While rent prices are undoubtedly rising, it’s unclear how much of the jump is due to corporate investors who buy up multiple properties. “Community after community feels taken advantage of by Wall Street investors and corporate landlords who have bought thousands of single-family homes during recent downturns,” Harris’ policy platform reads. A CNN analysis found that rent increases recently outpaced wage growth in cities with a meaningful presence of big investors. Ownership by corporate landlords, which CNN calculated by combining limited liability entities, real estate corporations and real estate investment trusts, stood at 16%. The number of single-family homes under construction dramatically decreased after the 2008 financial crisis, and construction never really returned to pre-recession levels.

Often the candy and fruit vendors are migrant women, sometimes seen with their young children in tow. A city-run program called Promise NYC has tried to ease some of the challenges by partnering with local organizations to provide free child care through subsidy payments to child care centers that enroll migrant children. A survey conducted by Algun Dia, the migrant vendors outreach project, found that the need stretched across many families. “We found that 84% of the individuals that we had surveyed were vending out of necessity, and they were doing so because of their lack of child care.

New developments show the path for Western banks trying to exit Russia has gotten tougher. Moscow will block the sale of Western bank assets to local Russia buyers, sources told Bloomberg. Russia's government has signaled that it will block any efforts from Western banks to offload their local units to Russian-owned entities, according to Bloomberg, who cited people familiar with the matter. Given the fact that Russia has also prevented sales to foreign buyers, these Western banks appear to be stuck, with limited options available.
