Four years ago, a billionaire tech executive leading one of the world’s pre-eminent social platforms laid out a vision to transform it into an app that could do it all. The idea was akin to that of an “everything app” espoused recently by Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter. But the dream belonged to Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and chief executive of Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Mr. Zuckerberg tried it. So did Dara Khosrowshahi, the chief executive of Uber.

The U.S. has been actively looking to restrict Chinese companies' access to many U.S.-developed technologies related to AI, particularly in the area of AI semiconductors. Alibaba Cloud did not respond to a request for comment. Alibaba and its peers such as Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) have been aggressively developing their own AI models in recent months.

It's a move that is set to give Chinese businesses first-hand access to Meta's free AI model, Reuters reported. When Musk bought Twitter late last year, he laid out a vision for an “everything” app called X, where users could communicate, shop, consume entertainment and more. Musk — who bought Twitter with a company called X Corp. — tweeted on Sunday that X.com now redirects to Twitter. Musk even told followers that tweets should instead be called “x’s.”On Sunday, CEO Linda Yaccarino seemed to confirm Musk’s vision for the company. Elon Musk has officially rebranded Twitter as "X," as he seeks to turn the platform into an "everything" app. And until Musk rolls out significant changes to the platform, observers of the company say ditching Twitter’s well-known brand is a risky move.

Elon Musk is rebranding Twitter to X.Branding experts have been calling out the decision, warning the company risks losing value. Elon Musk is rebranding Twitter to X and some people are confused by the move. The loss of the Twitter brand is projected to knock off anywhere between $4 billion and $20 billion in company value, Bloomberg reported, citing analysts and brand agencies. Allen Adamson, cofounder of marketing and brand consulting group Metaforce, told Fortune the move was "completely irrational from a business and brand point of view." Musk has long discussed his plans to create an app called X.

New York CNN —Meta on Tuesday launched a highly anticipated “following feed” option in its Threads app as part of its latest batch of updates that could help the new social platform further chip away at Twitter’s position in the market. The option to see a reverse chronological feed of posts from only accounts a user follows had been one of the most requested features since Threads launched earlier this month. Meta has been steadily rolling out updates to Threads as it tries to keep users engaged in the new app. Threads had a hugely successful launch, topping 100 million sign-ups in its first week, but engagement has declined somewhat since then. Meta’s ongoing work on Threads comes as the chaos at Twitter continues.

Elon Musk's Twitter rebrand could land him in legal hot water with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and others, experts say. On Sunday, Musk announced that he was getting rid of the Twitter brand and logo. Meta's trademark for a white-and-blue X relates to "social networking services in the fields of entertainment, gaming and application development." The announcement comes just weeks after the launch of Threads, a Meta-owned app seen by some as a "Twitter clone." X may be "powered by AI" in the future, as Yaccarino noted, but the first phase of Twitter's rebrand is simple for now.

Elon Musk announced that there will be a rebranding of Twitter soon, and speculation points to the implementation of X.Elon Musk has long been enamored with the letter X. Musk had already converted Twitter's corporate name to X Corp, which itself is a subsidiary of X Holding Corp, as revealed in an April court filing. Musk's desire to turn X into a super app requires "time, money and people," which Twitter "no longer has," said Proulx. "Twitter's rebrand is a reminder that Elon Musk, not Threads or any other app, is and has always been the most likely 'Twitter killer,'" Enberg wrote. Elon Musk announced Saturday that Twitter would be rebranding to X, replacing its bird logo and doing away with identifiable phrases like "tweet." Many Twitter users aren't totally on board with the move, resulting in CEO Linda Yaccarino's verbose statement being compared with a cringeworthy business pitch featured in "Succession." Kendall Roy, played by Jeremy Strong, describes it as "Substack meets Masterclass meets The Economist meets The New Yorker." Noah Shachtman, the editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone, quipped: "[Kendall Roy voice] It's, y'know, Venmo meets Clubhouse meets Ebay meets ChatGPT." "Enjoyable to imagine Kendall Roy saying this to investors," said another tweet, which has been seen 2 million times.

The move marks a revival of efforts by Alipay and WeChat Pay to accept foreign credit cards after they provided some limited access in late 2019. WeChat Pay is officially known as Weixin Pay in China. Alipay and WeChat Pay are dominant in digital payment services, accounting for a combined 91% market share. In 2019, Alipay and WeChat started allowing the use of foreign credit cards on their apps as Chinese regulators eased restrictions. A week later, an executive from Tencent said at a forum that the company would open wider its WeChat Pay system to international card organizations, such as Visa, starting in July.

The planned recipient of the colorful batik top was Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang, who has not been seen in nearly a month and is set to miss at least one other important meeting, in South Africa, next week. It is not clear whether even then Borrell would meet Qin as initially planned, the official said. The former aide to President Xi Jinping was appointed foreign minister in December after serving less than two years as ambassador to the United States. Qin's absence has also been widely discussed in the diplomatic community, with some saying it is another example of China's lack of transparency. Some diplomats have even started to speculate on who may replace Qin, with three telling Reuters the ranking vice foreign minister, Ma Zhaoxu could be a candidate.

Codenamed "Northern/Interaction-2023", the drill marks enhanced military cooperation between China and Russia since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine and is taking place as Beijing continues to rebuff U.S. calls to resume military communication. On Saturday, the ministry said Russian naval and air forces would participate in the drill taking place in the Sea of Japan. This would be the first time both Russian forces take part in the drill, state newspaper Global Times cited military observers as saying. Gromkiy and Sovershenniy, two Russian warships taking part in the Sea of Japan drill, had earlier this month conducted separate training with the Chinese navy in Shanghai on formation movements, communication and sea rescues. Chinese military Chief of Joint Staff Liu Zhenli and Russia's top soldier, Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov made the same pledge during a video call in June.

The moves should bolster efficiency at both firms, amid an already-stellar year for the two Club holdings. Apple surpassed a $3 trillion market capitalization last month, but has since pulled back to a valuation of $2.94 trillion. Meanwhile, WedBush recently forecasted that Microsoft could also join the $3 trillion club by early 2024 on the back of its artificial intelligence capabilities. This round of Microsoft layoffs is much smaller than the cuts the company announced earlier this year, so it probably doesn't move the needle.
