Want to work in tech? Don't work in tech.

I advise young engineers today to work for Fortune 500 companies, not Big Tech. Today, however, he's working on a project for a different kind of tech company: John Deere. There is no magic at Big Tech companies, there's only money. And Fortune 500 companies simply don't have the luxury of buying talent just to park it. Today, all companies are tech companies, and they all want to see more recurring revenue in their business models, which means they need smart, restless engineers.

The auto research firm JD Power assessed dozens of vehicle brands for its latest quality study. The overall quality of new vehicles is deteriorating and nagging problems are on the rise, according to a new study from JD Power. "The basic touch point of door handles is now a percolating problem area as manufacturers attempt to redesign them," JD Power said. JD Power assigned a score to each auto brand based on problems per 100 vehicles, and calculated an industry average of 192 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), up from 180 in 2022. In terms of vehicles themselves, the Nissan Maxima had the highest initial quality overall, with 106 problems per 100 vehicles, according to the survey.

Ms. Amitrano had heard Mr. Vazquez was “quite the ladies’ man,” so she did her best to play it cool, though she found him charming. Both Ms. Amitrano, now 29, and Mr. Vazquez, 31, were seeing other people on and off at the time. Companies Uber Technologies Inc FollowJuly 28 (Reuters) - The backup safety driver behind the wheel of a self-driving Uber Technologies (UBER.N) test vehicle that struck and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona, in 2018 pleaded guilty on Friday and was sentenced to probation, prosecutors said. The first recorded death involving a self-driving vehicle prompted significant safety concerns about the nascent autonomous vehicle industry. Police said previously the crash was "entirely avoidable" and that Vasquez was streaming "The Voice" TV program at the time of the crash. In 2019, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) faulted Vasquez's inactions and Uber for inadequate attention to safety and decisions in the company's autonomous vehicle development. In 2020, Uber announced the sale of its autonomous driving unit to self-driving car startup Aurora for $4 billion.

I got an early look at Volvo's $35,000 electric SUV coming in 2024. The little EX30 packs an estimated 275 miles of range and a stylish, minimalist interior. It's one of the most exciting Tesla rivals yet. The little SUV serves up stylish looks, enough range for most people, and a minimalist interior that improves upon the sort of uncluttered, tech-forward design that Tesla pioneered. All that, plus the electric SUV's bargain-bin starting price, makes the EX30 one of the most exciting Tesla rivals coming down the pike.

Bank of America has named multiple European "top stocks" it says are of "good value, low risk" and "high quality." All of them turned up on "recession screens" for July, in a market BofA described as a being in a recession style cycle. The euro zone entered recession in the first quarter of the year, according to economic data released last month. Energy companies the bank named include Shell , German company EON and Italian firm Enel . During recession cycles, investors have benefited from being overweight on value stocks rather than growth stocks, as well as on stocks with strong balance sheets and lower risk, BofA added, citing research based on a testing period between 1992 and 2003.

When Austin Russell was a 17-year-old high school student, he founded Luminar Technologies, which makes laser sensors that can help self-driving cars detect nearby objects. Now 28, Russell is the world's youngest self-made billionaire, according to Forbes, as Luminar competes with major companies like Tesla and Alphabet's Waymo. But self-driving cars aren't exactly commonplace on American roads, meaning Russell and Luminar have a lot of work ahead of them, despite their lofty valuations. How it differs from Tesla's approachElon Musk's Tesla also seeks to popularize self-driving cars, and Musk's approach to the technology is entirely different. Lidar could potentially change that, Russell says: Cameras can be helpful "for certain use cases," but lidar is "a huge step forward."

The ocean floor has billions of tons of rocks filled with important rare metals used for green technology. But a growing list of countries and corporations are calling for a moratorium on deep-sea mining. The International Seabed Authority missed its July 9 deadline to approve a set of rules and regulations for deep-sea mining. The missed deadline leaves the door open for companies to apply for mining licenses without proper regulations put in place. Representatives of the agency gathered for a two-week meeting in Kingston, Jamaica, to discuss the future of deep-sea mining.

Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan photographed in Nov. 2022. Volvo Cars does not plan to use autonomous driving technology from Tesla and will instead focus on developing its own systems, according to the company's CEO. Speaking to CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Thursday morning, Volvo Cars chief Jim Rowan was asked whether this meant the business would consider using Tesla's autonomous driving tech in the future. "And we've chosen that we want to be in full control of our ADAS [advanced driver assistance systems], all the way up to full AD [autonomous driving] software," he added. In a sign of how the company's strategy is taking shape, Volvo Cars announced late last year that it had taken full ownership of Zenseact, a business specializing in AD software.

LONDON — European markets were muted on Thursday as investors assessed the implications of some big U.S. corporate results and the start of earnings season at home. The pan-European Stoxx 600 hovered around the flatline in early trade, with tech stocks shedding 2.4% to lead losses on the back of weak U.S. earinings, while mining stocks added 1.4%. Markets in Asia-Pacific were mixed overnight as investors digested a slew of economic data across the region. Japan's Nikkei 225 led losses after the country posted a surprise trade surplus of 43 billion yen ($308 million), its first surplus in 23 months. Several car companies say their EVs will be built with the Tesla charging standard starting in 2025. Otherwise, buying an EV other than Tesla now means its charging tech will soon be in the minority. It's supposed to be a huge advantage to non-Tesla car companies that they're switching to Tesla's charging tech. With automakers, charging providers, and more moving to Tesla's tech, CCS will be far less popular in the coming years. The EV buyers in five to 10 years will be buying tech that's more advanced and stabilized.

STOCKHOLM, July 20 (Reuters) - Sweden-based automaker Volvo Cars (VOLCARb.ST) reported a 54% fall in second-quarter operating earnings on Thursday as the year-ago period's profit was boosted by a one-off gain, and it forecast healthy demand for its vehicles despite pricing pressures. Volvo Cars, majority-owned by China's Geely Holding (GEELY.UL), said earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) fell to 5.0 billion Swedish crowns ($488.62 million) from a year-ago 10.8 billion. Volvo said its sales performance was driven by improved production output and that it expected supply and demand to continue to normalise in the wider markets. The company added that the normalisation would bring some additional pricing pressures, but that demand for its cars were expected to be healthy despite high interest rates squeezing its customers and overall market. Volvo reiterated its guidance of solid double-digit growth in retail sales for the full year.

Ms. Battle has been leading an effort to have businesses pledge not to finance seabed mining or source seafloor materials in their supply chains. Similarly, prominent banks in Britain, such as Lloyds and Standard Chartered, are refusing to do business with deep-sea mining entities. But critics say that the expense and logistics of mining in the remote ocean — and transporting metals back to land — raise doubts about whether deep-sea mining can be profitable. “This industry could start without being needed,” she said of deep-sea mining. But seabed mining supporters say that existing mining is worse for the environment, and deep-sea mining could help wrestle control of critical metals from China and Russia.
