Daniel Roland | Afp | Getty ImagesTwo months since UniCredit played its opening move to woo German lender Commerzbank , the lenders flaunted their financial strength as one of Europe's largest banking mergers still hangs in balance. Both banks reported third-quarter results on Wednesday, with UniCredit posting an 8% year-on-year hike in net profit to 2.5 billion euros ($2.25 billion), compared with a Reuters-reported 2.27-billion euro forecast. It raised its full-year net profit guidance to above 9 billion euros, from a previous outlook of 8.5 billion euros. When the Italian lender showed its hand by using derivatives to build a potential 21% stake in Commerzbank, the German lender appointed a new CEO and sharpened its financial targets.

Three global alcoholic beverage makers are likely to see a "negative impact" from a Republican victory in the U.S. election due to the potential for trade tariffs, according to TD Cowen analysts. Guinness maker Diageo would be one of the companies to be impacted by a "smaller degree," according to the bank's analysts. These tariff measures were relaxed by the EU in early 2022, but are expected to be reinstated and doubled to 50% in 2025. STZ 5Y line Diageo Tariffs could "hit multiple areas of the business" at Diageo, TD Cowen analysts said. The company, which makes the Don Julio tequilas in Mexico, has nearly a quarter of its total sales in the U.S. reliant on tariff free trade at the southern border.

Nearly all the world’s countries pledged to strive to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees Celsius in the Paris Agreement, which scientists said would prevent cascading and worsening impacts such as droughts, heat waves and catastrophic sea level rise. Data released Wednesday by Europe’s Copernicus Climate Change Service shows 2024 is “virtually certain” to shoot above that threshold. “We don’t have time to stop,” Alex Scott, a climate diplomacy strategist at international think tank ECCO said Wednesday. It would be a more “serious” and “dramatic” step, said Alden Meyer, senior associate at climate think tank E3G and a longtime international climate expert. With Trump’s reelection, global climate negotiations are facing another whiplash moment as Americans seesaw between presidential extremes, said Meyer.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk and his business empire stand to reap massive rewards if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House. Elon Musk joins former US President Donald Trump during a campaign event in Butler, Pa., on Oct. 5, 2024. “I love Elon Musk,” Trump said at a rally in July. It’s not clear how Musk and Trump would navigate the ethical questions around a possible government role for the tech billionaire. “He would be in much less trouble in a Trump administration because Trump shares his hostility to regulation and regulators,” Richard Pierce, a law professor at George Washington University specializing in government regulation, told NBC News in an interview earlier this year.

Boeing machinists approved a new labor deal Monday that ends a more than seven-week strike that halted most of the company’s aircraft production. Machinists voted 59% in favor of the new contract, which includes 38% wage increases over four years. It was their third vote since walking off the job on Sept. 13 when they overwhelmingly rejected an earlier proposal promising 25% raises, far short of the 40% the union sought. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

For President Joe Biden, the 2024 campaign ended much as it began, in a room full of union members. Even Biden at times would double-check with senior aides about looming actions, asking, “Have we run this by the vice president?” according to a senior official. Advisers are working on what Biden’s final weeks, and hours, in office will look like. “They’ll pull me aside, one leader after another, quietly, and say, ‘Joe, he can’t win. Harris’ first stop on the campaign’s final day was in Scranton, where for the second consecutive day she didn’t once mention Trump’s name.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea on Tuesday fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward its eastern sea, the South Korean military said, as the country continued its weapons demonstrations hours before the U.S. presidential election. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles flew about 250 miles but did not specify how many were fired. The launches came days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a flight test of the country’s newest intercontinental ballistic missile designed to reach the U.S. mainland. South Korea’s military intelligence agency said last week that North Korea has also most likely completed preparations for its seventh nuclear test. Experts say North Korea has yet to acquire some critical technologies to build a functioning ICBM, such as ensuring that the warhead survives the harsh conditions of atmospheric re-entry.

Striking Boeing workers voted in favor of a 38% pay rise. The latest big victory for US labor unions could inspire others despite the tense process. AdvertisementThe machinists' victory is the latest to highlight the power of labor unions in the US. It has been a tense road for the roughly 33,000 unionized Boeing workers who began their strike on September 13. That may only grow more common as workers find inspiration from others' victories, something noted by the president of the Boeing union.

CNN —Several non-credible bomb threats that briefly disrupted voting at two Georgia polling places originated from Russia, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters Tuesday. “Anything that can get us to fight amongst ourselves - they can count that as a victory.”Raffensperger, a Republican, did not elaborate on how exactly state officials determined the bomb threats came from Russia. The non-credible threats caused the temporary closure of polling places at the Etris Community Center and Gullatt Elementary in Union City, just outside of Atlanta, according to Fulton County Police. An officer told him and other voters they couldn’t enter the site to vote because of a bomb threat. “They had to remove all the workers, they couldn’t let anyone in until they assessed the threats,” said Osborne.

Pawtucket, Rhode Island AP —For several decades, the cremated remains of more than two dozen American Civil War veterans languished in storage facilities at a funeral home and cemetery in Seattle. The simple copper and cardboard urns gathering dust on shelves only had the name of each of the 28 soldiers – but nothing linking them to the Civil War. While some remains are hidden away in funeral homes, others were found where they fell in battle or by Civil War re-enactors combing old graveyards. The remains of several more Civil War veterans were sent to Maine, Rhode Island and other places where family connections were found. Bruce Frail and his son Ben – both long active in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War – were on hand for service.

They also agreed in principle to bring new electric-vehicle battery plants into the national union contract. After negotiations broke down in early July 2023, Atlanta-based UPS reached a contract agreement with the Teamsters just days before an Aug. 1 deadline. The Culinary Workers Union announced on the social platform X that the deal came together after a year of negotiations. The lead up to the tentative agreement included a three-day strike involving 75,000 workers in multiple states. The tentative agreement also included protective terms around subcontracting and outsourcing, as well as initiatives to invest in the current workforce and address a staffing crisis.
