☆ Huawei launches first phones capable of running its new self-developed operating system

The phones are the first capable of running Huawei's new operating system called HarmonyOS NEXT. The Mate 70 is the successor of the Mate 60, which was released last year and sent shockwaves through the tech and political worlds. Huawei was separated from Google's Android operating system in 2019, forcing the Chinese tech giant to develop its own software. The Mate 70 series comes in three varieties — the Mate 70, Mate 70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro+. The Mate 70 starts at 5,499 ($759) Chinese yuan, while the Mate 70 Pro+ starts at 8,499 yuan.

CNN —The Israeli security cabinet on Tuesday voted to approve a ceasefire deal in Lebanon, an Israeli official told CNN, potentially bringing an end to more than a year of cross-border skirmishes with Hezbollah and months of a full-scale war that has killed thousands. Resolution 1701 was adopted to end a 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006, and had kept relative calm in the area for nearly two decades. CNN —Millions more senior citizens and lower-income Americans could obtain coverage for costly anti-obesity drugs under a proposal being unveiled Tuesday by the Biden administration. Some Medicare enrollees could see their out-of-pocket costs drop by as much as 95%. The incoming Trump administration may not view expanding coverage of anti-obesity drugs as favorably. About 3.6 million Medicare enrollees with cardiovascular disease could be newly eligible for Wegovy, according to a KFF analysis released in April. Not all job-based health insurance plans cover anti-obesity medications, though larger employers are more likely to offer the benefit.

CNN —An FBI special agent who was acquitted of attempted murder in a DC Metro shooting has been charged with raping and assaulting two women in Maryland, police said Monday. Eduardo Valdivia, 40, has been suspended from the FBI pending a police investigation, a spokesperson for the bureau’s Washington field office told CNN. “The FBI takes allegations of criminal violations and misconduct very seriously,” the field office said in a statement. Bonsib confirmed to the Associated Press that his client was arrested Monday on sexual assault charges. Valdivia is set to appear in Montgomery District Court on Tuesday for a bail hearing, according to court records.

Nordstrom on Tuesday beat Wall Street's quarterly sales expectations, as revenue grew about 4% year over year from shoppers buying clothing, shoes and activewear at both the company's namesake department store and its off-price chain. Compared with the second quarter, women's apparel, shoes and men's apparel sales in the fiscal third quarter also grew sequentially. Comparable sales increased 4% across Nordstrom's two brands, its namesake and its off-price chain, Nordstrom Rack. That easily topped analysts' expectations for 0.7% gains in comparable sales, according to StreetAccount. Nordstrom's sales growth, while modest, is notable at a time when sales of discretionary merchandise and the luxury category have been under pressure.

It’s official: A legal settlement that will rewrite the way many real estate agents are paid in the United States has received its final approval from a federal judge. Judge Stephen R. Bough of the Western District of Missouri on Tuesday approved an agreement between the National Association of Realtors and a group of home sellers who sued the real estate trade group over its longstanding rules on agents’ commissions, which they say forced them to pay excessive fees. It was the last step in an eight-month process that was set in motion when N.A.R., the nation’s largest trade association, agreed to the landmark deal on March 15. It was also largely a formality — Judge Bough gave preliminary approval to the agreement on April 23, and the rule changes detailed in the settlement took effect on Aug. 17, forcing agents across the country to begin adjusting how they do their jobs.

CNN —Researchers have discovered the residues of psychedelic drugs, bodily fluids and alcohol inside a 2,000-year-old mug, suggesting that ancient Egyptians imbibed hallucinogenic beverages during rituals. “Religion is one of the most fascinating and puzzling aspects of ancient civilizations,” Tanasi said in a statement. Researchers analyzed a 2,000-year-old Bes mug for chemical and DNA traces. Tanasi scanned the Bes mug to conduct a three-dimensonal study of the vessel. “Inebriation played an important ritual role in some ancient Egyptian festivals, especially festivals associated with the flooding of the Nile,” Barrett said.

Nearly every major automaker operating in the U.S. has factories in Mexico, however GM and Stellantis produce highly profitable full-size pickup trucks there.
