Get ready for a ‘slowcession’ in 2023, Moody’s says

But Moody’s Analytics says the more likely scenario is a “slowcession,” where growth grinds to a near halt but a full economic downturn is narrowly avoided. “Under almost any scenario, the economy is set to have a difficult 2023,” Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi wrote in a report on Tuesday. Why Moody’s is predicting no recessionIn addition to cooling inflation, Moody’s expressed optimism about the ability of consumers to weather the storm in 2023. “Shoppers are the firewall between an economy in recession and an economy that skirts a downturn,” Zandi wrote. “It is important not to be Pollyannish, but it also important not to convince ourselves that a recession is inevitable,” Zandi wrote.
To Russian security agencies operating in Ukraine, he said late on Monday in comments translated by Reuters: "Yes, it is difficult for you now. The situation in the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions is extremely difficult." Both Putin and Lukashenko were also at pains to dismiss the idea of Russia annexing or absorbing Belarus. Russian troops that moved to Belarus in October will conduct battalion tactical exercises, Russia's Interfax news agency reported, citing the defence ministry. It also said Ukrainian air and artillery forces carried out more than a dozen strikes on Russian troops and hardware, including ammunition dumps, and shot down two helicopters.

Managers have become alarmingly distanced from the average worker, making calls based on guesses that aren't informed by actual labor. Musk has demanded that managers are able to create "good code" yet does not appear to be much of a coder himself. Jackson Palmer, a cocreator of dogecoin, said Musk was a "grifter" who "had trouble running basic code" in their interactions. He's targeted critical teams at Twitter and pushed others to quit, which have resulted in a huge upswing in hate speech on the platform. In fact, by his own logic of how managers can contribute to the company, Musk should be summarily firing himself any day now.

In the past two years, highly funded startups have tried to disrupt mental-health care. The startups said they wanted to help solve the industry's biggest problems: Mental-health care is too expensive, and there isn't enough of it to go around. BATTLEFIELD SLOWDOWNUkraine's Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov told Reuters earlier this month that bad winter conditions would give both Kyiv and Moscow's forces a chance to recuperate. LONDON, Nov 25 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin will on Friday meet the mothers of soldiers fighting in Ukraine, the Kremlin said, as the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War Two grinds into its 10th month. The Kremlin said Putin would meet with mothers of reservists called up to fight as well as professional soldiers of the armed forces. Ukraine and the West say Putin has no justification for what they cast as an imperial-style war of occupation. Russia last publicly disclosed its losses on September 21, when Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said 5,937 Russian soldiers had been killed. The United States' top general estimated on Nov. 9 that Russia and Ukraine had each seen more than 100,000 of their soldiers killed or wounded.

YouTube ad revenue fell 2% from last year, the first time the platform showed a decline in revenue. For years, YouTube has been Google's ad revenue growth engine. The video unit posted its first ever year-over-year decline in ad revenue, as advertisers pulled back due to the uncertain economy. The results raised questions about YouTube's long-term revenue growth potential. Google executives tried to minimize the significance of YouTube's decline by saying the company suffered from comparisons to its breakout growth last year.
Beyond Catastrophe A New Climate Reality Is Coming Into View By David Wallace-WellsYou can never really see the future, only imagine it, then try to make sense of the new world when it arrives. (A United Nations report released this week ahead of the COP27 climate conference in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, confirmed that range.) A little lower is possible, with much more concerted action; a little higher, too, with slower action and bad climate luck. There were climate-change skeptics in some very conspicuous positions of global power. New emissions peaks are expected both this year and next, which means that more damage is being done to the future climate of the planet right now than at any previous point in history.

REUTERS/Eric GaillardPARIS, Oct 10 (Reuters) - France's CGT trade union denounced TotalEnergies' (TTEF.PA) conditional offer for early wage talks as "blackmail", saying strikes that have left a third of the country's fuel stations running short would continue until at least Tuesday. President Emmanuel Macron, whose government is under mounting pressure to act as the strike grinds on and more fuel stations run out of some products, called for a quick end to the crisis. A CGT union representative later said the strike at the refineries would be extended until Tuesday. Long tailbacks formed at fuel stations in the Paris region as drivers tried to fill up before more pumps run dry. "This only encourages the striking workers, who are more united than ever," a CGT official at TotalEnergies' Feyzin refinery said of the company's conditional offer.

The Fed is expected to fire off another three-quarter point rate hike — its third in a row. We had theoretical road maps up until now, but from the Fed's point of view they're crossing into a world of tightening. Neutral is considered to be the interest rate level where Fed policy is no longer easy, but not yet restrictive. The Fed has considered 2.5% to be neutral, and if it raises by three-quarters of a point, fed funds will be in a range of 3% to 3.25%. In June, the Fed forecast the unemployment rate would be 3.7% this year, the same level it was at in August.
That would be one plausible explanation behind the great box office slowdown. Although three new movies opened nationwide, none were able to crack the top five on domestic charts and only two -- A24's satirical slasher "Bodies Bodies Bodies" and Lionsgate's vertigo-inducing thriller "Fall" -- managed to infiltrate the top 10. After two weeks on the big screen, the Brad Pitt-led "Bullet Train" has generated $54.4 million at the domestic box office. In eighth place, "Bodies Bodies Bodies" beat expectations with $3.2 million from 1,290 locations. That means "Maverick" is roughly $5 million away from dethroning Marvel's "Avengers: Infinity War" as the sixth-highest grossing movie in domestic box office history.
