While Florida has managed to reverse the trend somewhat, the risk to homeowners is set to intensify. The Senate Budget Committee found that the rate of homeowners losing their private insurance also rose in Hawaii, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. Mark Friedlander, a spokesperson for the Insurance Information Institute, said the drop reflects a series of changes in recent years to stabilize the state's private insurance market after more than a dozen companies left the state or stopped writing new policies. The commission is working to overhaul regulations to slow the trend, including requiring private insurers to sell in risky areas. As insurers of last resort try to shift more risk to the private market, home insurance premiums are expected to keep rising.

That led to an influx of copyright complaints, leaving Bluesky's slim moderation team to sift through which posts to keep and remove, said Aaron Rodericks, Bluesky's head of trust and safety, in an interview. Rodericks said even as Bluesky has experienced growing pains, they're still not at the large scale seen on other major social media platforms. Most major social media platforms report much higher rates of CSAM. Disinformation researchers routinely identify account swarms, particularly pushing messages sympathetic to the Russian, Chinese and Iranian governments, on major social media platforms, although they rarely get significant traction. Navigating a busy college schedule while running your own business is even harder. For Elena Bonvicini, who founded the viral clothing brand EB Denim in high school, scaling her business during her time at the University of Southern California was a tall order. By the time she was a junior, EB Denim was bringing in over $1 million in revenue and Bonvicini was managing a handful of employees and interns. She would then have those jeans reworked into new designs, set up shop in her sorority house and invite her Kappa Kappa Gamma sisters to browse the selection. If she could drop out of school, Bonvincini thought, she would have even more time to grow her business.

Blake Lively accused her co-star Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment on the set of “It Ends With Us,” and then trying to ruin her reputation after she expressed her concerns, according to a complaint she filed. Another incident alleges that Baldoni did not act in character while they filmed a slow dance scene that did not require sound. The US Senate passed a bipartisan bill early Saturday to increase Social Security benefits for close to 3 million federal, state and local public sector workers, which includes firefighters, police officers and teachers. If the legislation is signed into law by President Joe Biden, it would apply to all benefits payable after December 2023. The Social Security Fairness Act — which already passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support in November — eliminates two policies that have reduced Social Security benefits for public service employees. “The GPO reduces the spousal or surviving spousal benefits of people who receive pensions on the basis of noncovered employment,” CBO noted. The Summary NASA’s Parker Solar Probe is expected to dive extremely close to the solar surface on Dec. 24. The mission was designed to study the sun’s outer atmosphere and help researchers learn about how solar storms erupt into space. The agency’s Parker Solar Probe is days away from making its closest-ever approach to the sun on Tuesday, swooping nearer to our star than any other human-made object in history. As the Parker Solar Probe swoops close to the sun, it will likely fly through plumes of solar plasma and could even dive into active regions of the star, Korreck said. This busy phase, which is typically characterized by a flurry of solar storms and high magnetic activity, is known as the solar maximum.

The traffic cameras, which use AI to detect and flag certain driving behaviors, might make it easier to prosecute more people than ever before for driving infractions. Acusensus, an Australian company, has worked with governments in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to roll out some of the AI traffic cameras. Its camera system, called “Heads Up,” uses AI to catch drivers who are texting while driving or aren’t wearing seat belts. Speed and red light cameras are already familiar to U.S. drivers, capturing license plates and sending tickets by mail. The Queensland government reported that since it set up the cameras, road deaths have gone down by 7.1%.
