NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. labor unions are once again flexing the muscles in the national spotlight. UNION RATES HAVE BEEN FALLING FOR DECADES. Only 6% of U.S. private-sector workers belong to unions today, a sliver of the 35% that were union members in 1953. The National Labor Relations Act of 1935 granted private-sector employees the right to unionize. That means that what worked in auto workers' labor campaign, for example, may not be possible for other industries.

“We won things no one thought possible," UAW President Shawn Fain said when he announced the tentative agreement last week. More recently, Ford, GM and Stellantis were all offering 23% total pay increases. For historical comparison, the union said its workers saw pay increases of 23% for all the years from 2001 through 2022. SHORTER WORK WEEKThe UAW asked for a shorter work week — 40 hours of pay for 32 hours of work. RIGHT TO STRIKEThe union said it won the right to strike against any of the three companies over plant closures.

The GM logo is seen on the facade of the General Motors headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, U.S., March 16, 2021. The GM workers will return to work after an official announcement of the deal, two sources said. Ford shares fell 2% while Stellantis shares were down 1.5% in Milan. Excluding Monday's share moves, GM and Ford shares have lost roughly a fifth of their value since the strike began while Stellantis shares have fallen 1%. "The Street is glad to have this UAW nightmare in the rear view mirror with a less onerous deal than originally feared for the Detroit Big 3," Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said.

Neither the union nor GM would confirm the tentative deal. Most recently that happened at Mack Trucks, where nearly 4,000 UAW members went on strike on October 8 after voting no on their own tentative agreement. There are a total of more than 18,000 UAW members at GM now on strike, though they could be returning to work within days. The strike had a total of nearly 50,000 UAW members on strike at one point or another, although not all at the same time. During the UAW strike, a coalition of unions at Kaiser Permanente had 75,000 workers walk out in the largest US health care strike in history.

DETROIT (AP) — Pressure in rising on General Motors as the lone holdout in a strike targeting all three big Detroit automakers after a tentative contract agreement with Jeep maker Stellantis was reached with the United Auto Workers union over the weekend. The Ford agreement revives cost-of-living adjustments that the UAW agreed to suspend in 2009 during the Great Recession. At Stellantis, workers get cost-of-living pay that would bring raises to a compounded 33%, with top assembly plant workers making more than $42 per hour. Overnight, 8,200 Stellantis workers in Canada represented by a different union, Unifor, walked off the job. At the peak, about 46,000 UAW workers were on strike — about one-third of the union’s 146,000 members at all three companies.

Members of the United Auto Workers union picket outside the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, on Sept. 26, 2023. DETROIT – Local United Auto Workers union leaders approved a tentative agreement Sunday with Ford Motor that includes $8.1 billion in new plant investments by the company, $5,000 ratification bonuses and other economic gains such as 25% compounded wage increases and improved profit-sharing payments. The 4 ½-year tentative agreement, which was announced Wednesday, will now be rolled out to 57,000 UAW-Ford members for regional informational meetings and then voting, the union said Sunday. UAW leaders outlined some details of the tentative agreement last week but released the summary and more than 800-page contract Sunday after local union leaders approved it for member voting. The UAW announced a tentative deal Saturday with Stellantis, however, it has yet to reach a new agreement with GM, despite the sides being close to a deal last week.

The UAW on Sunday released parts of its tentative agreement with Ford, which was first announced last Wednesday. Modeled after the Ford agreement, the UAW reached a tentative labor deal with General Motors (GM) early Monday and one with Chrysler-parent Stellantis (STLA) on Saturday. The only third-quarter sales beat was in Ford Blue, its legacy internal combustion engine unit, which also includes hybrids. However, Ford Blue missed on EBIT (earnings before taxes and interest). We think the automaker can achieve these goals since it has support from its resilient Ford Blue segment, which continues to be profitable in all regions.

Ford was the first to announce it reached a tentative agreement with the UAW on Wednesday. A brief refresherThe strike, which began nearly seven weeks ago, has been the longest US auto strike in 25 years. What will this mean for car prices? Now you’d think people in the market for a new car would pay the price, by way of higher car prices, given all the added costs the Big Three will face if the tentative deals go into effect. That’s because the historic strike doesn’t officially end until it is ratified by rank-and-file members.

The United Auto Workers announced Saturday it reached a tentative agreement with Stellantis. Stellantis would add 5,000 jobs after previously wanting to cut 5,000, including rehiring 1,200 workers. AdvertisementAdvertisementThree days after reaching a tentative agreement with Ford, the United Auto Workers announced Saturday it had also agreed a deal with Stellantis. Like the Ford deal, temporary workers are set to get the biggest wage increase, of more than two-and-a-half times. The tentative agreement means that General Motors is the last of the Big Three automakers to reach a deal with the union.

Detroit's hourly labor costs could soar to $90 an hour, according to one estimate. At Tesla and foreign car companies, that same hourly labor cost sits between $45 and $55 per hour, industry experts estimate. AdvertisementAdvertisementHeading into contract talks this summer, the labor cost gap between the Detroit Three and Tesla was already sizable. While Ford, GM, and Stellantis were spending about $66 an hour on their factory workers, Tesla was spending just $45 an hour. Throughout the strike, Detroit executives warned of the advantage higher labor costs would hand to their competitors.

Tesla investor Gary Black attributed the weakness in Tesla shares to chipmaker Onsemi's (ON.O) bleak forecast. "ON sells to automotive players with over 50% share of global EV sales, including 4 of the top 5 China EV makers," he said in a post on social media platform X on Monday. loadingOnsemi CEO Hassane El-Khoury said the company's top European clients were working to clear their inventory and noted that the company sees "increasing risk to automotive demand due to high interest rates." It contracted to 17.9% between July and September from 25.1% a year earlier due the EV maker's rampant price cuts, which also triggered a price war in key markets such as China. Tesla was trading at about 56 times its 12-month forward earnings estimates, compared with 5.6 times for Ford and General Motors' 4.1, according to LSEG data.

DETROIT — Canadian union Unifor and Stellantis have reached a tentative agreement early Monday morning, ending a brief strike that began after a deal wasn't reached by 11:59 p.m. Sunday. Details of the tentative agreement with Stellantis were not immediately available. The Canadian work stoppage comes nearly three weeks after Unifor launched a roughly 12-hour national strike against General Motors after the sides failed to reach a tentative agreement by a union-set deadline. The Canadian union is negotiating with each automaker separately and using a deal first reached last month with Ford as a pattern for GM and Stellantis. However, once the UAW reached a tentative agreement, which must still be ratified by members, Wednesday with Ford Motor , it has used that deal as a template for proposals with Stellantis and GM.

DETROIT — The United Auto Workers and General Motors have agreed to a deal that will put an end to collective bargaining talks between the union and Detroit automakers following more than six weeks of targeted U.S. labor strikes, sources told CNBC. GM is the final Detroit automaker to reach a deal with the union following historically contentious talks. Tens of thousands of workers across the country went on strikes after the sides failed to reach agreements by a Sept. 14 deadline. Ford Motor was the first to reach a tentative agreement with the union, on Wednesday, followed by a deal with Chrysler-parent Stellantis on Saturday. The headline economics of the deals, such as 25% wage increases, were patterned off of Ford's initial deal.

Photos: Emily Elconin/Bloomberg NewsThe decision by the United Auto Workers on Saturday to call a fresh strike at General Motors as talks appeared to be nearing a conclusion was the latest in a set of unexpected moves by the union, which has used misdirection and maximized publicity to keep companies off balance. The surprise walkout at a factory in Tennessee followed several days of intensifying contract negotiations between GM and union leaders, including meetings involving GM Chief Executive Mary Barra and UAW President Shawn Fain. The escalation of the strike came as the UAW confirmed that it reached a tentative agreement with Chrysler-parent Stellantis on a new labor contract.

GM said it was disappointed by the UAW strike at Spring Hill and that it still seeks "to reach an agreement as quickly as possible." Spring Hill Manufacturing, an assembly and propulsion plant, is the largest GM facility in North America with nearly 4,000 total employees. A lengthy Spring Hill strike could greatly increase the financial pain for GM, which said in a filing earlier this week that strike costs had risen to $400 million a week. Moments before employees walked out in Tennessee, the UAW said it reached a tentative labor agreement with Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). The UAW previously struck GM assembly plants in Missouri and Michigan as well as 18 parts distribution warehouses.

It is not clear what derailed GM and the UAW's progress toward an agreement patterned after earlier deals at Ford and Chrysler-owner Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Pension costs and issues involving the use of temporary workers were among the points of contention at GM, sources said. GM said it was disappointed by the UAW decision to strike Spring Hill. Last month, UAW workers at Mack Truck's U.S. operations overwhelmingly rejected a deal recommended by Fain. In 2015, UAW members at what is now Stellantis voted down a contract endorsed by union leadership.

Amazon.com Inc | ReutersThe initial third-quarter report on gross domestic product showed consumer spending zooming higher by 4% percent a year, after inflation, the best in almost two years. How is this possible with interest rates on everything from credit cards to cars and homes soaring? But they were below expectations at electric-vehicle leader Tesla , which blamed high interest rates, and at Ford . At American Express , which saw U.S. consumer spending rise 9%, the mild surprise was the company's disclosure that young consumers are adding Amex cards faster than any other group.

DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union has widened its strike against General Motors, the lone holdout among the three Detroit automakers, after reaching a tentative contract agreement with Jeep maker Stellantis. About 14,000 UAW workers had been on strike at two Stellantis assembly plants in Michigan and Ohio, and several parts distribution centers across the country. Workers also will get cost-of-living pay that would bring the raises to a compounded 33%, with top assembly plant workers making more than $42 per hour. Like the Ford contract, the Stellantis deal would run through April 30, 2028. Negotiations between the UAW and Stellantis had intensified Thursday, the day after the Ford deal was announced.
