After Sam Altman's ouster, many are wondering why OpenAI board members booted him. Bedrock Capital's founder, an OpenAI investor, is more concerned with a board member's background. Geoff Lewis said, without offering evidence, he thinks an ex-board member's ties to China should be examined. Instead of debating Toner's reason to oust Altman, Lewis said the "right set of questions" should be aimed at her background. AdvertisementToner, along with Tasha McCauley, the only two female board members of OpenAI, were removed from the board following their votes to vacate Altman from his role as CEO.

Meituan CEO Wang Xing had said on Tuesday that the board had authorised a share buyback of up to $1 billion but it would depend on the company's cash position due to plans to invest in new initiatives and explore overseas investments. "The Board believes that the current financial resources of the company would enable it to implement the share repurchase while maintaining a solid financial position," Meituan said in an exchange filing on Wednesday. The share repurchase will start from Dec. 1. Meituan, China's largest food delivery provider ahead of Alibaba's Ele.me, on Tuesday flagged expectations around fourth-quarter revenue growth for its core food delivery business to slow versus the preceding quarter.

Sam Altman enters his power era

A failed coup at OpenAI saw Sam Altman return as CEO and stronger than ever. The botched coup of OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has seemingly reinforced his power. Even more astonishingly, Altman lacks the one obvious lever of power that keeps founder-CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg in power: controlling shares in his company. "He's really, really, really good at both being understood, but also understanding and asking thoughtful questions." They acted in their best interest," one OpenAI staffer posted on Blind, a social network site where employees can post anonymously.

We now know Sam Altman's returning to the company after being fired, but we are still very confused. AdvertisementSam Altman is set to return as CEO of OpenAI after one of the most confusing weeks in Silicon Valley history. Why was Sam Altman suddenly fired as CEO of OpenAI? Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's chief scientist who was rumored to play a central role in Sam Altman's ousting, was committed to AI safety. Commentators had speculated that Microsoft would be after an OpenAI board seat — or at least a more formalized communication system — in the wake of the fallout.

The ousted leader of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI is returning to the company that fired him late last week, the latest in a saga that has shocked the artificial intelligence industry. San Francisco-based OpenAI said in a statement late Tuesday: “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board" made of former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor, former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo. That emboldened a threatened exodus of nearly all of the startup's 770 employees who signed a letter calling for the board's resignation and Altman's return. “We are encouraged by the changes to the OpenAI board,” Nadella posted on X late Tuesday. The previously unreported letter and AI algorithm was a catalyst that caused the board to oust Altman, the poster child of generative AI, the two sources said. The sources cited the letter as one factor among a longer list of grievances by the board that led to Altman's firing. The researchers who wrote the letter did not immediately respond to requests for comment. According to one of the sources, long-time executive Mira Murati told employees on Wednesday that a letter about the AI breakthrough called Q* (pronounced Q-Star), precipitated the board's actions. Ilya Sutskever was nowhere to be found Tuesday night at the impromptu party OpenAI staff threw to celebrate the return of Sam Altman as CEO. Sutskever was directly involved in Altman's abrupt removal as CEO last Friday by OpenAI's board, of which Sutskever was a member. With Altman now back leading the company, a new smaller board in place, and additional members imminent, staff are unsure if Sutskever will return at all. Another person familiar with both men thinks it is possible Sutskever could return and mend fences, however unlikely. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president and another co-founder who quit in solidarity with Altman, is less magnanimous, the person said.

Sam Altman will return as CEO of OpenAI, the startup said early Wednesday morning on X, formerly known as Twitter. The move follows immense pressure from employees and investors on the board that ousted him less than a week ago. Former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers will join OpenAI's board, the Microsoft-backed startup said, with Taylor holding the chair position. Adam D'Angelo, co-founder and CEO of question-and-answer startup Quora, will remain on the board. That followed an announcement late Sunday that OpenAI had hired ex-Twitch CEO Emmett Shear as Altman's interim replacement.

The ousting of Sam Altman by most of OpenAI's board members appears to have badly backfired. AdvertisementThe dramatic coup by most of OpenAI's board members seems to have epically backfired. Their master plan to topple Sam Altman has failed – and it's cost them their seat at the table. Less than a week after the board pushed him out as CEO, Altman is boomeranging back to the company. His fellow previous board members were Greg Brockman, who was also chair; Ilya Sutskever, Tasha McCauley; Helen Toner; and Altman.

Wait, was Sam Altman fired over ... vibes?

Sam Altman has returned to OpenAI as CEO, but the details of exactly why the board pushed him out in the first place are still a mystery. They said that Altman wasn't candid, and often got his way. From that description, it sounds like the board really couldn't pinpoint exactly what was wrong, other than some sort of ~bad vibes~. (And the board couldn't even name them!) But ultimately, they did have a point: In the end, Altman got his way.

Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT maker OpenAI, attends an open dialogue with students at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan June 12, 2023. The nonprofit board overseeing the maker of the popular ChatGPT chatbot sent shock waves through Silicon Valley on Friday by abruptly firing Chief Executive Sam Altman. The trust that controls the candymaker agreed in 2016 to replace certain board members after the Pennsylvania attorney general challenged the trust's spending. Under OpenAI's bylaws, only directors can remove or elect new board members. Board members can sue other board members, either directly or on behalf of the organization, for failing to exercise their duties, said Reid.

Dollar nurses losses as US rates seen peaking

The index , which measures the dollar against a basket of six major currencies, fell 1.9% last week alongside a big rally in U.S. The yuan also hit a three-month high on the dollar on Monday as the central bank guided it higher. "The dollar continues to struggle, with the dollar index breaking below 104 on Friday and (now) below 103.5 ... as markets decide that the Fed is done," analysts at ANZ said in a note. The Australian dollar was marginally firmer at $0.6561, just below Monday's three-month high of $0.6564. The New Zealand dollar was steady at $0.6040.

Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott on Tuesday offered to match compensation for the hundreds of employees at OpenAI who are threatening to resign following Sam Altman's sudden ouster as CEO. "Know that if needed, you have a role at Microsoft that matches your compensation and advances our collective mission." But, the comment gives some clarity to what Microsoft is willing to pay employees and how many it would hire. Early Monday morning, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that Altman, Greg Brockman, who resigned as OpenAI's president, and their colleagues would join Microsoft as part of a new AI research group. More than 600 OpenAI employees then signed a letter to the company's board and threatened to join their former boss at Microsoft unless the members resigned.

Sam Altman will be in charge of OpenAI's team and products no matter what. So the three remaining OpenAI Board members should explain why they fired him and move on. But, as Business Insider's Alistair Barr has argued, if the goal of the three remaining OpenAI Board members is to save humans from OpenAI's product, it's time for those board members to say so. As a member of humanity, I do thank the three remaining OpenAI members for maybe looking out for us. Even so, both still seem to not know why Sam Altman was really fired. He told OpenAI employees the same thing on Sunday evening, The Verge reported. The workers who did show up were told Altman was booted because he'd been accused of giving two staffers the same project. However the OpenAI drama ends, Altman has promised he'll continue to work with the company "some way or other." OpenAI's board of directors fired Sam Altman, the man behind ChatGPT, in a shock move on Friday. OpenAI's board announced Friday that Altman is out saying it "no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI." The board consisted of six people including OpenAI's president and cofounder Greg Brockman, OpenAI's chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, Adam D'Angelo, Tasha McCauley, Helen Toner and Sam Altman himself. He pointed out that even CEOs are "at-will employees," at US companies, but that OpenAI's board "behaved like a bunch of kids" and "erratically" in this instance. Most of OpenAI's board members don't own shares in the company, including Sam Altman himself who chose not to take any equity in, which ultimately limited his power and influence.

OpenAI's Ilya Sutskever had a dramatic reversal regarding the ousting of his cofounder, Sam Altman. The U-turn came after an emotional plea from cofounder Greg Brockman's wife, the WSJ reported. Anna Brockman — who married Greg Brockman in 2019 — cried and pleaded with Sutskever to change his mind, per the WSJ. With Sam Altman's potential return to OpenAI still in question, one group is also left with a lot of uncertainty: OpenAI's startup customers. Those apprehensions were further worsened Monday, when over 700 of OpenAI's employees threatened to resign if he wasn't reinstated. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Several startup founders told Business Insider that they were considering switching to an open source model like Meta's Llama 2, or Anthropic's Claude.
