned President Biden in droves. And for the first time in years, more Americans said they leaned Republican than Democratic. To win, the vice president will need to win back the deserters without alienating the anti-Trump moderates who put Democrats over the top in 2020. But while she’s running ahead of where Biden stood when he left the race, she’s still short of hitting traditional Democratic benchmarks.

A federal appeals court further narrowed the scope of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, ruling that members of separate minority groups cannot join together to claim that a political map has been drawn to dilute their voting power. The 12-to-6 ruling on Thursday by the full Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals overturned almost four decades of legal precedent, as well as an earlier ruling by a three-judge panel of the same appeals court. It applies only in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the three states where the court has jurisdiction, but the decision has national implications and may be appealed to the Supreme Court. The redrawn boundaries reduced their combined share of the district’s electorate to 38 percent, and a lawsuit claimed that doing so violated Section Two of the Voting Rights Act, which prohibits drawing maps that dilute minority voting power. A lower court and the three-judge appellate panel both ruled that the new map was a clear violation of the law.

People without bank accounts might also turn to check cashing services or consider payday loans, especially if they're the only brick-and-mortar financial services in their neighborhood. The Community Financial Services Association of America, which represents payday lenders, did not respond to a request for comment. "They're going out into the community, they're promoting their services into the community, they're creating programs specifically for the community," he said.

CNN —During the first whirlwind week of her second presidential campaign, Kamala Harris locked up the support of the Democratic Party, recruited thousands of volunteers and hauled in $200 million in donations. The next test of Harris’ appeal will take place Tuesday in Georgia, where her campaign is hosting an Atlanta rally. “The groundswell of support around the vice president is real and it is meaningful,” Dan Kanninen, Harris’ battleground state director, told reporters Monday. “Tomorrow, Vice President Harris’ visit will highlight her brighter vision for the future, where our freedoms are protected and every American has a fair shot. Harris opens up new potential paths to victorySince entering the race, Harris has shown momentum in early polling. This became worrisome for the Biden campaign as warning signs flashed in states like Virginia and New Hampshire. The positive early polling is a great sign for the vice president, but it isn't the only metric that shows momentum. Trump's pick for vice president makes things interestingVice presidential picks are far from guaranteed to help a presidential hopeful win a state. With Biden out of the race, Democrats will likely seek to tie the election — anchored by Harris' candidacy — to the party's future.

Read previewVice President Kamala Harris' campaign is in the process of choosing her running mate, and who she chooses will provide insight into her battle plan for November. With 20 electoral votes, winning the battleground state will likely be a crucial part of both former President Donald Trump and Harris' campaign. Choosing Shapiro, the state's governor, who has proven he can win in Pennsylvania, could significantly bolster Harris' ticket there, Gift said. Kevin Fahey, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Nottingham, agrees but told BI that a Shapiro pick may indicate some trepidation in Harris' campaign. Plus, he's already been an attack dog against Trump's running mate, Sen. JD Vance, going after him for his Appalachian credentials.

How Kamala Harris can beat Donald Trump

Still, the 2020 results show that Harris can make up even more ground with these groups in her expected matchup against Donald Trump. Among Black voters, Biden led Trump 84% to 9% at the end of the 2020 campaign. This may seem like bad news for the Harris campaign, and, in one clear way, it is. Without improving among these groups, Harris likely cannot win against the former president. The bottom line is that the latest CNN polling provides the Harris campaign with some hope.

That’s a closer contest than earlier CNN polling this year had found on the matchup between Biden and Trump. Half of those who back Harris in the new poll (50%) say their vote is more in support of her than against Trump. Among voters under 35, 49% said in April or June that they would support Trump and 42% Biden, but now, 47% support Harris to 43% for Trump. Among Hispanic voters, Biden trailed Trump in earlier polling 50% to 41%; those same voters now split about evenly, 47% Harris to 45% for Trump. That narrowed gap is driven at least partly by increased Harris support among independents who lean toward the Democratic Party.

Montaque cofounded Group Black in 2021 with the goal of directing $500 million in advertising money to Black-owned media in its first 18 months. With the pledge, Group Black laid out a plan to steer money to Black media owners and acquire media companies. Bough, Group Black's chief strategy officer, was a former Mondelēz and PepsiCo marketer who presented the CNBC reality show "Cleveland Hustles." Various outlets reported that Group Black mounted bids for media companies including the Sports Illustrated publisher Arena Group, the Paramount-owned BET, Vice Media, and Vox Media. Gretchen Whitmer, endorsed the vice president, giving her a clear path to the nomination.
