Jamie Dimon said he expects to stay at JPMorgan "for a long period" rather than join the government. One way that Dimon might do that after stepping down as CEO is to stay on as chairman. "I intend to be doing what I'm doing — I almost guarantee I'll be doing this — for a long period of time, or at least until the board kicks me out," he said. (The firm has previously said it intends to separate the CEO and chairman roles after Dimon steps down.) The Wells Fargo analyst on Friday suggested Dimon has been commenting on government pontifications in the past year more than at any other time in his career, raising questions about his political aspirations.

However, prices for many physical goods have deflated as supply-and-demand dynamics return to normal following pandemic-era contortions. "Outside of goods prices, I don't think we'll see price cuts," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's. That served to weaken demand, which also pushed down prices, economists said. Outside of supply-demand dynamics, the U.S. dollar's strength relative to other global currencies has also helped rein in prices for imported goods, economists said. Energy, food and consumer electronicsOutside of imported goods, consumers may also see a "normalization" of prices in food and energy, Zandi said.

Investors who fear stubborn inflation, if not an outright rebound, got a bit of a salve on Friday morning. Wholesale prices showed no change month over month for September, coming in below expectations. The producer price index report may help offset some of the slight concerns about Thursday's consumer price index report, which was a bit hotter than expected. The personal consumption expenditures price index for September will be released on Oct. 31. "We think the Fed is really still on track to cut 25 [basis points] at each of the next two meetings," Seif added.

A TD bank stands in Brooklyn on June 04, 2024 in New York City. TD Bank is reportedly expected to pay a whopping $3 billion in fines to the Department of Justice and financial crimes regulators to settle a federal probe over its alleged failure to monitor money laundering by drug cartels. TD Bank, whose U.S. unit is the 10th-largest American bank by assets, is also set to accept limits on its growth as part of the settlement, according to the report by The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday night. The reported restrictions on TD Bank's growth would be similar to those imposed by the Federal Reserve on Wells Fargo in 2018 over what the Fed called "widespread consumer abuses" at that bank. TD Bank shares were down more than 3% midday Thursday.
