BEIJING — Eastern China is baking under unseasonably high temperatures, with the excessive heat expected to linger in mega coastal cities in the highly industrialized provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang for up to 10 more days. In the east and northwest of China, temperatures as high as 43.9 degrees Celsius (111.02 degrees Fahrenheit) have scorched Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Anhui and Xinjiang in recent days, state broadcaster CCTV said. The city of 12.5 million people is expected to swelter under temperatures exceeding 104F through Sunday. Jiangsu’s observatory issued a red warning for heat on Sunday after high temperatures that had persisted for more than a week further intensified. Hangzhou is expected to see 10 straight days of above 104F weather, breaking its record of eight days in 2013.

The unwind of the global yen "carry trade" is a force battering stocks. AdvertisementStocks plunged on Monday, and market pros say a lot of it has to do with the global unwind of the yen "carry trade." The carry trade refers to investors borrowing money at near-zero interest rates in Japan, and then redeploying that cash into higher-yielding assets around the world, such as stocks and bonds. "The selloff here is to a large extent attributable to the unwind of the so-called carry trade," Ed Yardeni told Yahoo Finance on Monday. AdvertisementThe unwind in the yen carry trade will go down as the biggest ever, according to a Monday note from Societe Generale.

Summer 2024 could be remembered not just for its historic temperatures, but for its successive heat waves with unusual geographic reach. More than 36 million Americans were under advisories, watches or warnings for dangerous and excessive heat Saturday night, according to National Weather Service data. The Gulf Coast and the South were also in for triple-digit highs for much of the week, the weather service said. "The prolonged nature of the heat will increase the risk of heat-related illness," it said in warning that much of the West would experience dangerous heat next week. "The combination of high temperatures increasing into the lower 100s along with high humidity will result in major to extreme" risk for heat-related illness, the weather service said.

If my kids are inside, they may knock on the door to see if they can play. My kids get play dates without us having to schedule or drive anyone, and more often than not, everyone plays by the rules. Adults often stop by to chat, too, which is also nice for me; our backyard has become something of a neighborhood hangout. There are rules, and all the kids have to follow themIt's simple enough: everyone needs to be having fun. Other parents on my block also let kids come by to play, and each household (and yard) may have slightly different rules.

As families shop for school supplies, how should they prepare for the spread of viruses and other diseases? Dr. Leana Wen: Historically, respiratory illnesses peak later in the year when the weather gets cooler. CNN: As families shop for school supplies, should they also pick up Covid tests or medications to treat respiratory illnesses? Despite using these and other preventive measures, it’s likely that kids will contract respiratory viruses many times during the school year. Which means adults would also do well to prepare for what happens if we get sick — and take preventive measures accordingly, too.

Grass Valley, California, was one of those places for me. AdvertisementWhile Martin debated pros and cons, I quickly mapped Sacramento to Grass Valley — it was 56 miles. On a scouting trip, he agreed that Grass Valley seemed like a great place. But once we finally lived in the Northern California town, we realized we may have been better off just visiting. At least 23 people were killed in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Tuesday, officials said, after landslides triggered by heavy rains struck an area with rugged, hilly terrain. Rescue workers were struggling to reach the area, in the rural district of Wayanad, because bridges had collapsed and roads had been swept away. State officials said more than 400 families were stranded in remote villages, because the only road connecting them to the rest of Kerala had been cut off. “The weather is very bad, but we are trying to do everything we can,” said Veena George, Kerala’s health minister. Television footage showed water gushing through extensively damaged residential areas.

Large portions of England and Wales braced for considerable heat on Tuesday, with government officials issuing an alert for vulnerable people and meteorologists warning it would be hottest day of the year so far. The heat in Britain may also stir up sweaty memories of a string of brutally hot days across the country in July 2022, when schools, doctors’ offices and museums shut their doors while the government urged people to work from home. In Britain, few people have air conditioning at home, and much of the country’s housing stock was built to retain heat. Transport delays in very hot or very cold weather are not uncommon. “Much of the U.K. is entering a warm or even hot interlude of weather, with some places in England and Wales likely to meet heat-wave criteria in the coming days,” Frank Saunders, the chief meteorologist at the Met Office, Britain’s national weather service, said in a news release on Tuesday.

Paris CNN —The rain that drenched Friday’s opening ceremony may have moved out of Paris, but its effects are still being felt in the River Seine, with water quality concerns throwing the triathlon competition into uncertainty. Training was canceled for a second straight day on Monday after water quality testing deemed the water unsafe for athletes. “Given the weather forecast for the next 36 hours, Paris 2024 and World Triathlon are confident that water quality will return to below limits before the start of the triathlon competitions on July 30,” a joint statement from Paris 2024 and World Triathlon said. But the water quality can change fast. That’s double the level needed for “good” water quality, as per World Triathlon standards.

For nearly two decades, Hollywood has seemingly missed no opportunity to sound the alarm about climate change. So it was startling when the weather-focused “Twisters” arrived from Universal Pictures this month with no mention of climate change at all. If ever there was a perfect vehicle to carry Hollywood’s progressive climate change messaging — a big-budget movie about people caught in worsening storm patterns — wasn’t this it? Apparently not. Movies should not be about “preaching a message,” Lee Isaac Chung, who directed “Twisters,” said in a prerelease interview that served as a dog whistle to conservative ticket buyers.
