The United Auto Workers union is launching an unprecedented campaign to organize 13 non-union automakers in the U.S. after securing record contracts with the Detroit automakers. As part of the campaign workers are signing electronic cards in support of union efforts to potentially organize U.S. plants from those automakers. It is not guaranteed that the union would push to organize every plant or automaker that participates in the campaign. UAW President Shawn Fain has said the union's next mission after ratifying record contracts with General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis was to expand its ranks. Still, the UAW has a poor track record with trying to organize non-Detroit automakers.

Nikki Haley is instructive. But nowhere does it talk in depth about policy or what the Koch brothers’ organization represents within the Republican coalition. What makes Haley interesting in this race is not, in fact, her position in the polls but her position in the party. Haley was, after all, Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations, an interesting position for someone who so sharply diverges from Trump’s ostensibly non-interventionist foreign policy. Or maybe it’s Haley, the standard-bearer for a more inclusive Republican Party, defined by her identities as a woman and Indian-American.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. is resuming construction on a Michigan electric vehicle battery plant that the company postponed two months ago during a strike by the United Auto Workers union. But the automaker says that due to slowing electric vehicle sales growth, it will scale back the factory size, cutting the number of planned jobs by about one third from 2,500 to 1,700. Ford put the plant, originally to cost $3.5b, on hold in late September as the union went on strike at targeted assembly plants run by Ford, General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis. The strike lasted more than six weeks before the union won contracts it was seeking from all three unionized US automakers. The unions won significant pay increases and job protections they were seeking. And even with some of the contracts that pass, some union members offer significant opposition, believing they could have negotiated for even more. The union won a contract approved by 86% of membership who voted on ratification.

CNN —Ford has restarted work on an electric vehicle battery plant in Michigan, but the plant will be smaller than was originally planned. Last month, Ford had laid off some workers building the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. By producing batteries in the United States, the plant should help Ford to take advantage of EV tax credits tied, in part, to domestic battery manufacturing. Ford is also building two battery plants in Kentucky and Tennessee. Ford has said it plans to be able to produce two million electric vehicles globally by late 2026.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents more than 23,000 members at American has not overcome any of the many legal hurdles it needs to conquer before the union could strike. But even if the flight attendants win their request to have the clock start ticking towards a strike 30 days from now, a strike then is not likely. But it’s possible, and in the case of American Airlines, likely, that Congress would act to block a strike. Last month, flight attendants at Southwest Airlines won an immediate 20% raise, with retroactive pay.

(Reuters) - Workers at MGM Resorts International's Detroit casino have rejected a tentative five-year labor contract and will continue with their month-long strike, union officials said on Monday. However, about 2,100 union members at Hollywood Casino at Greektown and MotorCity Casino voted on Monday to ratify the new contract, ending a 34-day strike. The council reached a tentative agreement on Nov. 17 for a new contract covering 3,700 workers at MGM Grand Detroit, Hollywood Casino at Greektown operated by Penn Entertainment and MotorCity Casino. Despite the continuation of the strike at MGM Grand, operations will continue as usual, the casino said. About 40,000 hospitality workers in the Las Vegas Strip also reached a tentative labor deal with casinos operated by Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment and MGM earlier this month.

Nov 20 (Reuters) - Nissan Motor (7201.T) will hike top wages for workers at U.S. manufacturing plants by 10% in January after the United Auto Workers union reached new contracts with the Detroit Three automakers, a company spokesperson said on Monday. The Japanese automaker said the wage hike takes effect Jan. 8 for production technicians, maintenance, and tool & die technicians. Nissan said it is also eliminating wage tiers for U.S. production workers. Nissan said the pay hikes reflect its commitment to its employees in the United States "and enhancing our competitiveness." The UAW for decades has unsuccessfully sought to organize auto factories operated by foreign automakers.

Despite the opposition from workers at some major facilities, UAW members voted to ratify the contract by a near two-third margin.
