Lobotomies used to be a horrific way that doctors tried to treat patients with mental illness. Different doctors performed lobotomies differently, but one of the primary approaches was to drill a hole in the side of the skull to access the brain. Doctors thought that severing certain connections in the brain could help treat mental illness. By the 1950s, lobotomies were on their way out, but not before doctors performed over 40,000 of them in the US alone. A drill, shown on the right, is cranked by hand to help doctors access the patient's brain.

There were three important deaths recently: Ted Kaczynski, Silvio Berlusconi, Cormac McCarthy. Or maybe not so strangely assorted; maybe the three men were variations on a theme — that theme being alienation, and specifically masculine alienation, from the patterns and rules of late-modern civilization, and the different rebellions that alienation might inspire. In a phrase, when we talk about traditional modes of manhood, we’re often talking about mastery through physical strength and the capacity for violence. That kind of mastery will always have some value, but it had more value in 1370 than 1870, and more in 1870 than it does today. And the excess, the superfluity, must therefore be repressed, tamed or somehow educated away.

The other drug hopeful is iptacopan, which is being trialled against a number of rare genetic disorders, including IgAN and another kidney disease. IgAN is a progressive autoimmune disease that mostly affects young adults and which can lead to kidney failure that requires dialysis or organ transplantation. An AI-powered startup called Odaia is looking to change that by providing real-time data analysis. That's according to Philip Poulidis, a cofounder and the CEO of an AI-powered startup called Odaia. Odaia said on Monday that it had raised a $25 million Series B round led by Threshold Ventures and Monograph Capital. ODAIAFounded in 2018, Odaia helps pharmaceutical sales and marketing teams plan their strategies and product launches through a tool that offers data analysis and market forecasts. Odaia removed financial details from the pitch deck it used to raise its Series B round before sharing the presentation with Insider.
