An Inupiaq herself, she has been hiding away from her own identity. To be a police officer in Ennis is often to represent the interests of the town’s biggest employer. Navarro and Danvers are not in the business of administering environmental justice or blowing the whistle on polluted groundwater. CNN —Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on Sunday said that while she doesn’t need to beat former President Donald Trump in her home state’s Republican presidential primary next month, the results need to be better for her than they were in New Hampshire. Polls show Haley has a major gap to close in South Carolina, which holds its GOP primary February 24, if she intends to shave off some of Trump’s momentum following his 11-point victory in the far less conservative New Hampshire race last week. Haley said Trump can’t “bully his way to the nomination” as he ramps up pressure on supporters to abandon Haley. When asked Sunday whether she would be willing to be Trump’s running mate, Haley said she was running to win.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A man who stormed the U.S. Capitol with fellow Proud Boys extremist group members was sentenced on Wednesday to six years in prison after he berated and insulted the judge who punished him. The judge warned Bru that he could be kicked out of the courtroom if he continued to disrupt the proceedings. Prosecutors described Bru as one of the least remorseful rioters who assaulted the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He later joined other rioters inside the Capitol and entered the Senate gallery, where he flashed a hand gesture associated with the Proud Boys as he posed for selfie photos. He has “continued to spew disinformation” from jail since his re-arrest and trial, prosecutors said.

Those missiles were hit before they could be fired at ships in the Red Sea or the Gulf of Aden. That changed quickly after the Hamas attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, and the Houthi attacks on commercial ships a month later. U.S. analysts have been rushing to catalog more potential Houthi targets every day, the officials said. That effort yielded many of the targets hit on Jan. 11 and on Monday, officials said. Many Republicans in Congress and some former senior U.S. military officials say the approach is not working.

Shih Ming-teh, a lifelong campaigner for democracy in Taiwan who spent over two decades in prison for his cause and later started a protest movement against a president from his former party, died on Jan. 15, his 83rd birthday, in Taipei, the island’s capital. The cause was complications of an operation to remove a liver tumor, said his wife, Chia-chiun Chen Shih. Mr. Shih helped lead a pro-democracy protest in 1979 that was brutally broken up by the police and that is now viewed as a turning point in Taiwan’s journey from authoritarianism to democracy. “I was imprisoned for 25 years, and I faced the possibility of the death penalty twice, but each time I came out, I instantly plunged back into the whole effort to overthrow the Chiang family dictatorship,” Mr. Shih said in an interview with The New York Times in 2022. “I’m someone who never had a youth.”

While throwing up a middle finger today clearly communicates a resounding “f**k you,” in classical society, historians say a middle finger was more of a ribald sexual reference. Proudly displaying a middle finger was usually a joke, an insult or a sexual proposition, Nelson and other classical researchers posit. Morris has said that the middle finger landed in the US with Italian immigrants in the late 19th century. Anti-establishment artists from Joe Strummer of The Clash to Tupac Shakur have pointed a middle finger at the ruling class in their work — and, in famous photos, literally. The singer appeared during Madonna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show and flexed her middle finger toward the camera, prompting the NFL and NBC to apologize.

"Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin has issued a decree that my husband has to be there (in Ukraine). I'm interested to know when he will issue a decree that my husband has to be home," Maria Andreyeva said as campaign workers looked on. She became involved in a heated exchange with a woman who told her that Russian soldiers in Ukraine were defending the motherland and she should pray for them. It showed the depth of anger and despair among some soldiers' families as the war grinds on, with no end in sight after nearly two years. Andreyeva said she did not detect any urgency from the authorities to address the concerns of soldiers' wives, and it was time to step up their campaign.

Houthi followers lift rifles and shout slogans against the U.S.-U.K. during a tribal gathering on January 14, 2024 on the outskirts of Sana'a, Yemen. The remarks came as the U.S. steps up its strikes on Houthi targets and ahead of President Joe Biden's admission to reporters that so far, his administration's military action was not having its intended effect. "When you say working, are they stopping the Houthis?" The White House re-designated the Houthis as a terrorist organization on Jan. 17, after de-listing the group in 2021. As if to validate Biden's comments, the Iran-backed rebel group within hours launched two anti-ship ballistic missiles at a U.S.-owned tanker.

CNN —Attacks by Iranian-backed groups in the Middle East won’t stop until Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza ends, Tehran’s top diplomat warned on Wednesday, as tensions across the region threaten to spiral into wider conflict. Since Hamas’ October 7 attacks on Israel and the Israeli offensive in Gaza that followed, the militant group Hezbollah has engaged in daily confrontations with Israeli forces on the Lebanon-Israel border. Houthi rebels have launched a series of attacks on commercial ships and Western military vessels in the Red Sea, a major artery for international trade. Iran also launched missile strikes in Syria and Pakistan against what it described as terrorist groups who it blamed for deadly attacks inside Iran in recent weeks. Meanwhile, there are fears that the ripple effects of the tensions have begun to extend beyond the Middle East.

Her memoir was, appropriately, entitled: “Are You Tough Enough?”Her son Neil Gorsuch, a Supreme Court justice since 2017, has shown his own brand of defiance and anti-regulatory fervor. In recent years, Justice Gorsuch has voted against regulations that protect the environment, student-debt forgiveness and Covid-19 precautions. He has led calls on the court for reversal of a 1984 Supreme Court decision that gives federal agencies considerable regulatory latitude and that, coincidentally traces to his mother’s tenure. The lawyers who will argue on behalf of the challengers are seasoned appellate advocates who once served as Supreme Court law clerks, as did Solicitor General Prelogar. That argument has prevailed in courts for decades, but the Supreme Court has signaled that it is ready for a new era.

Donald Trump Poised to Win Iowa Caucuses

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—Donald Trump was expected to win the Iowa caucuses Monday night by the largest margin in the history of the first Republican presidential nominating contest, cementing an early victory in his defiant bid to return to the White House. The anticipated dominance of the former president in Iowa, based on recent polls, heightened the importance of second place. Nikki Haley appeared to have a chance to beat Ron DeSantis in a close race for that spot, a prize that would fuel her quest to become the only Trump alternative and a long-shot challenger to the front-runner.

Ron DeSantis, who had staked his campaign on a strong showing in Iowa, came in at a distant second, with 21.2% of the vote. “You helped us get a ticket pushed out of the Hawkeye State,” DeSantis told supporters in Iowa Monday night. And about two-thirds – 66% – of the GOP Iowa voters believe President Joe Biden did not legitimately win the presidency in 2020. The state also prides itself on giving a boost to lesser-known contenders who make the effort to meet one-on-one with Hawkeye State voters. It’s not clear how long DeSantis – who had hoped to win Iowa outright and gain momentum in the race – would be able to continue.

South Africa asked the court to order Israel to halt its blistering air and ground offensive in an interim step. Netanyahu made clear that Israel would ignore orders to halt the fighting, potentially deepening its isolation. Israel argues that ending the war means victory for Hamas, the Islamic militant group that has ruled Gaza since 2007 and is bent on Israel's destruction. In more fallout from the war, the world court this week heard arguments on South Africa's complaint against Israel.
