LOS ANGELES (AP) — A woman charged with killing a high-profile marketing consultant and social justice advocate in film pleaded not guilty Monday. Jameelah Elena Michl, 36, entered the plea in Los Angeles Superior Court to charges of murder and burglary, with additional allegations that she used a firearm to commit the felonies. Prosecutors say she knocked on the door of the Los Angeles home of Michael Latt — then forced her way in and fatally shot him with a semi-automatic handgun on Nov. 27. Latt, 33, was a well-known consultant in Hollywood whose firm focused on social impact in film and entertainment. At the ceremony, Satter and the two directors she mentored who presented her the award, Coogler and Chloe Zhao, paid tribute to Latt.

Maine’s top election official said on Friday she intends to appeal the ruling by a state Superior Court judge this week that placed on hold her decision to exclude former President Donald J. Trump from the state’s Republican primary ballot. In a statement, the official, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, said she welcomed the guidance of the U.S. Supreme Court, which is expected to hear arguments on a similar case on Feb. 8. But in the meantime, she said, she will seek the input of Maine’s highest court. “I know both the constitutional and state authority questions are of grave concern to many,” Ms. Bellows wrote in a short statement on Friday. The 14th Amendment disqualifies government officials who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from holding office.

SUMMER, 1976, by David Auburn. Read by Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht. Yet audio turns out to be the ideal way to experience “Summer, 1976,” a memory play by David Auburn that opened earlier this year at the Samuel J. Friedman Theater in New York. The veteran actresses Laura Linney and Jessica Hecht, reprising their stage roles, portray Diana and Alice, two women looking back at an unlikely friendship formed over one summer decades past. Alice, in turn, initially judges Diana to be “uptight,” but she grudgingly revises her opinion when Diana accepts her offer of weed on their daughters’ play date.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Lawyers for former President Donald Trump on Thursday urged the Supreme Court “to put a swift and decisive end” to efforts to kick him off the 2024 presidential ballot over his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. The Colorado court noted that Trump had held a rally outside the White House and exhorted his supporters to “fight like hell” before they walked to the Capitol. Trump's Supreme Court team is led by Texas-based lawyer Jonathan Mitchell, who devised aspects of the anti-abortion legislation that largely shut down abortions in Texas months before the Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade decision in June 2022. Colorado’s Supreme Court, by a 4-3 vote, ruled last month that Trump should not be on the Republican primary ballot. Both the Colorado Supreme Court and the Maine secretary of state’s rulings are on hold until the appeals play out.

Over the past several months, Newton has made difficult decisions to sever relationships and move Platformer off both Substack and X, the platform formally known as Twitter. For Newton, maintaining a presence on both X and Substack violated both his personal and business’ moral constitution. In the case of Substack, Newton expressed disappointment that the newsletter publisher had strenuously resisted calls to prohibit “literal 1930s-style Nazis” from building — and monetizing — audiences. “I am writing all the time about how companies are failing to live up to their stated values,” Newton told CNN. “My expectation is we are going to grow a lot more slowly on the free side this year,” Newton candidly acknowledged.

These presidents would presumably argue that in their capacities as president, they must expect some legal immunity to pursue policy and lead the country. EVEN EVENTS THAT ‘CROSS THE LINE’ MUST FALL UNDER TOTAL IMMUNITY, OR IT WILL BE YEARS OF TRAUMA TRYING TO DETERMINE GOOD FROM BAD. In arguing for total immunity, his lawyer said a president could only be prosecuted if he or she was convicted by the Senate in an impeachment trial. ALL PRESIDENTS MUST HAVE COMPLETE & TOTAL PRESIDENTIAL IMMUNITY, OR THE AUTHORITY & DECISIVENESS OF A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WILL BE STRIPPED & GONE FOREVER. Early in José Saramago’s 2006 memoir, “Small Memories,” he tells readers that he briefly considered calling it “The Book of Temptations” instead. His reasons were characteristically elliptical and charming: something about Bosch, and sainthood, and the fat prostitute who “in a weary, indifferent voice” invited a 12-year-old Saramago up to her room. (He doesn’t report his answer, but given how candid the book is elsewhere, it’s safe to assume he declined.) In the end, though, he decided that the title “Small Memories” better suited the book’s contents: “nothing of great note,” in Saramago’s estimation; simply “the small memories of when I was small.”But for a great writer, of course, there are no small moments, and Saramago (1922-2010) was one of the best. Saramago’s memoir, which appeared in English translation the year before he died, is a winsome look back at his coming-of-age in the small village of Azinhaga and later in Lisbon.

Many college students are taught that American society is the product of “settler colonialism” — a history of conquest and exploitation. In this simplistic framing, the plight of the Palestinians is just one more example of the familiar evils of settler colonialism. The Gaza war is better understood as a conflict between two competing nationalist projects than as a case of settler colonialism. There are a number of inconvenient historical truths that complicate the “settler colonialism” narrative. Another problem with the settler colonialism narrative is that it treats each side as a monolithic actor, playing the role of colonizer and victim, respectively.

Iowa Republicans were a clear reflection of that on Monday night, delivering the former president an emphatic victory. As clear-cut as his win was, though, Iowa has not historically played the role of kingmaker in the Republican nominating process. He chose to appear at court hearings as a defendant in his legal cases in New York and Washington rather than speak to Iowa voters in the final days before the voting. With its more moderate, educated electorate, New Hampshire presents Trump’s rivals with possibly their best opportunity to slow his march. Trump's strength among Republican voters is beyond dispute, but the road is long and could be bumpy.

LONDON (AP) — Billionaire vacuum cleaner tycoon James Dyson lost a libel lawsuit Friday against the Daily Mirror for a column that suggested he was a hypocrite who “screwed” Britain by moving his company's headquarters to Singapore after supporting the U.K.'s breakup with the European Union. A High Court judge in London said the article was opinion and rejected Dyson's claims that it was a “vicious and vitriolic” personal attack that damaged his reputation and harmed his philanthropic work encouraging young people to become engineers. “Mr Reade was not attempting to offer a window into or shine a light on the claimant’s thought processes or motivation," Justice Robert Jay wrote. "Rather, the ‘screwed his country etc.’ remark was Mr. Reade’s ‘take’ on how people would or might envisage the claimant’s actions.”The judge said Reade hadn't accused Dyson of dishonesty and had wide latitude to offer honest comment “however wounding and unbalanced” it may have been. Mirror Group Newspapers welcomed the judgment for upholding "the rights of our columnists to share honestly held opinions, even about powerful or wealthy individuals.”A Dyson spokesperson issued a statement defending its commitments to the U.K., including the employment of 3,700 people, but making no mention of the lawsuit outcome.
