Jerusalem CNN —Twenty-one Israeli soldiers were killed during fighting in southern Gaza on Monday, the military said, in the biggest single loss of life for Israeli troops inside the battered enclave since the war with Hamas began. In a televised statement Tuesday, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said two buildings collapsed on the soldiers after being hit by an RPG during a military operation. Before the incident on Monday, the military said 198 Israeli soldiers had died since operations in Gaza began. In recent weeks, the Israeli military’s main focus has been in southern Gaza, with intense fighting around the city of Khan Younis. On Monday, the Hamas-controlled health ministry in Gaza said the number of Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 7 has risen to 25,295, with at least 63,000 injuries recorded.

The Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. (ADM) grain facility in Mendota, Illinois, U.S.Shares of Archer-Daniels-Midland plunged 24% on Monday, its biggest one-day drop since 1929, after CFO Vikram Luthar was placed on administrative leave as the company investigates accounting practices at its Nutrition segment. The probe brings more uncertainty to ADM's high-margin Nutrition segment, which is under pressure due to weak demand for meat alternatives and other products as well as downtime at a large soy processing facility. The Nutrition segment, however, has not performed well in recent quarters. "First and foremost, understanding the true scope of potential accounting irregularities and their impact on Nutrition segment revenues/margins will be critical," said Goldman Sachs analyst Adam Samuelson. JERUSALEM (AP) — Iran is “very directly involved” in ship attacks that Yemen's Houthi rebels have carried out during Israel's war against Hamas, the U.S. Navy's top Mideast commander told The Associated Press on Monday. The tempo of Houthi attacks on shipping appears to have slowed for the time being as the U.S. and its allies have increased their naval patrols in the region. A series of attacks blamed on Iran and ship seizures by Tehran followed the collapse of Iran's nuclear deal with world powers. However, Cooper maintained Iran had been directly fueling the Houthi attacks on shipping. CNN —Medicine for Israeli hostages and Palestinians has entered Gaza, Qatar said Wednesday, after the Gulf nation brokered a deal between Israel and Hamas to provide vital medication to the war-torn enclave. The agreement mediated by Qatar Tuesday will see medication delivered to Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza in exchange for medicine and humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians. Osama Hamdan, a Lebanon-based Hamas official, said the agreement was dependent on there being enough medication for Palestinians in Gaza in addition to the Israeli hostages. Hamas has stipulated that for every box of medication given to the hostages, Palestinians in Gaza must receive 1,000 boxes. However, the Israeli military said it does “not have the ability to guarantee” that medicine will reach the hostages.

Hamas said on Monday that two of the hostages captured on Oct. 7 had been killed in Israeli airstrikes and released images that appeared to show their bodies, but the Israeli military cast doubt on the claim. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, chief spokesman for the Israeli military, said at a press briefing that at least one of the hostages was not killed by its forces. At the same time, the videos appeared to demonstrate the leverage which Hamas can exert on Israeli society through the hostages. Previous videos released by Hamas about the hostages have omitted or distorted crucial details. She said that Hamas fighters dug her and Mr. Svirsky out but that Mr. Sharabi had been killed.

Opinion | What America’s Eating Affects Its Water Supply
  + stars: | 2024-01-15 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “America’s Diet Is Feeding a Groundwater Crisis” (“Uncharted Waters” series, front page, Dec. 30):The world has been making meat basically the same way for about 10,000 years, by feeding crops to animals, so that humans can eat animals. This method of meat production is inefficient, requiring vast quantities of land and water, and shifting crop production to lower-value crops for animal feed from high-value crops for human consumption. Plant-based and cultivated meat use far less land and water, and they have a host of other benefits. The Center for Strategic and International Studies released a report in May documenting how these “alternative proteins” can create opportunities for farmers, jobs in the heartland, more choices for consumers and robust export markets. Like any more efficient production method, these new ways of making meat are a win-win for industry, which is why we’re seeing leadership in these sectors from major meat and food companies including ADM (Archer-Daniels-Midland), Cargill, Tyson, Nestle and JBS.

CNN —Friends and relatives gathered Monday to mourn the death of Yuval Castleman, the Israeli civilian who responded to a deadly terror attack in Jerusalem, shooting and killing the perpetrators before he himself was shot dead by an Israeli reservist soldier. Castleman, a former police officer, was driving to work Thursday when he saw two gunmen open fire at a bus stop in Jerusalem. Amid a barrage of airstrikes, Israel sharply expanded its evacuation orders in the Gaza Strip on Sunday in preparation for an expected ground invasion in the southern part of the territory. The new orders, coming three days after the collapse of a weeklong truce, sowed confusion and fear among Gaza residents, some of whom have already been displaced at least once before. Images from Gaza on Sunday showed plumes of dark smoke rising above a rubble-covered landscape and bloodied children wailing in dust-covered hospital wards. Mourners stood beside rows of bodies wrapped in white sheets. Late Sunday night, a military spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said Israel “continues and expands its ground operations against Hamas strongholds all across the Gaza Strip,” but did not elaborate.

HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Navy estimates it will cost $1.5 million to salvage a jet plane that crashed on a coral reef in Hawaii nearly two weeks ago, officials said Saturday. The Navy plans to use inflatable cylinders to lift and roll the jet plane off the reef where it crashed on Nov. 20. Hawaii state officials are due to examine the reef for damage once the plane is removed. The Navy considered floating the jet within range of a crane on the runway and then lifting the plane onto land. The Bibas family said in a statement that they hoped the claims would be “refuted by military officials,” and thanked the Israeli public for its support. The three — Shiri Bibas, 32; Ariel Bibas, 4; and Kfir Bibas, 10 months old — were among the roughly 240 people taken hostage by Hamas and other groups on Oct. 7. On Wednesday morning, Yifat Zailer, Ms. Bibas’s cousin, described waiting for the lists of hostages set to be freed as “this horrible mathematical equation.”“Our hearts skip a beat every time,” Ms. Zailer said. “It’s really hard to breathe.”When the cease-fire was extended on Monday, Ms. Zailer found herself losing a sense of time. On Monday, Admiral Hagari said the Bibas family was being held not by Hamas, but by other armed groups in Gaza.

The Israeli prime minister’s office said the released hostages included a 12-year-old boy and multiple members of four other families. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli government, which had offered to extend the pause by one day for every additional 10 hostages released. Under the initial deal, Hamas agreed to release 50 women and children taken hostage during the Oct. 7 attack. In return, Israel agreed to free 150 women and minors held in Israeli jails, among other terms. DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israeli troops battled Palestinian militants in a dense, urban refugee camp on Tuesday as they expanded operations across northern Gaza, where residents have been without electricity, water or access to humanitarian aid for weeks. Israeli forces cut off the north in their ground invasion late last month, though tens of thousands have since fled south through corridors announced by the military.
