Concerns have mounted in recent months about a spate of disinformation related to parliamentary elections in Slovakia on Sept. 30 and Poland next month as well as European Parliament elections next year. The companies and other online platforms have submitted data on their activity in the last six months to fight fake news as part of the EU code of practice on disinformation. "Today, this is a multi-million euro weapon of mass manipulation ..."The 'very large platforms' must address this risk. Especially as we have to expect that the Kremlin and others will be active before elections." After the last European Parliament elections in 2019, Russia's Security Council described accusations that Moscow had spread disinformation to sway voters as absurd.

[1/6] A person holds a placard that reads "No to amnesty" during a rally against a possible amnesty for Catalan separatist leaders in Madrid, Spain, September 24, 2023. Waving Spanish flags, supporters of the opposition conservative People's Party (PP) travelled from across Spain to attend the rally in Madrid. Puigdemont, wanted in Spain for attempting the region's secession, has demanded that legal action be dropped against fellow separatists as a condition for his support. Withdrawing criminal cases against the separatists would amount to granting an amnesty to "coup plotters", he told supporters at the Madrid rally. He did not mention an amnesty but said the Socialists wanted to heal social divisions over the Catalan crisis.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - The European Union is considering whether to send officials to Britain's upcoming artificial intelligence safety summit, a spokesperson told Reuters, as the bloc nears completion of wide-ranging AI legislation that is the first of its kind globally. European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova has received a formal invitation to the summit, the spokesperson said, adding: "We are now reflecting on potential EU participation." However, the Financial Times reported that British government officials favour a less "draconian" approach to AI regulation than the EU. Last month, Clifford told Reuters he hoped the summit would set the tone for future international debates on AI regulation. While a number of world leaders, including U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, are expected to attend the summit, it largely remains unknown who else has been invited -- or who has accepted an invitation.

CNN —Researchers working at a cave in southern Spain have found evidence that the skeletal remains of ancient humans buried there were dug up, modified and even used as tools by subsequent generations. While these types of remains are known as “skull cups,” that doesn’t necessarily mean they were used as containers, Milella said. “Modification and manipulation of human remains are indeed well known for this time, with examples also from the same region. In that sense, Marmoles Cave is consistent with what we know about the funerary behavior of these cultures,” he said. And it is also possible that those who modified the remains may have known the people that they belonged to when they were alive.

REUTERS/Jason Lee/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsBEIJING, Sept 19 (Reuters) - European Union businesses are concerned about China's data laws, including their "lack of clarity" and the "long processes" that companies have to undergo, European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova said on Tuesday. It now bans the transfer of any information related to national security and interests, without defining those terms, while widening the definition of spying to include cyberattacks against state organs or critical infrastructure. Jourova said the lack of definitions such as, for example, what constitutes important data, and the lack of clarity on how the law might be contravened was problematic as was the lengthy time it takes to complete procedural matters. China is committed to creating a fair, transparent and predictable business environment, the ministry said at the time.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China and the European Union held talks on topics including artificial intelligence and cross-border data flows on Monday in Beijing, amid disputes over an EU probe into China's electric vehicle (EV) subsidies. The meeting comes as tensions between China and the EU are heightened after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced an investigation into whether to impose punitive tariffs on Chinese EVs to protect EU producers. The talks on Monday covered key issues including platforms and data regulation, AI, and cross-border flow of industrial data, China and the EU said. The European Commission conveyed concerns about "difficulties faced by EU companies in China to make use of their industrial data, as a result of the application of recent legislation." Both sides agreed to promote an open, fair and non-discriminatory environment for the development of the digital economy, Xinhua said.

Following its review, the FAI said it would not renew her contract, which expired at the end of last month. Pauw said on Aug. 31 that she had begun talks with the FAI over a new contract in March and that it had "committed to issuing an offer" before reconsidering their position. "At no point was a contract offer ever presented to Vera," chief executive Hill told reporters on Thursday. "Conversations did not progress to a point where a formal offer was made to Vera ... and in advance of the World Cup, we decided to pause discussions." "We believed it was not appropriate to offer a new contract at this point."

Opinion | Mayor Adams and the Migrant Crisis in New York
  + stars: | 2023-09-11 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Adams Says Migrant Crisis ‘Will Destroy’ the City” (news article, Sept. 8):New York has welcomed immigrants arriving in the United States in search of safety, hope and opportunity for centuries. Mayor Eric Adams’s claim that the migrant issue will “destroy New York City” is dangerous and intentionally dividing our diverse communities that are known to work together in the face of adversity. It is clear that overheated rhetoric and divisive, xenophobic proposals are poisoning opportunities to constructively welcome migrants in New York. In this pivotal moment, we must strive for inclusive and compassionate policies that reflect the true spirit of New York. The mayor and others must consider the far-reaching implications of incendiary rhetoric and embrace opportunities to build a more united, equitable city for all.

Dabrowski and Routliffe win U.S. Open women's doubles title

Dabrowski and Routliffe, who began their partnership just last month, saved eight of the nine break points they faced during a match that lasted two hours, 14 minutes. It marked the first Grand Slam title for Routliffe, who previously represented Canada, and third for Dabrowski following the mixed doubles titles she won at the 2017 French Open and 2018 Australian Open. She really took a chance on me and I really appreciate it and love her for it," Routliffe said during their on-court interview. Siegemund and Zvonareva, who won the 2020 U.S. Open women's doubles competition, failed to convert any of the five break point opportunities they had in a tightly-contested first set that required a drama-filled tiebreaker. "I'm really, really proud of the way that we've stood by each other through thick and thin the last two weeks.

Just beyond the room, about 200 celebrities, fashion designers and media figures were packed tightly into a light-blue ballroom in the mansion. The night before, Mr. Adams hosted a different event on the other side of Central Park. “The crisis, not the people, the crisis is undermining the economic strength of our city,” he said. “The people want to come here to work, and their inability to do so, they can’t contribute to the city. It’s going to impact our police, it is going to impact our streets, it is going to impact everything in our city.”“And it is just wrong for New York City residents, taxpayers,” he continued.

SimpleClosure just raised a $1.5 million pre-seed funding round from Rex Salisbury and Vera Equity. The startup uses AI to automate the legal and procedural tasks for when a startup shuts down. The startup industry is predicted to be on the brink of a 'mass extinction event.' The numbers weren't looking good for the fintech startup, so one of the investors asked him to write a shutdown proposal. And when a business shuts down, incorrect winding-down procedures can add insult to injury in the form of fines, fees, and mistakes that can also affect customers and investors.

Sept 1 (Reuters) - Former Ireland coach Vera Pauw said executives from the country's football association (FAI) undermined her position and interfered in football matters during the Women's World Cup. Dutch coach Pauw led Ireland to their first major tournament this year in Australia and New Zealand, where they exited in the group stage. Eileen Gleeson, FAI's head of women and girls' football, was appointed interim head coach. "Following the article ... which included allegations I absolutely refute, I believe the FAI made some major mistakes by directly overruling the tasks of the coach," Pauw said on Thursday in a statement cited by the Irish Times. "I believe that the review process which the association has carried out was flawed and that the outcome was pre-determined," Pauw added.

Google launches watermarks for AI-generated images
  + stars: | 2023-08-30 | by ( Jennifer Korn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —In an effort to help prevent the spread of misinformation, Google on Tuesday unveiled an invisible, permanent watermark on images that will identify them as computer-generated. The technology, called SynthID, embeds the watermark directly into images created by Imagen, one of Google’s latest text-to-image generators. In recent months, an AI-generated image of Pope Francis in a puffer jacket went viral and AI-generated images of former President Donald Trump getting arrested were widely shared before he was indicted. With the announcement of SynthID, Google joins a growing number of startups and Big Tech companies that are trying to find solutions. The tech company also announced that every AI-generated image created by Google will carry a markup in the original file to “give context” if the image is found on another website or platform.

Electrical power pylons with high-voltage power lines are seen next to wind turbines near Weselitz, Germany November 18, 2022. REUTERS/Lisi Niesner/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsFRANKFURT, Aug 30 (Reuters) - A German court on Wednesday threw out the rates of return for power and gas network infrastructure operators set in 2021 by the grid regulator, saying companies were right to complain they were too low. The federal regulator, called the Bundesnetzagentur, had set permitted future returns for new power and gas infrastructure at 5.07%, versus 6.91% previously, leading 900 operators of local distribution networks to launch an appeal. The court in June heard test cases from 14 selected companies and upheld their arguments, it said in a statement. Leading power grid companies including E.ON (EONGn.DE) and EnBW (EBKG.DE) have said they need more money to remain competitive when billions of euros must be spent to accommodate more wind and solar power production plants on the grids.

Meade is executive director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, which works to restore voting rights in the state to former felons. Amendment 4 automatically restored voting rights to former felons, except those convicted of murder or sexual offenses, who have completed their sentences. Initially, organizers projected that Amendment 4 would restore voting rights to about 1.4 million Floridians, but as a result of these new hurdles only a little over 600,000 have actually regained their voting rights, Meade said. Even after Amendment 4, felons are required to have completed their sentence before recovering their voting rights in Florida, as in virtually all other states. Intervening to restore those rights to Trump, if he’s convicted of a felony before the election, would represent a stark departure from the clemency board’s typical procedures.
