The world's third largest carmaker by sales, last year launched Stellantis Ventures with an initial 300 million euros to invest in start-ups developing technologies that will further its 2030 goals, including those concerning the transition to lower-emission mobility. "We are using the strength of Stellantis Ventures to connect with companies that are developing cutting-edge technology that we believe can transform the in-cabin experience and improve the mobility sector," Stellantis technology chief Ned Curic said in a statement. Stellantis Ventures' global head Adam Bazih said the arm had so far used roughly a third of its funding to support 10 start-up companies and one mobility venture fund. They include lithium-sulfur EV batteries start-up Lyten, which Stellantis separately announced last month. Stellantis did not disclose the name of the U.S.-based mobility venture fund it is helping to fund due to a pending regulatory process, Bazih said.

The amount of money VC firms raised themselves hit $170.8 billion in 2022, according to PitchBook data, up from $158.5 billion in 2021. And it's also evident in two gigantic firms that had lofty fundraising goals but are now scaling back: Insight Partners and TCV. The firm has raised about 50% to 75% less for a $5.5 billion fund it planned for last year, The Information reported. Last month, Mayfield Fund announced that it raised $955 million across two new venture funds.

Unlike most tech conferences where tickets cost thousands, Tech Week is mostly free and open to anyone. If last year's hastily arranged LA Tech Week served as venture firm Andreessen Horowitz's LA coming out party, this year's version – taking place just 10 months later – served as the more polished but lower energy summer sequel. The $2.2 billion of U.S. customer assets held by Binance is at "significant risk" of being stolen by founder Changpeng Zhao unless a freezing order is in put place, federal regulators said in a filing Tuesday night, after the crypto regulator was charged by the Securities and Exchange Commission. The SEC sued Binance and Zhao on Monday, alleging they engaged in the unregistered offer and sale of securities and commingled investor funds with their own. Years of communications between the SEC and Binance, which claims no official headquarters, suggest that Binance.US couldn't clearly indicate who controlled customer assets, according to the filing. "Zhao and Binance have had free reign," the SEC alleged, over "customer assets worth billions of dollars." The SEC says federal law and precedent establish the court's jurisdiction over Zhao and Binance.

Wall Street desperately wants the stock market to go back to the good ol' days. In that environment, any idiot — or anyone on Wall Street — could buy almost any asset, sit back, and watch its value increase. In this scenario, the stock market gets choppy. It was a pull-in-case-of-emergency valve that we pulled for so long that now it feels normal to Wall Street. Despite this constant caterwauling from Wall Street, Americans are working, spending, and helping the economy defy doom-and-gloom forecasts.

The number of new funding deals so far this year is less than last year's Q1 total. The trend is in line with the larger VC funding slowdown in 2023, with the exception of AI deals. That's more than a 50% drop in the number of deals and total deal value from Q1 2022, which had 161 edtech venture deals totaling about $1.3 billion. Reach Capital recently raised a $215 million fund to fund both early and later stage edtech startups. Amid dismal funding for startups this year, the one bright spot has been for AI startups with some generative AI startups raising rounds well over $100 million.

The state of New Jersey offers a unique program that allows startups in the state to sell those losses for cash. To date, TrueFort has pulled in $20 million through a New Jersey program for startups. Those companies can then deduct those losses from their taxable income, cutting the amount of money they pay in taxes. The NOL program is especially popular among biotech businesses like Lisata, which are characterized by large R&D expenses and unpredictable paths to profitability. The NOL program is part of a suite of programs designed to support New Jersey startups.

CEOs of early-stage startups now make, on average, $142,000 — down from $150,000 last year, WSJ reports. CEOs in crypto, e-commerce, and direct-to-consumer industries are most impacted by the pay cuts. In the first quarter of 2023, global venture funding reached $58.6 billion — a 13% drop from the same quarter last year, according to a report from CB Insights, a research firm. CEOs on the losing end of the funding spectrum will feel the brunt of the pay cuts. The consulting firm's findings on salary cuts come as CEOs across major corporations are taking pay cuts this year.
Microsoft's M12 changed its strategy to become less like a VC and more like a business development team. "As with any leadership and strategy change, we aligned our team in a way that helps us meet our future direction. The problem with that shift, sources said, is that a corporate fund needs people who have very different career goals than an independent venture fund does. "Over the last year and half, we brought on new leadership at M12 and intentionally changed our corporate VC strategy. Employees who went along with the strategy change are generally happy at the fund, two of the people said.
Conventional wisdom says that to be successful, you should build a career plan: Map out where you are now, where you want to be and the steps you'll need to take to get there. Godin, a bestselling author and millionaire entrepreneur often dubbed a "marketing guru," says his accomplishments feel fulfilling specifically because he's never followed a predetermined path. His advice: Use "a compass and not a map," he recently told LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky's "The Path" newsletter. "I got 800, 900 rejection letters in a row, and it was more than a year before anyone wanted to publish my next book," Godin said. With a career map, Godin might have pursued entrepreneurship more single-handedly, never authoring that first book on the side and discovering a passion for writing.
