Opinion | The Great Wheat Price Surge That Sputtered
  + stars: | 2023-08-21 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
I share Ghosh’s concern for the impact of high wheat prices on the poor, but the story is more complicated than greedy speculators versus needy consumers. For one thing, consider this statistic: While speculators were betting on higher wheat prices in the spring of 2022, they’re betting on lower prices now. Managed funds have had a net short position in wheat futures contracts since July 2022, according to data compiled by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. That undermines the narrative that they invariably root for higher prices. Ghosh told me that there was no justification for prices to spike in the spring of 2022 because the market was well supplied with wheat.

When Coy Boggler and Annie Wall started planning their intimate backyard wedding in Phoenix earlier this year, they didn’t know that by July, a record-breaking heat wave would settle over the city for 31 straight days. Mr. Boggler, 47, and Ms. Wall, 41, had rented a tent to keep their guests cool and decided to test it out with three air-conditioning units running, but the temperature inside the tent wouldn’t dip below 93 degrees. “It was pretty miserable,” said Mr. Boggler, a firefighter and paramedic in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The couple were at a loss for what to do when they ran into Chuck Montgomery, a retired deputy fire chief of Glendale, Ariz., and an acquaintance. Mr. Montgomery invited them to move the ceremony to the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting in Phoenix, where Mr. Montgomery is the executive director.

Opinion | The Hidden Risk of Getting Paid in Stock Options

You hear two stories about how private companies raise money to grow. One is that the regulations on them are too restrictive, depriving the nation of innovation and jobs. A new study makes a pretty strong case for the “too loose” story, at least in the case of one class of investors: employees of those private companies. You might not think of employees as investors, but they definitely are if they are paid with stock options, warrants or other forms of equity compensation. Employees can be surprisingly uninformed about the value of the stock options they’re granted, even if the options account for a big share of their compensation.

Mr. Trump may well be correct to assume he has more to lose than gain from these matchups. They are meant to provide voters with a meaty opportunity to judge their options side-by-side, to listen to them field tough questions, to compare their policies and priorities and visions of leadership. It is all the truer for Mr. Trump, who is dominating the Republican herd. Even with Mr. Trump missing, there will be much awkward talk of him. I’m sorry, but we already watched Mr. Carlson give Mr. Trump a thorough bootlicking back in April, not long before Fox News gave Mr. Carlson the boot, in fact, and it was sad.

Dnipro, Ukraine CNN —Ukrainian security services have released to CNN exclusive footage showing the moment in July when they used an experimental sea drone to attack Russia’s bridge to annexed Crimea, providing new details on the attack and warning more such assaults will follow. The attack on July 17 caused damage to the road lanes of the bridge, and, according to Russian officials, killed two civilians. A view of the Crimean Bridge, also known as the Kerch Bridge, the only direct link between Russia and the Crimean peninsula. Maliuk also claimed responsibility for the first Ukrainian attack on the bridge, on October 8, but declined to provide details. He said the July drone attack was the product of months of preparation.

Moisés Caicedo has been sought after by some of the world’s biggest soccer clubs and it is Premier League side Chelsea who has pried the Ecuadorian away from Brighton. Multiple outlets including Sky Sports and the BBC report that it’s a British record fee of £115 million ($146 million) that Chelsea and Brighton have agreed upon. Mike Hewitt/Getty ImagesAs the transfer fee may suggest, the record-breaking move didn’t come without its fair share of complications. Premier League giant Liverpool believed that it would be the team securing the signing of Caicedo after having a £111 million ($141 million) bid for the midfielder accepted just days ago. CNN —With some of the world’s leading soccer players being tempted by the money on offer from Saudi Arabian soccer clubs, the Saudi Pro League’s (SPL) new Director of Football, Michael Emenalo, says the Gulf state is “disrupting the industry, but we are disrupting to enhance. We’re adding value to the industry.”The Saudi Pro League consists of 18 clubs, four of which are 75% owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) – one of the world’s top 10 sovereign wealth funds. Cristiano Ronaldo, N’golo Kanté, Riyad Mahrez and current Ballon d’Or holder Karim Benzema are just a few of players who have joined a variety of SPL clubs over the last few months. That’s true, but there is also a sensible, logical, thoughtful process to making the league better,” said the SPL’s new Director of Football. Darwin made lists of “marry” and “not marry” scenarios, precisely as one would expect from a great scientist. At the bottom of the page is scrawled, “Marry — Marry — Marry Q.E.D.” Which is Latin for “that which was to be demonstrated,” as if he had demonstrated anything except his own susceptibility to love. Future married you will probably be happy, but he or she is a different person. That said, most married people are thankful to their past single selves for deciding to wed. (I certainly am.) But it would make gross output go up because there’s a new B2B purchase involved. It’s at least conceivable that gross output is a leading indicator of the economy. Gross output adjusted for inflation peaked in the same quarter as gross domestic product in 2007, when the deep recession of 2007-9 began. Skousen has created his own version of gross output that’s even bigger than the government’s because it has even more deliberate double counting. His gross output number for this year’s first quarter was more than $58 trillion at an annual rate.

Aug 5 (Reuters) - South Africa coach Jacques Nienaber faces a difficult few days as he finalises his 33-man Rugby World Cup squad after admitting several fringe players put themselves in contention for selection ahead of Tuesday’s announcement. Constant chopping and changing has been a feature of Springbok sides this season as Nienaber cast his net wide. "We have given 38 players the opportunity to play (in four games) and it is going to be a very difficult squad selection meeting. "We had to get our stuff in order to grind out this victory," Nienaber admitted. "The World Cup will be so close and so tight, where any team can beat any other on the day, so discipline will be a big issue."

To an ordinary person, the answer is obviously yes. Lacks, a Black mother of five, was dying of cervical cancer in 1951 when doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore biopsied tissues from her cervix. Whatever the case, cells from the research sample were later found to be highly valuable because they were the first that could divide indefinitely in a laboratory. And cells are “de-identified,” unlike Lacks’s cells, which are named HeLa to this day. What’s still debated is whether people have a legitimate ownership claim in the first place.

On Dec. 9, 2021, at the inaugural Summit for Democracy, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen made a stunning admission: Her country had become the world’s most sought-after shelter for criminals’ money. “In the popular imagination,” she said, according to the prepared text for the virtual event, “the money-laundering capitals of the world are small countries with histories of loose and secretive financial laws. The good news: They’re slowly succeeding. New laws and rules, most of which were in the works before her speech, are stripping away veils of secrecy, making it easier to find and prosecute the bad guys. That’s good for democracy, because nothing corrodes faith in democracy more than the sense that the system is rigged and cheaters prosper.

Opinion | The Economic Case for Taxing Star Athletes
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
OK, it’s time for another round of “Are Star Athletes Overpaid?” I hope to bring some economic theory to bear on this well-worn question. As usual, which side you take will say a lot more about you than it says about the star athletes. It’s never a bad time to argue over athletes’ pay, but now is a particularly good one. The supply of star athletes is extremely limited, so they can demand a high price for their (nonessential) services. The Million Adventure was also a saving program, in that it paid ticket holders a £1 per year until 1710, or a 6.15 percent annual return. Harold Wilson, then the shadow chancellor of the Exchequer, called Premium Bonds a “squalid raffle,” but the British people rushed to buy them. Today about one in three Britons owns Premium Bonds. When companies’ input costs go up for some reason, the prices they charge their customers go up like a rocket. The example most of us can relate to is the retail price of gasoline. At least in the feather scenario, retail prices do go down. Rines said he coined the term “price over volume” in June 2022 to describe how companies were fighting higher costs at the time. “If you’re profit-maximizing you’re going to do that and you should do that,” he told me.

LONDON, July 25 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Spotify (SPOT.N) is caught between the expectations of investors and major music labels. One bullish argument for Spotify’s stock is that higher prices will mean higher margins over time. First, some of Spotify’s customers pay annually, which means the price hike might take a while to come through. He’s locked in a long-term standoff with major labels like Universal Music Group (UMG.AS), which currently grab the overwhelming majority of Spotify’s revenue. Opinion | Sorry, but I Still Think a Recession Is Coming
  + stars: | 2023-07-24 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
More and more economists are dropping their recession calls for the U.S. economy. They are forecasting instead a “soft landing” in which the economy continues to grow, but more slowly. Inflation has come down, lessening the need for the Federal Reserve to cool the economy off with higher interest rates. And the stock market is up, which makes people feel wealthier and in the mood to spend. All that said, I’m sticking with my prediction of a recession.

Wildfires in California and hurricanes in Florida produced lots of claims.
