How to pick a good, affordable college before applying
  + stars: | 2024-06-17 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
New York CNN —Long before you take your high schooler on college campus tours, consider this: Shopping for college shouldn’t be any different than shopping for a home. Getting into that top 25% cohort is based on SAT or ACT scores, and having a high, unweighted GPA based on a rigorous high school curriculum. Other ways to reduce college costs before applyingWhile your children are in high school they can take other steps to reduce the total cost of their education. If their high school doesn’t offer them, there is a program called Freshman Year for Free offered by the Modern States Education Alliance. Getting the minimum AP scores a college requires to earn a college credit will lower how much you ultimately have to spend on tuition.

"Influencer marketing is so personal, it's about the creator," Jenkins said. Another day at Euro 2024, another trio of goalscoring games — even if the entertainment factor dipped off at points. The Netherlands overcame Poland with a 2-1 win, Denmark were held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenia, while England beat Serbia 1-0. But the goals, a lack of shots in one game and the results don’t tell the whole story of the day. The feel-good moment of the daySunday marked 1,100 days since Christian Eriksen collapsed at Copenhagen’s Parken stadium during a Euro 2020 game against Finland after suffering a cardiac arrest. He’s not fazed by anything, but will be key to England if they want to have a chance of winning Euro 2024.

Some recently manufactured Boeing and Airbus jets have components made from titanium that was sold using fake documentation verifying the material’s authenticity, according to a supplier for the plane makers, raising concerns about the structural integrity of those airliners. The falsified documents are being investigated by Spirit AeroSystems, which supplies fuselages for Boeing and wings for Airbus, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration. The investigation comes after a parts supplier found small holes in the material from corrosion. regarding procurement of material through a distributor who may have falsified or provided incorrect records,” the statement said. “Boeing issued a bulletin outlining ways suppliers should remain alert to the potential of falsified records.”

The Federal Aviation Administration’s top official acknowledged on Thursday that the agency failed to adequately oversee Boeing and that it should have had better visibility into the plane manufacturer’s safety practices long before a door panel blew off a plane while it was in flight on Jan. 5. Mike Whitaker, the agency’s administrator, appeared before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee weeks after Boeing, which has experienced a spate of problems, submitted a comprehensive plan detailing how it would overhaul its quality control practices and safety culture. “The F.A.A.’s approach was too hands-off, too focused on paperwork audits and not focused enough on inspections,” Mr. Whitaker said. “We have changed that approach over the last several months, and those changes are permanent.”Mr. Whitaker said the changes included permanently increasing the agency’s use of in-person inspections and barring Boeing from increasing production of its 737 Max jets until the agency is satisfied with the company’s quality control and safety improvements. will also continue to maintain a presence at the company’s factories and one of its suppliers, Spirit Aerosystems.

The Alabama ruling, which had threatened access to in vitro fertilization and other reproductive services in the state, caught many Americans, including conservatives, off guard. The idea that fertility treatments could be morally and legally questionable rattled many anti-abortion voters who had used such procedures to expand their families. And it further frayed the increasingly tense alliance between the anti-abortion movement and the Republican Party, which saw political peril in going after I.V.F. On Wednesday, the Southern Baptist Convention, the country’s largest Protestant denomination, voted to condemn the use of reproductive technologies like I.V.F. The moment was especially striking given that after the Alabama ruling earlier this year, Republican leaders quickly tried to signal to their base that they supported I.V.F., an extraordinarily popular procedure widely used by Christians and non-Christians alike.

Fourteen Amtrak executives received more than $200,000 each in incentive bonuses last year despite the service’s poor recent financial performance and struggles with its capital improvement projects, according to documents obtained by The New York Times. In 2023, Amtrak paid out more than $5 million in short- and long-term incentive bonuses to its executives even as the passenger rail service posted $1.7 billion in losses, according to records obtained from Senator Ted Cruz’s office. “It’s inexplicable that a dozen-plus Amtrak executives collected six-figure bonuses on the taxpayer’s dime.”Amtrak says the executive bonuses are necessary to attract and retain talent and rail expertise. Its incentive bonus program for 2021 came under intense scrutiny after The New York Times reported that the company had paid about $2.3 million in bonuses when the rail service reported its lowest revenue and biggest losses in more than a decade. On Wednesday, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee held a hearing to discuss two bills to increase transparency and accountability around the Amtrak bonus payouts.

At an assisted living facility in New York State, a small crowd had gathered at the dining room entrance at lunchtime, waiting for the doors to open. As a researcher observed, one woman, growing tired and frustrated, asked the man in front of her to move; he didn’t appear to hear. In Salisbury, Md., a woman awoke in the darkness to find another resident in her bedroom in an assisted living complex. He never menaced or harmed her mother, but “she’s entitled to her privacy,” Ms. Addy-Twaits said. In long-term care facilities, residents sometimes yell at or threaten one other, lob insults, invade fellow residents’ personal or living space, rummage through others’ possessions and take them.

CNN —Spanish race walker Laura García-Caro cut a dismayed figure at the end of the 20-kilometer race at the European Athletics Championships as she narrowly missed out on a bronze medal having celebrated before the finish line. García-Caro looked set to finish in third at the end of Friday’s race in Rome, and, with a Spanish flag draped around her neck and the finish line inside the Stadio Olimpico approaching, she punched the air in delight. Ukraine’s Lyudmila Olyanovska surged past her rival two or three meters from the line, leaving a look of horror on García-Caro’s face. The 31-year-old Olyanovska, a silver medalist at the European Championships 10 years ago, later dedicated the medal to Ukraine. London CNN —Police are searching for the parents of three babies who were wrapped in shopping bags and blankets, then abandoned in east London over the past seven years. A court revealed on Monday that baby Elsa, who was found left in a park in cold weather in January, is a sibling of two other newborns, PA Media reported. All three infants were found alive and were quickly cared for, with the oldest two since being adopted, according to PA Media. Like her sister Roman, she was left in very cold January temperatures. The incredible oblivion of Judge Marvin Isgur

On a mild Houston day in March 2021, Judge Marvin Isgur prepared to oversee the only case on his docket that morning. In October 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court rebuked Judge David Jones but said that his longtime colleague, Judge Marvin Isgur, had been "unaware" of Jones' inappropriate relationship. "But only Judge Isgur knows what he knew or didn't know about the relationship." Much of this work was in cases before either Judge Isgur or Judge Jones. Isgur can continue to hear the case, he ruled, writing in the December 2023 opinion that lawyers for the creditor "failed to demonstrate much other than that former Judge Jones and Judge Isgur are close friends."

Boeing’s top executives delivered a plan to improve quality and safety to the Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday, vowing to address systemic issues that have damaged the company’s reputation and put the aircraft manufacturer at the center of several federal investigations. Boeing detailed these and other steps during a three-hour meeting with the F.A.A.’s administrator, Mike Whitaker, where the company submitted a “comprehensive action plan” that the regulator ordered in February. Mr. Whitaker had given Boeing 90 days to develop a plan to make sweeping safety improvements after a midcabin panel known as a door plug blew out of a 737 Max 9 jet flying at about 16,000 feet on Jan. 5. No one was seriously injured during the flight. said in a statement on Thursday that “senior” leaders from the agency would “meet with Boeing weekly to review their performance metrics, progress, and any challenges they’re facing in implementing the changes.”
