Bank of America has upgraded wind energy giant Ørsted from "neutral" to "buy" citing an improved risk-reward profile for the battered stock. However, Bank of America analysts expect Orsted's fortunes to improve in 2024 and have raised their price target from $15.06 per share to $22.80, representing nearly 20% upside from current levels. The upgrade and price target boost come after the stock has already staged a more-than-50% recovery from its November lows. Its remaining U.S. exposure consists primarily of the Sunrise Wind project off Long Island, which still needs state contract approval, according to the bank. Even if Sunrise Wind falls through, the analysts believe the downside to Ørsted shares would be manageable.

The IMF noted that about 60% of jobs could be impacted by AI in high-income nations, and roughly half of these may benefit from AI integration to boost productivity. Comparatively, AI exposure was estimated to come in at 40% in emerging markets and at 26% in low-income countries, respectively. The findings suggest that emerging markets and low-income countries face fewer disruptions from AI in the short-term. The IMF also flagged that AI could affect income and wealth inequality within countries, warning of "polarization within income brackets." The IMF report comes as business and political leaders from around the world gather at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Apple suppliers' shares have come under pressure over forecasts for weak demand from the iPhone maker this year. That follows Apple's shares falling 3.6% on Tuesday after Barclays downgraded Apple's stock to a sell-equivalent rating. The table below lists the Apple suppliers whose shares trade highly correlated to Apple's own, according to data from FactSet. That means those stocks win when Apple shares rise and lose when the iPhone maker falls. Conversely, a correlation of -1 would indicate that when the supplier's stock rises, Apple's shares fall by the same proportion.

Here are 6 signals investment bankers are watching as they pray for an M&A rebound in 2024. By contrast, activity from private equity firms "was off almost 40%," he said. In 2021, private equity firms transacted $1.5 trillion across 2,869 deals, according to Dealogic. Last year, private equity M&A made up 40% of total activity, according to Goldman Sachs. AI companies, many of which are only now being formed, need to mature, and the winners and losers need to come into focus, bankers said.

JPMorgan predicts European stock markets will struggle to produce positive returns next year as investors digest slowing economic growth across the continent. The forecast for 2024 comes from the same team of strategists that have, so far, accurately called the MSCI Eurozone's performance this year. They expected the index to rise 9.1% to close at 256 points by the end of December 2023 on a local currency basis. "We look for flat European [earnings per share] growth in 2024, based on no recession materializing," said JPMorgan strategists led by Mislav Matejka in a note to clients on Nov. 29. The JPMorgan strategists believe stocks will sink in the first half of 2024 as markets factor in potential downward adjustments to earnings estimates.

At the People’s Bank of China in Beijing, regulators are trying to address the risks of the country’s hidden debt. Photo: mark r cristino/ShutterstockChina is trying to defuse a financial time bomb that could severely damage its banking system. Cities and provinces across the country have accumulated a massive amount of hidden debt following years of unchecked borrowing and spending. The International Monetary Fund and Wall Street banks estimate that the total outstanding off-balance-sheet government debt is around $7 trillion to $11 trillion. That includes corporate bonds issued by thousands of so-called local-government financing vehicles, which borrowed money to build roads, bridges and other infrastructure, or to fund other expenditures.

Barclays has identified the European stocks that are most at risk of taking a hit to profits over rising interest payments for debt over the next two years. During the coronavirus pandemic, central banks cut interest rates to historic lows, enabling companies to borrow debt at very favorable rates. The table below shows the 10 stocks Barclays expects to have the biggest increase in interest costs through to 2025. Since interest costs are integral to real estate business models, the impact on margins and profits could be much more severe, the bank's analysts said. The Barclays team is confident that while interest rates can hurt company bottom lines, there was "scant" evidence that showed there was systemic risk.

The S&P 500 currently sits around 4,550. BMO’s chief investment strategist Brian Belski has predicted that the S&P 500 will close out 2024 at a healthy 5,100. The S&P 500 has gained about 18.5% so far this year after falling nearly 20% in 2022. Despite elevated borrowing costs, three years of high inflation and increasing numbers of Americans dipping into their retirement plans, consumers continue to keep the US economy chugging. Rising popularity from hedge funds can be a strong signal of outperformance in the near future for stocks, and Goldman Sachs highlighted which names the smart money is loving right now. The Wall Street bank analyzed the holdings of 735 hedge funds with $2.4 trillion of both long and short equity positions at the start of the fourth quarter, based on regulatory filings. Goldman then identified a slew of Russell 1000 stocks with the largest increase in number of hedge fund owners during the quarter. Kenvue , the consumer health business that Johnson & Johnson spun out as an independent company earlier this year, saw 48 hedge funds in total adding it as a holding last quarter, Goldman said. European growth stocks haven't been doing as well as their U.S. peers this year. Growth stocks in the region have underperformed value stocks by 13% since the start of the rate-hiking cycle in 2022, according to Goldman Sachs in a Nov. 20 report. Bond yields appear to have peaked — a positive for growth stocks — and economic growth should speed up in the first quarter of next year — a positive for value stocks. The bank recommends an overweight rating for pure growth companies, namely those in its growth basket. Goldman said "pure growth" companies are more cyclical than quality stocks or stocks with stable margins.

Hedge funds' favorite stocks have crushed the broader market in 2023, returning 31%, thanks to mega-cap technology companies, according to Goldman Sachs. It then compiled a basket of the most popular long positions, dubbed Goldman's "Hedge Fund VIP basket," consisting of 50 stocks that most frequently appear among hedge funds' 10 largest holdings. "From an implementation standpoint, the Hedge Fund VIP list represents a tool for investors seeking to 'follow the smart money' based on 13-F filings," Goldman said. "Mirroring the increasing concentration in the equity market, concentration in hedge fund portfolios has risen; the typical hedge fund holds 70% of its long portfolio in its top 10 positions," Goldman said. Goldman also noted that the overweight in mega-cap names lifted hedge fund exposure to "momentum stocks" to a near record.
