What I Read and Watch to Decompress

“India’s Daughters,” the special newsletter series that I created with my colleagues Emily Schmall and Shalini Venugopal Bhagat, premiered last week. There will be a new chapter on Friday, and you can catch up with the first installment here if you missed it. Longtime readers will probably guess that “Pride and Prejudice,” by Jane Austen, is at the top of my decompress-and-disconnect list. As someone who isn’t a particularly fervent fan of even real tennis matches, I find fictional ones pleasantly untaxing. I want to hear about things you have read (or watched or listened to) that you recommend to the Interpreter community.

But Swiatek, who had surrendered her top ranking to Aryna Sabalenka after losing to Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round of the season's final Grand Slam last month, regained her grip on her rivalry with Gauff to reach a seventh final this year. "Every time it's a battle with Elena ... She's a champion," Samsonova said. London CNN —Five climate protesters from the activist group Just Stop Oil disrupted a performance of the musical “Les Misérables” at the Sondheim Theatre in London’s West End on Wednesday night. Just Stop Oil said the protesters locked themselves to the set using flexible bicycle locks at around 8:50 p.m. local time, which theater technicians were unable to remove. In a video Just Stop Oil posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, the audience can be heard booing at the protesters and telling them to get off the stage. “Like the citizens of Paris in 1832, you have locked your doors, while the young face slaughter on the streets. We will inherit a scorched earth, unfit to live in and our politicians will be long gone,” Just Stop Oil said.

1 seed Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets to reach the final of the China Open, where he will face world No. Sinner beat the two-time grand slam champion 7-6 6-1 in a statement victory, telling the ATP his performance was at the “very top” of the big matches he’s played in his career. In the second set, it was 6-1, but he had a lot of chances and I just tried to stay focused. Andy Wong/APAfter the match, Alcaraz echoed Sinner’s sentiments about how the encounter unfolded, particularly the first set. Medvedev, who holds a 6-0 record over Sinner, beat Alex Zverev 6-4 6-3 in the other semifinal as he bids for a sixth ATP title in what has been a brilliant season.

CNN —The Australian Open will add an extra day to its schedule next year in a bid to reduce pressure on players and fans following a series of punishing matches in recent years that ended well into the early hours. The Australian Open has a demanding schedule in the early rounds of the tournament; five matches are regularly played each day on the show courts – three during the day session and two at night. But organizers did not mention whether there would be a cutoff time for night matches. The lack of a time cap in tennis means matches last as long as it takes players to win. Three out of the four grand slams – the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open – currently schedule night sessions, while Wimbledon ends evening sessions at 11 p.m. with unfinished matches resuming the following day.

But the Serbian bounced back to beat Alcaraz in a thrilling final at Cincinnati before going on to claim a record-equalling 24th major at the U.S. Open earlier this month. Djokovic and Alcaraz have split their four meetings on tour and the veteran hoped they would continue having matches. Greg Marston, a British voice actor, recently came across “Connor” online — an A.I.-generated clone of his voice, trained on a recording Mr. Marston had made in 2003. Of course, at that time, Mr. Marston couldn’t envision that IBM would use anything more than the exact utterances he had recorded. Mr. Marston recently discovered his voice emanating from the Wimbledon website during the tennis tournament. Hollywood writers and actors are on strike partly because they want to ensure their work is not fed into A.I. News outlets including The New York Times and CNN have added files to their website to help prevent A.I.

Federer vows not to be a stranger to tour in retirement

Sept 23 (Reuters) - Swiss maestro Roger Federer said he had missed everything about tennis following his retirement last year and vowed to not be a stranger to the tour despite his off-court commitments and the challenge of parenting two sets of twins. "In a way, I miss everything about the game, the exciting moments spent on court, break points saved, winning match points, holding up trophies, walking past the fans, taking selfies," Federer said. I don't have the weight of another match, of another practice where the body is maybe not right. Can't have it all, I've had it for 25 years and it was incredible and I'd do it all over again." "I've made myself a promise that I'll be no stranger to the tour, I'll try to come back from time to time, not all the time, but from time to time," Federer said.

CHICAGO (AP) — Like so many tennis fans around the world, Nathan Willett was captivated by Carlos Alcaraz's five-set victory over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final this summer. Only Willett was on the road with the Cold War Kids, opening for Tears for Fears on a North America tour. There are 30 more dates on his schedule after Cold War Kids announced a tour on Tuesday in support of its self-titled 10th album — 12 songs that touch on everything from breaking up with a therapist to gender norms to confronting a toxic past. After releasing a trilogy of albums over three straight years and mulling over a more dramatic departure from the band's indie rock sound, Willett said Cold War Kids' new music is more about what it does best — leading to the eponymous title. It was a suggestion by his wife, Kristina Dahlin, who thought he needed a new hobby while Cold War Kids was off the road for a while.
