The laundry machines are in the basement, which is a common area. The problem is that the basement is stuffed with junk — which I was willing to put up with, but now I’ve seen a rat nosing around. But even though the law is on your side, getting landlords and management companies to respond isn’t always easy. Start with a letter to your landlord and management company describing the conditions in the basement and the problems the junk creates. Keep copies of your letter, as well as any response that you receive, and take photos documenting the problem.

If you refer to “Maestro” as a biopic, expect a sternly worded email from the movie’s reps. It’s also true that “Maestro” doesn’t play by traditional biopic rules. What’s up with that fake nose? But when the film flashes back to Bernstein as a young man, the prosthetic proves intermittently distracting. It’s both too much and not enough: Unlike the fake nose in “The Hours,” which really did render Nicole Kidman unrecognizable, young Bernstein just looks like Bradley Cooper wearing a big beak.

REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni Acquire Licensing RightsVENICE, Sept 2 (Reuters) - The make-up artist for Bradley Cooper's Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro" apologised on Saturday for offending people by giving the lead character a prosthetic nose, but said he only wanted authenticity. When the first trailer of the film surfaced last month, some critics complained that the nose pandered to Jewish stereotypes. Bernstein died in 1990 but his adult children have defended the make-up in the film, saying their father had had a "nice, big nose". But his make-up designer Kazu Hiro met the press and said he was surprised by the nose criticism. It is one of 23 movies competing for the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, which runs until Sept. 9.

Both men say they hope to pull the company back from the brink and continue without Mr. Chapski, whom they hired as a financial adviser in 2011 and made a partner in 2016. The founders continued to develop new products and marketing efforts, but Mr. Chapski effectively ran the business. Mr. Quint is seeking at least $4 million, claiming damages arising from breach of contract, fiduciary irresponsibility and “willful misconduct” by Mr. Chapski. Mr. Quint said in an interview that Mr. Chapski has maintained his lifestyle even as the company has descended into debt. Idalia is expected to intensify into a hurricane Monday and make landfall on Wednesday morning near the Big Bend of Florida as a dangerous major hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. As the storm intensifies, “life-threatening storm surge and dangerous winds” are “becoming increasingly likely for portions of Florida,” the hurricane center said early Monday. “Idalia has been moving erratically and is nearly stationary,” the hurricane center added. Tropical storm conditions are possible in the Dry Tortugas beginning late Monday and along the Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday. The government of Cuba has upgraded the tropical storm warning for Pinar del Rio to a hurricane warning.

Like many college graduates, Hattie Kolp needed two major things: a job and somewhere to live. Born and raised in New York, Ms. Kolp always knew she’d be back. So with no money and no job, she did what any other 20-something would do: She moved back in with her parents. And Ms. Kolp is still there.

ImageSuitcase and TromboneDear Diary:Returning from a trip when I was a poor college student living on the Upper West Side, I decided to take mass transit home from the airport. Boarding a bus for the last leg of the trip home, which in those days was a two-hour ordeal, I struggled my way on, dragging my suitcase and trombone. A man sitting near the door lost his patience and began to yell at me for holding up the bus. Embarrassment washed over me as I continued to struggle. Suddenly, I heard a woman a few seats away yell out in a commanding voice.

Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi told The Wall Street Journal that the worst part of Uber driving was food delivery. The CEO's thoughts come after he moonlit as an Uber driver to understand why hiring dipped. When asked the most nightmarish rider experience he had as an Uber driver, Khosrowshahi said that it wasn't the riders that gave him issues — it was delivering food. "I was trying to deliver food and I couldn't find where to drop it off," Khosrowshahi told The Wall Street Journal. Uber drivers have also complained about riders being loud and obnoxious, slamming doors, leaving crumbs on the seats, and running late.

Local businesses on Maui say they're suffering as tourism falls following deadly wildfires. Coconut's Fish Cafe owner Michael Phillips told Insider that "Maui is in mourning" following the devastating wildfires that have killed at least 114 people and left thousands homeless. He said "tourists have to start coming back soon" before the local economy suffered long-term harm. The business owner said he'd already had to close one restaurant and make layoffs as it was losing $5,000 a day. "We ask that they shop at local small businesses and eat at local restaurants," she said.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. In the US, prosecutors are given enormous power to apply the law as they see fit, choosing who to charge and what to charge them with. Evidence of their misdeeds can secure convictions and allow for strict sentences that otherwise couldn’t be imposed. Bill Bramhall/Tribune Content AgencyThe 97-page indictment unveiled by Willis last week cites a lot more evidence than could be arrayed against a sandwich served at lunch. “We are the chief law enforcement officers in each jurisdiction, with the weighty power to deprive others of their freedom,” Aronberg observed.

CNN —Arguably the least interesting thing about Leonard Bernstein — the legendary conductor and composer now being played by Bradley Cooper in an upcoming Netflix biopic called “Maestro”— was his nose. However, any non-Jewish person putting on a fake nose in order to portray a Jew is colliding with a grim history. I think we can and must discern between Cooper’s nose prosthesis and, for example, the virulent antisemitism embedded in the works of beloved children’s author Roald Dahl. I don’t want to watch “Maestro.” I don’t really care whether you do, so long as you respect my feelings. You cannot have a non-Jewish actor putting on a fake nose in order to play a Jew and not at least pause for a moment to consider the history.

Leonard Bernstein’s three children came to the defense of the actor and director Bradley Cooper on Wednesday after he drew fresh criticism for wearing a large prosthetic nose in his portrayal of the midcentury American composer and conductor, who was Jewish, in the forthcoming movie “Maestro.”When the makeup was first revealed last year, some questioned the decision by Cooper, who is not Jewish, to play Bernstein, who died in 1990. In the Netflix film, he stars opposite Carey Mulligan as Bernstein’s wife, Felicia Montealegre Bernstein. The debut of a teaser trailer on Tuesday prompted further discussion on social media about both the prosthesis, which critics said played into an antisemitic trope, and about whether an actor who is Jewish should instead have been cast to play Bernstein, the “West Side Story” composer and music director of the New York Philharmonic.

One of my favorite meals at La Caridad 78 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, before it closed in 2020, was pork egg foo young, alongside yellow rice, black beans and a platter of maduros. Once, afterward, I paused on my way back to the newsroom to sit on a park bench. Kay Chun has a terrific new recipe for egg foo young (above) that I’ll dress up with roast pork from the takeout shop and serve with rice augmented with Sazón seasoning, along with Cuban black beans and these lovely fried sweet plantains. This meal approximates my old lunchtime joy with no need to sleep in public. I just clean up the kitchen and pitch into bed.

Many cell towers have backup power generators but they have limited capacity to keep towers running. Cell service is down. Why cell phone service went downAlthough strong winds can sometimes threaten cell towers, most are strong enough to handle the worst that even a Category 5 hurricane can bring. “When the fires get too close to cell sites, they will obviously burn equipment, antennas, and feedlines,” said Glenn O’Donnell, VP of research at market research firm Forrester. Cell towers have backup technology built in, but this is typically done through optical fiber cables or microwave (wireless) links, according to Dimitris Mavrakis, senior researcher at ABI Research.
