BRUSSELS, June 28 (Reuters) - Advent-owned NielsenIQ is set to secure EU antitrust clearance for its proposed acquisition of German market research firm GfK on the condition GfK sells its consumer panel business, people familiar with the matter said. U.S. consumer market research company NielsenIQ, which is present in more than 90 markets covering more than 90% of the world's population, announced the deal a year ago. GfK's consumer panel business covers 122,500 households and 1,800 retailers, with its data showing patterns, trends and predictions. The European Commission, which is scheduled to complete its preliminary review of the deal by July 4, declined to comment. The list includes French peer Ipsos, the UK's Kantar, YouGov, Dynata, Circana, Omnicon Group, Publicis Group, Cision and private equity firms such as H.I.G.

ADL's fifth such annual survey showed that reports of online hate and harassment over the last 12 months increased within almost every demographic group. About 52% of the survey responders reported having faced online harassment, compared to 40% in the survey's previous year. "We're confronted with record levels of hate across the internet, hate that too often turns into real violence and danger in our communities," said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt, urging tech and social media platforms to do more to tackle online hate. Excluding transgender people, 47% of the LGBTQ+ community respondents reported online harassment. Earlier this month, President Joe Biden warned about "ugly" attacks from "hysterical" people who he said were targeting LGBTQ Americans, especially transgender youth.

An array of startups offers second-life energy storage using old EV batteries. The second-life energy storage idea is in theory simple. The problem is a lack of old EV batteries that shows no sign of easing. He has just sold the car for $3,000 to pay down credit card debt, but wants another used EV. Commercial vehicles provide the best hope thus far for second-life batteries, industry officials said.

Americans are still joining the Great Resignation in high numbers. The typical job hopper is young and seeking higher pay and better job security. With job openings also well above pre-pandemic levels, the Great Resignation could persist in the months to come. In some ways, the participants in the Great Resignation — and the rewards of joining it — haven't changed much over the past few years, but in other ways, the landscape has changed considerably. From age to industry to pay bump, here's the profile of today's typical Great Resigner.

June 16 (Reuters) - Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) will face investors hungry for answers at its capital markets day next Wednesday on how it will achieve high cost-cutting targets and whether it will heed their calls for an independent audit of its co-owned Xinjiang plant. "The 21 June CMD is an opportunity to reset a fraught relationship with investors, a challenging exercise," Jefferies wrote in a note on Friday. Investors also demanded that Volkswagen conduct an independent audit of the Urumqi plant, which executives have is only possible with the agreement of joint venture partner SAIC (600104.SS). Alongside targets, investors needed details on how the carmaker expects to make its EV production more cost-effective, Daniel Roeska of Bernstein Research wrote in a note on Thursday. "The risk is that instead we see more punchy earnings and volume targets, with little to support them," he added.

Companies Tesla Inc FollowBERLIN, June 15 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) will hire fewer temporary workers at its plant outside Berlin than it did in its ramp-up phase and refrain from Saturday shifts, but it is still on track to achieve its production targets, the company said on Thursday. The electric carmaker maker has offered discounts of up to 3,490 euros ($3,842) for a China-made Model 3 and 3,660 euros ($4,029) for a Berlin-made Model Y, according to Tesla Info's list of global inventory. Tesla CEO Elon Musk told shareholders last month that the company would try advertising for the first time, in a move seen by analysts as a means to drum up demand. French President Emmanuel Macron will meet Musk on Friday, the second time in just over a month, to promote France as a possible site for a second Tesla factory in Europe. Tata Consultancy Services, India's largest IT firm, saw more female employees quit the past year. The company said it felt this change was influenced by its decision to scrap remote work. India's largest IT firm faced an unexpected consequence after scrapping its remote working policies: seeing a higher level of female employees quit. There are over 220,000 women at the firm, making up about 35.7% of the company's workforce according to the report. A YouGov poll last year found that 57% of working women in the US said that remote working is important in a job, versus 44% of men.

Journalists rank behind influencers in driving news conversation on TikTok and other younger social platforms. Journalists are getting outflanked by influencers when it comes to reaching audiences around news topics on younger-skewing platforms like TikTok and Snapchat. But "personalities" won out on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube (by a smaller margin). While TikTok was the fastest-growing network in the Reuters report, Facebook remained the most important overall, with 28% of consumers using it for news in the last week. The Reuters report also found a difference in the topics that resonated on different platforms, which could hinder the efforts of some journalists and news organizations.

Former US President Donald Trump arrives to deliver remarks at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster, New Jersey, on June 13, 2023. That sort of comment is further than where many of Trump's rivals for the GOP presidential nomination will go publicly. Still, even out in the open, there are indications that they believe this federal indictment is far more serious than the last one. But the Trump indictment took over, with participants expressing deep concern about backlash and the party's fracturing beyond repair. On one hand, if Trump's GOP rivals blast him, they risk further alienating his committed GOP supporters.

BERLIN, June 13 (Reuters) - German demand for photovoltaic power systems is expected to grow at a double-digit rate this year with solar storage system installations by mid-year topping 2022's total, the BSW solar power association said on Tuesday. Solar power systems are booming in Europe's biggest economy as consumers seek alternatives to expensive fossil fuels following a drop in Russian supply last year. BSW said it expected new solar power installed capacity this year to be between 9 to 11 gigawatts (GW), up from 7.4 GW in 2022, meaning an increase of up to 49%. A total output of 5.3 GW of solar power systems were installed in 2021. Annual solar parks production currently covers more than 10% of the country's electricity needs, BSW said, adding solar power expansion on commercial buildings was still weak compared to residential and solar parks.

How Democrats Can Win Workers

Today, I’ll be writing about what Democrats might do about the problem, focusing on a new YouGov poll, conducted as part of the Center for Working-Class Politics study. A key point is that even modest shifts in the working-class vote can decide elections. If President Biden wins 50 percent of the non-college vote next year, he will almost certainly be re-elected. But candidate messages that explicitly mentioned race were unpopular. Democrats who have won difficult recent elections, including both progressives and moderates, have often presented a blue-collar image.

CNN —Republican Chris Christie is hoping the second time’s the charm when it comes to White House runs. He’s not alone among the major Republican contenders polling south of 5% on average – seven others also fit the description. It’s not unheard of for candidates polling below 5% (or even at 1%) at this point in the cycle to win their party’s nomination. lies with the two candidates polling above 5%: former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Upon officially declaring his bid, he jumped into the double digits in the Republican horserace and saw his unfavorable ratings decline.

The roar of outrage from Republican leaders to that indictment restored Trump’s grip on the party after frustration over his role in the GOP’s disappointing 2022 midterm elections had loosened it. Repeating the pattern from other moments of maximum threat to Trump, the GOP response has been marked by a pronounced communications imbalance. (The poll was conducted after Trump’s indictment in Manhattan but before the recent federal charges.) At another point Trump insisted, “These criminals cannot be rewarded” – presumably by frightening Republican voters away from nominating him. Yet, Robinson believes, by echoing Trump’s claims of unfair treatment, the other candidates are encouraging Republican voters to accept his framing of the race.

At the North Carolina State GOP Convention on Saturday, on his first campaign swing since news of the federal indictment, Trump escalated his assault on America’s system of justice. They’re trying to win the classified documents case in a court of public opinion – in a way that may influence a future jury – long before the ex-president faces a trial. Not to mention, the law does not require documents to be classified for a crime to have been committed. And many Democrats blamed ex-FBI Chief James Comey’s public statements in the case days before the 2016 election for helping to elect Trump. “(What) the Democrats are doing to Trump, it’s just too – it has nothing to do with running the country,” she said.

The arrest is deeply embarrassing for the SNP, which has dominated Scottish politics for most of the last two decades. Sturgeon stood down earlier this year and support for the party and its aim of independence has since dropped. "Nicola Sturgeon has today, Sunday 11th June, by arrangement with Police Scotland, attended an interview where she was to be arrested and questioned," a spokesperson for Sturgeon said. Opposition parties have accused the SNP of being mired in scandal and too focused on independence to govern Scotland properly. The Labour Party's Scotland spokesperson Ian Murray said there was a culture of "secrecy and cover-up" in the SNP.

Trump's prior indictment in New York on charges alleging falsification of business documents didn't move the political needle much. But there is recent polling that explains what Americans think about the prospect of Trump being charged with crimes, including some specifically about an indictment related to his handling of classified documents. Meanwhile, 63% of Americans, called "taking highly classified documents from the White House and obstructing efforts to retrieve them" a serious crime. Ahead of Trump's indictment in Manhattan, Quinnipiac University asked Americans whether they thought criminal charges, not an indictment, should disqualify Trump from running. A slim majority of all voters, 52%, said that in his New York indictment, Trump has been treated like anyone else accused of those same crimes and hasn't been unfairly targeted.

"Protests have been going on for six months, it's unprecedented," Sophie Binet, the new leader of the hardline CGT union said on BFM TV. "There's a lot of anger but also fatigue," she said, adding that strikers were feeling the pinch on paychecks. Between 400,000 and 600,000 people are expected to turn out at protests across France, authorities said, which would be down from more than a million who took part in marches at the height of the pension protests earlier this year. But unions hope a big protest turnout could pressure lawmakers into reviewing the bill anyway and holding a vote. Opposition lawmakers, meanwhile, say the bill being rejected would revive public anger, branding any such move "antidemocratic".

Does British tourism really need the royal family?
  + stars: | 2023-05-15 | by ( Ross Bennett-Cook | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Love them or loathe them, the royal family are up there with red telephone boxes and scones when it comes to images of Britishness. The royal family does bring tourism to the UK. But if the royal family were to disappear, would the UK’s tourism industry suddenly implode? And while the international perception of Britain is certainly intertwined with the royal family, this does not tell us whether a reigning royal family is necessary for tourism. After all, the history surrounding the monarchy and places associated with them would still be here even if the royal family was not.
Companies National Indigenous Australians Agency FollowSYDNEY, May 11 (Reuters) - Two key Australian Indigenous leaders opposed to a proposal to constitutionally recognise the country's Aboriginal and Torres Island people joined forces on Thursday in an effort to strengthen their campaign ahead of a referendum later this year. A YouGov poll out last month showed 83% of Indigenous Australians support the referendum, while a wider poll by the Guardian said 60% of Australians will vote for it. Any constitutional alterations in Australia require a national referendum. To succeed, a referendum requires a national majority of votes as well as a majority of votes in at least four of the six states. The conservative Liberal-National opposition coalition will oppose the national vote.
Follow for live updates on the Trump CNN town hall meeting. Those objections intensified on Tuesday after Mr. Trump was found liable for the sexual abuse and defamation of the writer E. Jean Carroll. And foes of Mr. Trump will cringe at seeing him on air at all. He is backed by David Zaslav, the Warner chief executive, who has batted away objections to Wednesday’s Trump town hall. There is the awkward fact that Mr. Trump still has a pending $475 million defamation lawsuit against the network.
But on Wednesday evening, Donald Trump will elbow his way back into the campaign mainstream. At a town hall event in New Hampshire hosted by CNN, the former president will field questions from audience members and the network anchor Kaitlan Collins. The event will be live, leaving Mr. Trump more or less free to inject his lies straight into viewers’ veins. Short answer: We have in fact learned much about Mr. Trump and the threat he poses to American democracy. Nothing that Mr. Trump has done so far legally prevents him from pursuing, or serving, another term in the White House.
