NEW YORK (AP) — The United Auto Workers' strike is getting bigger. Currently, UAW workers hired after 2007 don’t receive defined-benefit pensions. During walkouts, workers are set to receive about $500 a week in strike pay — far short of what they earn while they’re working. During a 40-day UAW strike in 2019, GM lost $3.6 billion. The UAW strike is also testing President Joe Biden’s claim that he’s the most pro-union president in U.S. history.

REUTERS/Michael Swensen Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 22 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Detroit will run out of road before its unions do. In 2019, when a UAW strike closed manufacturing at GM for 40 days, it reduced output by 300,000 vehicles and operating profit by $3.6 billion. The crux of negotiations probably will come down to wages, where Fain said Ford has budged, including the reinstatement of cost-of-living increases. With the UAW prepared to endure, Detroit will be pressured to blink. The union on Sept. 15 initiated targeted walkouts at three plants owned by the three Detroit vehicle manufacturers.

REUTERS/Bianca Flowers Acquire Licensing RightsSept 22 (Reuters) - Jeffrey Aznavorian has already cut output about 6% at his small auto parts factory outside Detroit due to the United Auto Workers strike. If the strike expands, it would only be a matter of weeks before some smaller suppliers faltered, said Marick Masters, a professor of business at Wayne State University. He estimates 30% of smaller suppliers carry too much debt to survive a long strike. Other measures also point to a supply base that was strained even before the strike. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Americans broadly back striking workers in the auto industry and Hollywood, according to a two-day Reuters/Ipsos poll completed on Wednesday that found significant support among both Democrats and Republicans. Some 72% of self-identified Democrats said they backed the auto workers strike and 79% said they supported the Hollywood strike. The poll found that 48% of Republicans backed the auto workers strike, while 47% opposed it. Other candidates like Nikki Haley and Tim Scott have said the auto workers are asking for too much. Two-thirds said pay for CEOs and workers should go up equally -- a central talking point of the UAW strike.

For the first time in its 88-year history, the UAW is on strike at all three of the Detroit companies at once. "We have a bigger point to make," Wegener said, noting the strike sends a larger message about inequality across the industry. In fact, the United Auto Workers-led strike at the Detroit 3 is shaping up to have an outsized effect on the entire automotive industry. "If the UAW does dig their heels in and does well here, it's highly likely that they will get other auto workers who are not UAW auto workers to be very interested," Ambrose Conroy, CEO of consultancy Seraph, said. Even the branding of the strike, which Fain has called the "Stand Up" strike, is a play on the UAW's highly influential 1937 sit-down strike at GM.

Stellantis provided a glimmer of hope for a breakthrough by giving the union a new contract proposal. It was not clear whether the Stellantis offer would satisfy union President Shawn Fain, who vows to announce new strike targets on Friday unless there is “serious progress” toward agreements with GM, Stellantis and Ford. So far UAW workers are striking at just three factories — one for each company, including a GM assembly plant near St. Louis. The workers are covered under a different contract than those that UAW is negotiating with the three big automakers. If ratified, it would cover more than 5,000 workers and provide a model for similar deals at GM and Stellantis operations in Canada.

Several Republican presidential candidates have gone on the attack against unions in response to the United Auto Workers' strike, despite strong support for organized labor among the American public. Sen. Tim Scott on Monday said striking workers should be fired, saying he would emulate President Ronald Reagan who terminated more than 11,000 striking air traffic controllers in 1981. Haley said President Joe Biden had "emboldened" the UAW by proclaiming he is the "most pro-union president in American history." The UAW strike also enjoys solid support with 54% of U.S. adults approving the work stoppage, according to a Morning Consult poll. The autoworkers strike could escalate ahead of the Republican primary debate next week at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

CNN —The threat of a strike at one competitor and the bankruptcy of another proved beneficial for FedEx this summer. Overall, adjusted earnings for FedEx’s fiscal first quarter were $4.55 a share, up from $3.44 a share this time last year. “As a result, we are well positioned as we prepare for the peak season.”The shipping company said its businesses saw a boost from UPS’s negotiations with the Teamsters Union and Yellow Corp.’s implosion during the quarter. For the company’s Ground division, which is its low-cost shipping service, the company reported that operating income grew 59%. FedEx gained customers from Yellow’s bankruptcyBut UPS’s contract negotiations were not the only external factor that helped boost FedEx this quarter.

New York CNN —As the US national debt passes $33 trillion and a government shutdown looms, Wall Street feels defensive. What’s happening: The gross national debt has grown at an alarming pace since then — by $1 trillion in the last three months alone. Political finger pointing around what caused the accelerated debt accrual, meanwhile, has left the government at an impasse around the budget. The recent increase in interest rates has already made it much more expensive for the government to pay back what it owes. That would leave the door open for another rate increase, which could come when the following meeting concludes, on November 1.

WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - When the CEO gets a 40% raise, what do the workers deserve? UAW President Shawn Fain initially asked for a 40% increase in worker's pay over the next four years - a figure based off an approximately 40% increase in CEO pay at the companies over the last four years at a time of stable profits for two of the three automakers. CEO pay and benefits have skyrocketed in recent decades, but worker pay has not kept pace. As the strikes began last week, Biden echoed Fain, saying automakers should offer more of the share of their profits to workers. Attempts to address rising CEO pay in decades past have not had the intended effect, said Rosanna Landis Weaver, director of wage justice and CEO pay at As You Sow, a non-profit shareholder advocacy group.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen speaks during an interview in New York City, U.S., September 18, 2023. President Joe Biden's administration is working to encourage both sides to resolve the strike quickly, Yellen said. The U.S. Treasury market "continues to function pretty well" despite higher rates and some volatility, she said. But nothing that is really out of line with what you would expect given the volatility in the underlying market," Yellen added. New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union’s already unprecedented strike against General Motors, Ford and Stellantis could soon get even bigger. So far, the strike, which started early Friday, has targeted only one final assembly plant at each automaker. So, noon on Friday, September 22nd is a new deadline.”While 12,700 union members are on strike, most of the 145,000 members at the three automakers remain on the job. The UAW chose to target final assembly plants first, which has made the initial strikes quite targeted and tactical. Spreading impact of strikeThe impact of the strike will have a ripple impact on other factories beyond the three targeted already by the UAW strike.

According to an update posted on the union site: “Unifor is extending negotiations with Ford Motor Company for a 24-hour period. By contrast, Unifor announced if it goes on strike, it will strike all the Ford facilities where it represents members. The union had granted them contract extensions while it focused its negotiations on reaching the best possible deal with Ford. It has not had a strike in its Canadian operations since 1990 and has not had a US strike since 1978. A Canadian strike could be a bigger blow to Ford’s sales than the UAW strike, which is so far is limited to one factory in Michigan in the case of Ford.
