CNN —House Republicans unloaded a barrage of criticism directed toward FBI Director Christopher Wray Wednesday, outlining a litany of complaints while Wray testified before the House Judiciary Committee. Chairman Jim Jordan opened the hearing launching into a wide array of attacks on the FBI. “House Republicans will attack the FBI for having had the audacity to treat Donald Trump like any other citizen. FBI Director Christopher Wray is sworn in prior to testifying before a House Judiciary Committee hearing. “We did stand up a whole dedicated unit to focus on threats to FBI, individuals, FBI employees and FBI facilities because of the uptick that we saw over that time period,” Wray said.

Americans still worry more about terrorism and other foreign policy issues than about China. “That’s percolated into the general public,” said Richard Herrmann, an Ohio State University professor who studies international relations and public opinion. A feedback loopSouring public opinion, in turn, may worsen U.S.-China relations. That might seem surprising; most Americans don’t pay that much attention to foreign policy, which is typically far removed from their daily lives. And once public opinion on a foreign policy issue calcifies, as it increasingly has on China, political leaders often pay attention to it.

CNN —Lordstown Motors filed for bankruptcy protection Tuesday, put itself up for sale, and announced a lawsuit against Foxconn, accusing its biggest shareholder and former partner of setting out to “destroy” its business. In 2021, it purchased an Ohio factory that Lordstown Motors had itself bought from General Motors in 2019. Lordstown Motors headquarters seen in Lordstown, Ohio in 2021. Circuit Court of Appeals said the law adopted last year by Westchester County, New York, was valid under a 2000 Supreme Court ruling that rejected a challenge to a similar law in Colorado. The court said it was bound to follow that ruling unless the Supreme Court expressly overturns it. The Supreme Court in a 2014 case struck down a Massachusetts law establishing a 35-foot buffer zone around abortion clinics, but the court did not mention the Hill decision. Last year, an Ohio-based U.S. appeals court temporarily blocked a Kentucky county's 10-foot buffer zone, citing the 2014 Supreme Court decision. A Philadelphia-based appeals court is currently considering a challenge to a 20-foot buffer zone adopted by Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

June 19 (Reuters) - Abortion rights advocates and opponents are set to mark this week's one-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that had legalized the procedure nationwide with events to rally voters and highlight the ongoing fights over access. Abortion rights supporters did manage in some states to fight off new proposed restrictions or codify abortion protections. Strategists in both parties have attributed Democratic strength at the polls at least in part to higher support from women who back abortion rights. Democratic President Joe Biden, an abortion rights supporter, is seeking re-election. The biggest expansions of abortion rights over the past year occurred in states including Michigan and Minnesota where Democrats control both the legislature and the governor's office, Reynolds said.

Currently, companies importing packages valued under $800 are not charged duties, taxes or fees to the United States government. A bill introduced Thursday looks to bar countries such as China and Russia, which are considered “nonmarket economies,” from being eligible to use this trade law. Some online retailers have financially benefited from the law because they ship small batches of orders directly to shoppers from overseas. Its $11 smock dresses and $6 floral print bikinis are shipped directly to shoppers, allowing it to bypass any import fees. That could lead to more fees at customs as it directs bulks of goods to its warehouses before going to consumers.

An Airbnb host photographed the checkout chore list at an Ohio VRBO she stayed in this month. During a recent stay in home she booked via vacation-rental site VRBO in Cleveland, Ohio, she encountered a list of chores to be completed before checkout. She photographed the sign and shared it with other short-term-rental hosts on Facebook, where her post received hundreds of comments. We just weren't going to do hours and hours of laundry. I understand it's impossible for a cleaning person to do hours and hours of laundry in a single day.
House Republicans have proposed deep spending cuts in exchange for increasing the debt limit. The White House says these cuts would leave thousands of children more vulnerable to lead poisoning. The cuts would reduce funding for HUD, which helps mitigate housing-related lead poisoning. The White House said this would mean cutting funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development's lead mitigation efforts. The funding cuts would also heavily impact other housing assistance programs for low-income families, including taking housing vouchers from more than 800,000 households, the White House said.
There are a host of complicated issues in the solar market, including some contentious politics. Last year, the growth of residential solar in the U.S. boomed. It won't repeat that in 2023, but will remain a large part of the solar market. Ohio, for example, has a state program that offers a reduced rate on a solar loan with certain lenders. GoodLeap (26% of the residential solar market) was No.
The US could breach the debt ceiling and run out of money to pay its debts as soon as June 1. A White House official previously told Insider that Biden would stress that Congress "must take action to avoid default without conditions." Additionally, Wall Street's response to the debt-ceiling crisis is different this time around. Even so, he added, this debt-ceiling crisis "seems much more dangerous" than the ones from the Obama years. Biden has options to avoid a debt-ceiling crisis that don't involve CongressTuesday's meeting between Biden and congressional leadership aims to break through the logjam.
The Biden Administration recently announced nearly half a billion dollars from both the Inflation Reduction and Infrastructure laws would go toward clean energy projects at former coal mines. Abandoned coal mines generally fill with water when the mining has ceased. Geothermal energy is not new, but taking it from abandoned coal mines is not yet common, especially in the United States. Geothermal energy from coal mines can be used not only to heat homes and buildings, but also to cool them. Kruse-Daniels said that while it is a relatively inexpensive form of clean energy, the location and legacy may be liabilities.
House Republicans' debt ceiling bill would cut significant funding from federal housing services. HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge said the agency would suffer "the most devastating impacts in HUD's history" if the funding cuts in the bill are made law. He went on, "It's being positioned as congressional Republicans are heartless because they want to pass these spending cuts. "The House bill reduces spending to the levels we had in 2022. The last I checked, 2022 was not a horrid apocalypse sweeping across our country," Cruz told Insider on Wednesday.
In 2022, Amazon bought 10.9 gigawatts of clean power, making it the largest corporate buyer of renewable power in the world, according to data from the market research company BloombergNEF. It's also more than four times the amount of clean energy that the second-largest purchaser of clean power, Facebook parent company Meta , bought in 2022. Since 2019, Amazon has scaled from having one gigawatt of renewable energy to more than 20 gigawatts of publicly announced renewable power. Amazon is focused on building new wind and solar projects, Daitch told CNBC. But that's really more of a bridging solution and not our core strategy, which is around enabling new wind and solar projects," Daitch said.
There are thousands of homes left vacant from abandonment or foreclosure in Ohio. Tony Kelly said the demolitions improved his area, from luring residents to lifting home values. At the end of 2019, Attom found, Ohio was among the states with the highest number of vacant homes, with 3.8 million. Mike DeWine said in a 2021 statement announcing the Ohio Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program. "The demolitions helped to raise property values in the city, making the town more attractive to purchase and build houses," he said.
With that arrangement apparently unraveling, Lordstown could face bankruptcy, according to the truck maker. In 2021, it purchased an Ohio factory that Lordstown Motors had, itself, bought from General Motors in 2019. According to papers Lordstown Motors filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, Foxconn has claimed that Lordstown has not met the agreed- upon requirements and, so, Foxconn is refusing to follow through with agreed-upon future investments. In April, Lordstown Motors received a letter from Nasdaq notifying the company that, because of its low stock price, the company was in danger of being delisted from the exchange. Because of that letter, according to Lordstown, Foxconn claimed the company had not met the investment agreements.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —When the presidents of the United States and South Korea this week announced a landmark deal to deter North Korean aggression, one element of the pact stood out. Here’s what you need to know about the submarine and why it’s heading to South Korea. The Nuclear Threat Initiative at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies estimates that each Trident missile can carry four nuclear warheads, meaning each US ballistic missile submarine could be carrying about 80 nuclear warheads. One arriving in South Korea on a port visit – which must be arranged 24 to 48 hours in advance – would be far more visible, giving North Korea an advantage, Schuster said. Kim’s threats have prompted some in South Korea to call for Seoul to become a nuclear-armed power itself.

The Inflation Reduction Act, which passed last year without a single Republican vote, is a signature Biden accomplishment and offers $369 billion investment to address climate change. This includes $270 billion in tax incentives. Republicans have portrayed the tax credits as a distortion of the free market that gives unfair advantage to clean-energy producers over fossil fuels. Frisone, of CZAR-Power, said he plans to call Republican officeholders to make his case, adding, "This is a political stunt -- why are we doing it?"

DETROIT, April 21 (Reuters) - United Auto Workers union President Shawn Fain said on Friday there is "no excuse" for Detroit's automakers to set up electric vehicle operations and ventures that are not unionized. Detroit automakers have set up several U.S. joint venture battery factories that are not covered by their current agreements with the UAW. Fain said workers at joint venture battery plants should earn higher wages than production workers at older Detroit Three factories. "I look forward to bring that work under the UAW," Fain said. The UAW president said workers displaced as factories dedicated to combustion vehicle technology lose work should have a right to get jobs at joint venture factories.
