Some House Republicans are pushing yet again to revisit the SALT deduction. That State and Local Tax deduction — known as SALT — has proven to be a bipartisan scourge, with Republicans and Democrats alike from impacted areas rallying to restore the tax break to a more generous level. "I remain adamantly opposed to the SALT cap," Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), who spoke out and voted against the legislation that created the SALT cap in 2017, told Insider in a statement. "I promised Long Islanders I would fight tooth and nail to restore our SALT deduction. That risk has been put under the spotlight by the burning car carrier drifting off the Dutch coast. While all logistics companies deal with the risk of EV lithium-ion batteries burning with twice the energy of a normal fire, the maritime industry hasn't kept up with the developing technology and how it creates greater risk, maritime officials and insurers said. At 7:50 a.m. on Monday, July 24, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported that cars driving east through the Lincoln Tunnel to Manhattan were taking 30 minutes to make the crossing, compared with only seven minutes earlier that morning. According to the authority, traffic was actually “light” compared with normal: The tunnel has limited capacity, so during the morning rush, cars always back up on the infamous Helix, the corkscrew approach to the tunnel. If you choose to drive into Manhattan during that rush, you add to that backup. And of course, the congestion you create by driving into the busiest part of Manhattan is just beginning when you’ve exited the tunnel. Your presence slows city buses, the taxis and other for-hire vehicles that make up more than half of Midtown traffic, the delivery trucks that keep the city’s economy functioning.

July 21 (Reuters) - The state of New Jersey sued the Biden administration on Friday seeking to block New York City's congestion pricing plan. Last month, the plan cleared a major roadblock when the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) said the city had adequately assessed how the congestion charge would help the environment. New York City, which has the most congested traffic of any U.S. city, would become the first major city in the U.S. to follow London, which implemented a similar charge in 2003. New York lawmakers approved the plan in 2019 to provide funding to improve mass transit by using tolls to manage traffic in central Manhattan. The toll would generate $1 billion to $1.5 billion a year and support $15 billion in debt financing for mass transit improvement.

A microgrid, a smaller version of the city's electrical power grid, went live last year in the iconic South Side neighborhood of Bronzeville. Despite the growing concern of heat-related illnesses and climate change, people have far fewer protections from power shutoffs during the summer than they do in the winter. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP, has about $6 billion in funds for fiscal 2023, which runs through September. The association is calling on Congress to provide an additional $3 billion for cooling assistance this summer, which would help about 6 million households. And it is asking utilities to voluntarily suspend shutoffs this summer for those behind on their bills. Florida Power & Light, for instance, has a longstanding policy that it won’t disconnect customers if it’s 95 degrees or higher.

The $17.2 billion Hudson Tunnel Project will repair an existing tunnel and build a new one for passenger railroad Amtrak and state commuter lines between New Jersey and Manhattan. The 112-year-old rail tunnel carries 200,000 passenger trips per day on New Jersey Transit and Amtrak along the Northeast Corridor. In 2010, then-New Jersey Governor Chris Christie pulled state funding for the tunnel project. In all, some 24 trains per hour and 200,000 people daily (at pre-pandemic levels) pass through the tunnel, according to Amtrak. Two firefighters died while working to extinguish a raging fire Wednesday aboard an Italian cargo ship that was loading automobiles at Port Newark in New Jersey, the authorities said. The firefighters “made an attempt to extinguish the fire and, because of the intense heat, they got pushed back out of the area where the initial fire was,” Chief Rufus Jackson of the Newark Fire Department said in a news conference early Thursday. WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats on Thursday urged PayPal and Cash App to better protect users of their peer-to-peer payment applications from fraud. The letters were sent to PayPal president and CEO Dan Shulman and Cash App CEO Brian Grassadonia. PayPal, Venmo and Cash App did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNBC. Cash App transactions also brought in over $203 billion in inflows among 51 million monthly users as of December 2022, according to a Block annual report. The letter is part of an ongoing inquiry into P2P platform consumer safety spearheaded by Warren over the past several years.
